Your next of kin??

Do you specifiy anywhere who your next of kin is?

Do you automatically assume that your partner/spouse will be next of kin?

If you are single - is your next of kin your parents? or your kids if you have ones that are old enough?



I'm concerned at the mo as I my guess is that my next of kin would be assumed to be my mother. As she and I don't agree on much to do with my life or lifestyle, including medical life support and stuff, I am not convinced that she is the person I should rely on if a situation came about where a next of kin was needed.


So, what to do?

I've found this online - its written for co-habitating partners I think, but covers the topic fairly well it seems.

Do you think a card in a pocket/wallet would be enough for a hospital/police/ambulance?







I know - more morbidity (it was funerals last time) but having had some family 'situations' happen recently, I am more and more aware that the last person I want to have any say over me and what happens to me if I can't communicate a decision, is my mother!!! :bang:

I never know exactly who I should put as my next of kin either. My daughter who lives with me and is now 13 or my sister. They are my only direct living relatives. My daughter is too young to really be contacted in any emergency and my sister and I have very little contact. We agree to disagree on most things. I should look into it really but there is always something else needs my attention

I usually just put my girlfriend down on most forms that request it.

As I'm married I do put Andy down as my next of kin, and I assume that they would contact him first as a matter of course. I think you have nothing to loose by carrying the card, but you could also make sure that the person you really want contacted in an emergency is listed under ICE in your mobile as that is generally one of the first places they will look when trying to contact someone if you are in an accident or something. Not sure if you can contact the local hospital admin people and ask to have a note put on your file that you do not wish your mother to be contacted, and give them the details of the person you do want contacted?

Over here you can have you next of kin be your common law spouse (living together for 6months qualifies) and if you have a legal paper with your wishes if you should be unable to voice them yourself you are covered and they cannot go to your mother or sister or whomever would be the next "blood" relative.

I would suggest getting a legal paper written up and having your "emergency contact" and your family doctor both have copies of this document so that you can have them accessed easier and without having to "croak" first and have your will read.

If you are taken into hospital in an emergency, they wont have access to your full medical record immediately so that would be difficult to achieve.

Obviously if you are on a normal admission to hospital that would be one of the first questions they ask on clerking in.
