Anyone got a sensible suggestion for a GOOD and reliable battery charger for a bike, I have an Oxford Opimate that kills battery's if left on for more than a day or two, so would like something that I can leave on long term, thanks in advance!!

I use a Tech7 which I think is M&P own brand charger & as much as I dislike M&P I cant fault it at all, I have had batteries on it for months when I forgot it was on & its not damaged one yet

Yuasa SmartShot.

In fact, I'm still using Yuasa SmartShot 900s (Model 12V900), the oldest of which I bought back in 2002. Got them on my toys any time they're unused for more than a couple of weeks. Out here, desert life is hard on batteries (I'm in Las Vegas), with temps that dwell well below 32F (0C) and then, a few months later, over 110F (43C). Kills batteries if you leave them to their own devices.

As a retired electrician, I can tell you that I'm picky about my stuff, and these things are tops. Research them. Well worth your time.

Best to ya!

No such animal, Ian.

Any form of trickle charger will inevitably fuck your battery. Lead acid batteries do not take kindly to trickle charging. Ride the bike regularly and get rid of any alarms. Remove the battery and give it a normal charge every couple of months if the bike is stored over winter. :-0)

Optimate is excellent if you simply use it to charge up the battery to full and then disconnect it. Its leaving it on trickle charge longterm that upsets batteries. The initial testing phase checks for sulphated plates and helps reverse it

Bollocks to the 'remove alarms' advice. Never had any problems with them over 6 bikes. The trick is not to leave the bike Unridden for months on end.

Not again, Andy.

You are getting worse than Derek! AND never stop near a telephone/microwave tower! Alarms do not stop your bike being nicked. They just lift it into the back of a van and drive off. :-0)

An update on the Ctek Charger I bought, FANTASTIC!!!! I kid you not!! as one or two of you know I've had a few electrical problems in the past,:bang: which resulted in me having 4 batteries sat in various states of discharge, the ctek has been on all of them and charged all 4, 2 however have failed to retain a charge and are toast, the good news is the other 2 seem to be okay, whether they will ever turn an engine again I don't know, but one of them is looking good as it hadn't been used much before or after the problem and had a good amount of charge in it!! :dunno: I may even try it on Eddies Pan that's been sat in my garage for the last two years and is for sale if anyone is interested??:dunno:
