Jaws post got me thinking back...I was 10 or 11 years old..and announced to parents that I was riding to Jodrell Bank ...to see the radio telescope and have a sit in the planetarium....my bike was a Raleigh Europa 10 speed...upgraded with long mud guards, front and rear lights, saddle bag and drinks bottle attached to handlebars. Jodrell bank was 20 odd miles away I think...I didn't even know where it was..had a quick study of an atlas if I remember..
Anyway,I digress..did my parents try to stop me,confiscate my bike or lock me indoors????
No...all that I remember is my dad saying get a postcard to prove that you have been!!!!
Fast forward 30 odd years and I wouldn't even let my daughter out of the grove where we live let alone on the public highway on a push bike...

All our kids and THEIR kids go out on their own camping.. in the forest of which we live on the edge
Usually go on friday night and come home Sunday..
Darrell started going about 11 years old... his kids the same.. Kids raised in the middle of a suburban setting have NO idea how much they miss out on

My daughter has a pennine pathfinder folding camper, she sometimes sets it up in her front garden & her & kids camp out, she usually gets a disposable barbecue & gets the kids to find twigs so they can roast marshmallows, building happy memories.
