They came in at £475, £25 cheaper than LV’s revised quote of £500 after I gave them a rocket for my auto-renew quote of £550. As much as I thought I couldn’t be arsed with the hassle to save £25, I decided to in the futile hope that LV might think twice before mugging off loyal customers in future. So, on the phone to take out the policy and Admiral asked if there was another car in the household as we could save money with a multi-car policy. I said I’d rather not waste time as I’d just tried with LV and it saved me less than £2. She twisted my arm and then dropped my car renewal down even further to £360. She then took Mrs P’s details and hers came in at £409; however, she auto-renewed in April with LV and they charged her £720. Even with a £40 cancellation fee and £120 for two months, she’s still £150 better off.

Equivalent cover, £50 less excess for my excess (my voluntary is £200 instead of £250) and £340 saved. Job done (y)

I have multi car with Admiral and just recently also put my building and contents insurance with them as well.

The saving for all policies is around £400 per year and in respect of the buildings and content cover, far superior to what I had before.

Make sure you don’t get caught speeding & opt for the speed awareness course, Admiral treat it like three points when it comes to renewal.

I'd heard that there was a company who did this but didn't know which one.

They asked me about home insurance but we have a specialist policy with a number of conditions, so from experience, I'm pretty sure Admiral wouldn't be able to offer cover.

I was asked about that when I took my last policy out with them in 2018 when I added Mrs P as a named driver. Mrs P went bonkers and said they have no right to ask (according to what she was taught on her speed awareness course)* and the call handler said it didn't make a difference to the policy price. They were miles cheaper than everyone else, so it didn't matter either way.

*Either they're not allowed to ask the specific question or you're not obliged to advise them, I forget which.

I believe if the signage is not clear or obscured you could have a case (well it worked for me :D) they argued that the signage was fine despite one being completely missing & the other buried in an overgrown bush, pics proved them wrong, then they said I should have known as I was entering a built up area & it was obvious the limit would be 30mph, it wasn't obvious & the nearest house was 300yds away around a bend & completely invisible from the road, it wasn't even anywhere I had been before so I had little chance of knowing what was what, I said see you in court & am still waiting for a date 7 years on :D

The rules regarding signage changed about 10 years or so ago.

For a 30m & 40 limits the repeater signs had to be a set distance apart (it was every 120 yards if memory serves) and if a repeater was missing or was not clearly visible then no offence other than careless or dangerous driving would be committed. But it is very rare for a driver to be reported for a section 2 or 3 offence just for a simple speed offence.

When the rules were changed, it simply stated that the entrance to a speed limit must be clearly signed and then repeaters were only required to be placed at reasonable intervals and if a sign was missing or not visible, then this would be insufficient to counter any offences reported and therefore the statutory defence went out of the window,

The question was raised through the courts of appeal that a driver did not know what the speed limit was because of the lack of repeaters.

He admitted that there was street lighting and so the conviction stood on the basis that the old adage applied, is there is street lighting, then assume it is a 30 limit until confirmation signs tell you differently.

There is more detail and depth to the change in the regs, but that is it in simple terms.

I don't doubt you in the slightest & it does make perfect sense (y)

In my case not knowing any better I argued the toss it & it appears to have worked, the nip came for 35 in a 30 I never saw a copper or a flash from a speed camera, it was pitch black & peeing it down, there were no street lights until well around the bend & into the village at least 3 to 400 yards further on by which time I cant imagine me being over the limit anyway (because of the bend)

I actually went back the day after I got the notice as I couldn't believe what I was reading, no camera in sight & even in broad daylight it was hard to find the 30 sign, no repeaters or road markings anywhere in evidence, definitely no camera van on the night of the alledged offence & out of 4 of us only I got a notice

I even checked the road signs & various maps, before the bend is one road where I was supposed to be speeding after the bend its another road, conclusion someone was trying it on so I didn't sign the notice & sent it back with a letter 4 times it was returned to me with a covering note (unsigned) giving different excuses until I sent it back with take me to court in big red letters scrawled across it …………. still waiting as I would love to go to court with all the pictures letters etc & make them look the complete idiots they are

Ps if it had been right I wouldn't have complained just paid up but it plainly wasn't

I always do the go compare type websites for insurance, there are so many variables that you need to play with them for some time to keep tweaking for the right price. For example -

Where is the vehicle parked overnight - 9 options and the definition for a lot of them can apply
Job title - Loads and when is this ever checked and multiple could be applicable
Job Sector - Loads and I have to select the nearest option as mine doesn't exist in the first place, but makes a difference
Additional Drivers - Stick anyone on older than you and the quote comes down, they don't have to live at your address, my mum and or dad (over 70 and retired always bring my quotes down)
When do you want the cover to start - Again varies the price, sometimes buying ahead pays here

Just the easy 5 above.

If you have kids and they struggle with insurance the best way is for you to "legally" own the vehicle (V5C in your name) and they insure as the main driver but not the owner. This way they build no claims and it's not fronting. I always spend time to find the cheapest and this is never by renewing as they just stick the price up every year.

And vehicle value is a big one as well, going cheap on value does not always equal cheap insurance, you literally have to keep playing with the system and keep typing the different variables in until it gives the magic number
