My bike has always started immediately on the first touch of the button.
Just recently though it sometimes hesitates when I press the starter button. When I press the button it is silent for up to a second, then the starter spins and the bike starts as per normal, has anyone else experienced this "hesitation"?
I'm wondering if it an early warning of a failing solenoid or relay perhaps. I would assume that dirty contacts would cause the same fault but with more consistency ( it only happens occassionaly and with no discernable pattern).
Any (helpful) suggestions would be appreciated.

sounds more like a HISS problem to me!

if hiss dont recognise your key = no spinny starter!

have you got a spare key you can use ?

Hmm, good point! I do have a spare key, I'll keep it in my pocket... just in case.

Had the same probs with mine, turned out to be the kill switch, wet and rusty, must have been arcing. ?15 from fleebay and sorted

Thanks guys

I hope you are right and it is only a grubby contact in the switchgear. Only to be expected really as it is a yr2000 bike and it is regularly used in all weathers.
I'll dismantle the switchgear and clean it up, is there anything to be wary of... miniscule springs that fire across the garage for example?

I had this exactly on my carb Bird - never let me down though and seemed to sort itself out. I reckoned it was probably a dirty sidestand or neutral switch. Never did find out and has been as right as rain for the last 50000 miles or so.

Are you carb or :puke:FI?

Mine is an FI, it's always been so reliable that it takes me by surprise if something out-of-the-ordinary happens.

I was on it yesterday and it hesitated again so I flicked the kill switch off/on and it sorted it....

I'll put a bit of effort into cleaning the switch gear and hope that sorts it.

I never use the kill switch in normal day to day use so this is probably the source of the problem, 4 years of not being used has probably allowed the contacts to deteriorate.
