I've got a '97 'bird, which I've had from new.
The original battery is still going strong after 11 years.
It does get connected to an optimate during the winter.

Question is, how long are these things meant to last?

three to five years !
Be VERY careful.. If that battery is not in good nick and you still have the OEM reg rec fitted you could be looking at probs !

Thanks for the advice.
I did buy a Varta replacement a few months ago as I thought I was living on borrowed time.
The original battery seems to hold its charge well, but it may be worth changing it to prevent any potential rectifier problems in the future. This is also the original OEM unit.

I concur .......a new one of each after 12 years for me was a sound investment methinks ........
