If it's an injection it will have 'injection' decals on the pig ugly tailpiece and/or the pig ugly front mudguard.

Assuming it's original paint.

The Bird is best serviced at home.. too many dealers think they know it all and very often put fully synth oil ( a massive no no ) in and use odd filters

4ltrs semi synth oil, oil filter, air filter and a set of plugs.. If you are a complete spanner numpty about 4 hours.. Average spanner skills 1.5 to 2 hours
The bird is VERY low tech and really easy to work on.. And contrary to what a dealer will tell you the valves need checking at about 100,000 miles !!!
I spent from 1999 to 2017 working exclusively on Birds so these is not the words of someone who has just worked on one or two but someone who did it for a living :)
I would bid him £2 as it has got the luggage etc
You WILL need a battery and in all honesty you should replace the tyres straight away... 10 year old rubber is NOT good on a 235 kilo bike capable of 184mph !

Was only thinking of keeping the tyres on until after an mot, but I-am budgeting for new ones. Do you think that ( if it’s a carb model), standing petrol would be an issue. I know that it can cause ’gumming‘ of the jets which can be virtualy impossible to shift without replacing ?

As above, chuck a bottle of injection or carb cleaner (the difference is likely to be the label on the bottle only) in the tank. Won't do any harm.

Ignore the instructions on about how much to use.

Without seeing pics its a little guess work but its a 1500 quid bike absolute max as is & 2 grand or a little over done if its really immaculate

Condition is everything forget the miles they mean nothing I would be bidding 1200 take it or leave it, not a penny more !

50 50 chance.. I would drain the tank ( obviously :) ) and also look at the bottom of the carbs, find the drain screws and drain them too
If you get anything coming out chances are very high all will be well
Even if it has become gummed up its not the end of the world.. Never yet had to replace jets because of gumming
If ( and it is only an if ) she does not fire up. whip the carbs off and strip them.. If you have not got access to an ultra sonic cleaner dump all the bits in a big bowl of carb cleaner ..
The trick is to agitate it with something that vibrates... Strap one of those orbital sanders to it for about 30 to 40 minutes .. never had a fail yet even on a 40 year old carb that the fuel had completely dried up in

Thnx, that’s reassuring. On first fire up with a clean tank of fuel, would an additive like Redex be of any benefit?

I always find it so hard to believe that a bike of that age can have such low miles!
I can only wonder if the owner has at some point put himself into a position were they have sh!t themself, parked it up and not gone back to it!

There's a guy at work, who I know is scared of the power of his bike, (sorry that should probably read 'lack of control') He's the sort of guy that goes to a bike meet/event by car then puts on a onepiece while he mingles with the true bikers and tells them he 'rides' a Busa!

No.def not
What you are actually doing is very slightly weakening the fuel/air mix and not a lot else.. perhaps 40 or 50 years ago there was a place for upper cylinder lubricants but modern fuels are full of additives now which basically made such things obsolete .. If you were talking about a bike made in the 50's where tolerances were bloody massive ok.. But on a Bird ? Simply a waste of time money and effort :)

When I sold back my 2000 Bird last year it was on about 15k miles, and immaculate. I achieved £3850 in total, I am confident it was then sold for at least £4500.

Thanks for all your advice...it’s paid off and the seller has agreed £2k and I’m happy cos I know the bike. It’s only a project as my main bike is a top spec.auto FJR. However, there’s much work now to do, so you’ve not heard the last of me. I’ll publish a pic. of the Bird when I’ve managed to push it around to mine. In the meantime....where’s the best on line place for spares, plugs, filters etc.
