Just had first decent run since putting the fjr back together fromit winter overhaul.
Did 80ish miles with no problems.

Stopped off to see a mate & when I got on to go home kept my flip front helmet up whilet heading up to the top if the cul-de-sac and turning round. I did a bout 25-30 in 2nd & let the engine do the braking. On the overrun it sounded like the camchain was lashing about. the sound appeared to be on the left hand side but it would seem the cam chain is on the right.

I tried a couple of times in gear and under load (overrun) and it keeps doing it. Sounds normal on centrestand as well as doing the same with the clutch pulled in.

I might just be paranoid having heared this with my lid up

Went onto many FJR forums and they all talk of impending doom of cam chain tensioner failure with exploding engines. Their symptoms always show the expected ticking at tickover, which mine doesnt have.

Anyone have any clue?

BTW. Over winter I did remove the generator cover to have it powder coated. Other than that new oil & filter, removed swing arm to grease pivots & replaced shaft drive oil.......

Wouldve suggested checking the front sprocket but then i recalled your bike being a shaft driven...as far as I am aware a cam chain doesnt get affected by load and if it is failing it will show up on centrestand, but again I am not 100 on that either...so in short buy a bird :)

when I removed the stator cover to replace the coils ,when I put the cover back on there was a ticking sound turned out that the cable clamp was just catching as the crank end spun had to file a tiny bit off the camp whitch stopped the ticking sound , might be somthing similar .

+1 I had this on my old Carb when I changed the generator, when I whipped the cover off you could see where there was something rubbing. Soon sorted.

I have also heard of thios happening when liquid gasket has been used in place of a proper one - the missing 'thickness' has caused some rubbing around the generator.

Cheers guys.
Pretty sure its not from the stator & wiring. The wires are held in place inside by a matel plate & a couple of screws. I putsome threadlock on these to stop them working loose. If it was this rubbing Id expect it to doit all the time:dunno:
I hope not as I dont fancy dropping the oil again & having to seal the wiring with sealant again so soon.

The UJ looked in good nick when I had the shaft drive out andthe swing arm offfor its winter overhaul. Very slight surface rust/discolouring. I gave it a good spray with ACF, but didnt check for play in the joint. Its only got 19000 miles up so would hope this isnt worn yet.

Cant hear it with earplugs in ( perhaps thats the answer:-0))
Had another listen tonight and I can just hear a rattle just as i let off the revs when in neutral.
Thinking it might be from inside the exhaust. Loose baffle or cat possibly?

Ill have a closer look when its a bit warmer8ree!
