I have just succombed to buying a sat nav yeh I know there will be loads of you who think maps are better.I have had one to many episodes of riding around on petrol vapour and getting lost once to often, when touring in europe.
So my question is has any on fitted one by the clutch resevoir and does it get in the way of the screen.
Do you leave the mounting bracket on all the time or just put it on when needed, and disconnect from the battery each time.
Is there any better mounting bracket available.
Any advice (apart from stick to maps) would be a help
Cheers

I've done a temporary job on the bottom bolt of the brake res bolt (top one holds the heated grip controller), but intend to mount it as per Mtk above... This method seems the prefered on a birdie.

My Zumo mounts stay permenantly wired to the bikes.. Why would you want to go through all the grief of unwiring ?

I Cut

the power lead and fitted a socket onto the Right Hand bar
then made up a bracket to fit a coupler for the audio leads and fitted it to the left hand bar so now the cradle can be removed easly from the bike.

A bit long winded Sorry

Sorry about the photo quality it maybe a bit dark in the Garage for photos

I use a ram mount fitted to the steering stem nut(do a Search for ram mount on BIRD) but I don?t always take the Zumo with me so rather than leave the cradle fitted I knocked up this.

Cut off the Garmin plug but leave enough of a tail to go from the cradle to the socket
Then fit a 2.1mm DC power socket(Maplins I find them very helpful) to one end of a suitable sized cable ( I used the actual Garmin lead). Make a short bracket to hold the socket (I used a bit of meccano) drilled with a 9mm hole at each end and used the right hand side handle bar bolt for a fixing point. Run the lead to the battery I took mine under the panels( you may have to remove the inline fuse and re-fit it later) now fit a matching plug to the end of the Garmin plug. That?s all there is to the power supply all you have to do to remove your Zumo & cradle is pull the plug out.

As for the audio side is run the audio lead and the phone lead (If you plan on using it)
Down the left hand side of the bike (again I went under the panels) from you intercom system to the Left hand handle bar , I made another bracket again I used the handle bar bolt for a fixing point I then fitted a 3.5mm Audio coupler to the bracket. The best way I found to do this was to super glue it/them if your using the phone lead to
The bracket then wrap some plastic padding or simlar (Self amalgamating tape will also suffice) around the bracket and coupler/s (Cover the holes with masking tape to ensure you don?t get any filler in them). Make a short audio lead to go from the coupler to your Zumo and another for the phone if your using it and Richards your dads brother.
This all seem a bit long winded but it actually took me about 2 hours to do excluding drying time for the plastic padding.
