I was merely remembering the winter of discontent as an example of the unions ruling the roost. This was still the case when she took over and she sorted the wankers out!:bow:

There is some bollocks being talked about on here.

Firstly the Belgrano, ( at the time an enemy warship, by the way), at sea fully armed, carrying large naval guns, I didn't give a toss which way it was headed, they can turn round you know, if we had lost her and she had got amongst the convoys, many of which were merchant ships taken up from trade, ( STUFT), then she could have wrought havoc. A decision was taken to sink her while we still could, made by Thatchers military advisors, for sound military reasons, although yes she did give the final sanction. Thank god.
Don't forget, HMS Sheffield, Ardent,Antelope, Coventry, Glamorgan to name a few.
Also the indiscriminate mining of the Islands, and the Napalm canister bombs, thankfully captured before they could be deployed. I could go on, not everything that went on down there was broadcast by the press, although god knows they did they're best to assist the enemy.
It was a dirty war, they all are.

The unions were bringing this country to its knees, the self destruct button had been pressed, and the union leaders couldn't see it, you cannot have people holding the country to ransom, which is what they tried to do. No government would stand for that....well maybe Labour would have?

As for Labour, well, they have served us well in their last term of power haven't they :wank: Iraq...Afghanistan....the national debt, wasn't it Lyam Burne who left a note at the treasury when they left saying there's no money left, then described it as a joke! I won't even discuss Brown.
And yet when the next elections come around the same old people will vote for them,"cause we always have", Christ I swear if a bloody goat was put forward to represent Labour, some would vote for it. And it would do better than the shower at the moment, Ed Balls and his wife could almost be the Kinnocks all over again.
The only seemingly decent guy on that side has seen the light and gone to work in America. Every time I see Ed Miliband I can't get Beaker out of my mind. 8rfl@

national debt if you look at other countries who suffered the same world recession the same as us some are in deeper shit than us some are growing and doing good, as i said then and say again now we should take a leaf out of the yanks book and tax all imports. buy British create Britishs jobs and safeguard the jobs we have now. but our industries were sold off the massive manufacturing base we had was closed, by thatcher and major.

Labour got many thing wrong i have never said they didnt, but the rot started with thatcher.

UK Manufacturing was fcuk'd way before Maggie came in - it goes back to Duncan Sandys and Dennis Healy in the 50's and 60's shafting our aviation industry (acknowledged as one of the best in the world) and unions making our car and bike industries uncompetitive [1] due to restrictive working practices and unrealistic wage demands making our products expensive to export and buy. State involvement in industry was an abject failure because anything run by commitee will not react in a nimble way and remain competitive.

Thatcher refused to continue throwing taxpayer's money away just to keep lossmaking industries afloat and part of this was bringing the Unions to heel to allow businesses the freedom to work as businesses not as moneypits. Our national problems came to a head in the late 70's with Mrs T but had their roots in the post war era onwards.

[1] Companies like Toyota were able to develop new, flexible approaches to manufacturing, reducing costs and improving quality. The UK Unions saw any such action as a direct threat to the jobs of their members and balked any idea of improvement. The net result was that everyone lost out eventually and we have NO UK car companies of any size anymore. Now Toyota is one of the top car manufacturer's in the world and employ thousands of manufacturing staff here in the UK alone.
