A Word of Warning.

Some of you may have noticed a few days back that I had got trouble with my fan not cutting in. I consulted Haynes which said if the fan itself was OK, then it would be either the relay or the coolant temperature sensor, so I went for the cheaper option and ordered a relay from DSS. Whilst waiting for it to arrive I found that the 4 relays in a line are the same, so I swapped them round to no avail. So I then ordered a temp sensor. This arrived today ,so I fitted it. Zilch ! Problem persists. Consults Haynes again which says it is then either wiring issue or ECM ! Gulp ! I then studied the wiring diagram to see how the fan circuit works. Starting with the fan itself , I see that one wire goes to the relay and the other goes via the fuse box to the ignition switch ( which I wasn't expecting) This suddenly reminded me that 2 or 3 months back I decided to fit a new ignition switch because mine had been repaired by soldering when a wire snapped off underneath. Having seen the price being asked by DSS for oem, I went for an oriental version from Ebay for a fraction of the price, thinking that if it didn't work I had only wasted a couple of quid. Fitted it and everything seemed OK, until now ! Anyway, today,I dug out the old switch , refitted it, and lo and behold , my fan is alive and kicking once more. SO, the moral of my story is, whatever you do Don't Buy One Of The Cheap Chinese Ignition Switches. Here Endeth The Lesson! :yo:

Coincidentally The Duck over at CBRXX has recently had intermittent issues with his cooling fan which he tracked down to a faulty OEM ignition switch.

Whilst waiting for a replacement from the states he has reqired it as follows

In order to keep Daily Bird on the road while a new contact set arrives from the States I've carried out a temporary 'fix'.

The fan is run off fuse 2 so I pulled that fuse. The switched live from the ignition goes to one side of the fuse and naturally the other side goes to the fan. I've unclipped the outlet fuse cable from the fuse box (just needs a small screwdriver) and connected it to a new switched and fused cable that I added to my auxiliary fuse box..... new 12v supply to the fan sorted. By doing it this way I will just have to disconnect the new cable and push the old one back into the fuse box when I install the contact set.

On testing what did surprise me is that the fan now turns on earlier (not exactly precise measurement) .... or at least the temp needle hasn't risen so high on the gauge. It will be interesting to see the condition of the old contact set when I remove it.

At one point I thought I was going to have to go down that route, but thankfully I found the culprit , albeit a self inflicted one ! Anyway thanks for your previous helpful input,Mikey , much appreciated. :yo:
