Home Race For Sykes And A Favourite For Baz At Silverstone

Tom Sykes and Loris Baz will compete for the Kawasaki Racing Team at Silverstone circuit in the ninth round of the FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend, with podium finishes in their sights
Home Race For Sykes And A Favourite For Baz At Silverstone
After a sombre end to the recent Moscow Raceway round and the cancellation of the second Russian SBK race as a mark of respect to the late Andrea Antonelli, Silverstone is the venue for the entire SBK paddock to reconvene at between 2 and 4 August. There will be one but two races for each Superstock class at this event, in addition to the usual two SBK races and single WSS event.

Silverstone is the second British round of the year for Yorkshireman Tom Sykes to compete at. His first home round at Donington in late May delivered him a virtually perfect race weekend, which was topped off by a double race win.

For Sykes two more race victories would be the perfect way to finish the first part of the season, before the long summer break which will run almost all the way to the end of August. Tom is currently second in the championship by only four points and with a win total of five races, more than any other rider in 2013.

Loris Baz had his first career SBK race win at Silverstone last year, riding his Kawasaki Racing Team machine to the top spot in a rain-affected first race and then taking second spot in race two to underline his true talent. Loris, now 20, has reached the podium again in 2013, taking third at Assen and aiming to be in a position to fight for another top three by qualifying well at Silverstone.

Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) goes for more points in his rookie SBK season but he will have a new riding partner at Silverstone, as Alex Lundh (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) continues his recuperation from a wrist injury. Mark Aitchison, who used to ride for Team Pedercini in SBK, is scheduled to rejoin the squad for this SBK round.

Leandro Mercado and Lorenzo Savadori will ride as usual for the Kawasaki Pedercini Team in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup class, while Jeremy Guarnoni and Romain Lanusse lead the MRS Kawasaki charge in England.

Tom Sykes: ?At the previous round we had an issue in the race but we had been fastest in most of the practice sessions and had great race pace. So in that respect I am happy. When you are pushing at the front of races sometimes mistakes or issues come along. Last year at Silverstone in normal conditions the Ninja ZX-10R was good but in the wet conditions of raceday we struggled a bit. I think many people understand that we have made a big step with the set-up since then. I am looking forward to racing again in front of my home crowd and hopefully we can have a similar kind of result as we did at Donington, but we will see. I am going to Silverstone relaxed and motivated and we can look to hopefully get ourselves back on track. There is a long summer break afterwards with three weeks off; then in September the calendar gets really busy again. So a good result at Silverstone would be ideal to enjoy the summer break all the more.?

Loris Baz: ?I had a short holiday in Spain after Moscow and now I am ready for the Silverstone weekend. After everything that happened in Moscow it will be good to be back racing. I really like Silverstone and after I won a race there last year I had a really good weekend. We are at a moment in the season when I need a strong weekend. I think we can make a good weekend and we need it again. I am not sure why I like Silverstone but I always enjoyed it when I rode it in Superstock and in BSB. It is a really nice track and to go England is always cool because I know the British spectators and I have some good fans there so I am always happy to go to race in the UK.?

SILVERSTONE IN SIGHT

The next stop for the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team and BMW factory riders Marco Melandri and Chaz Davies is Silverstone, Great Britain. The famous circuit will host the ninth round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend. For Chaz, it is the second home round of the season after the Donington Park round at the end of May.

After riding his BMW S 1000 RR to victory at the last round in Russia, Marco improved to third in the Riders' classification with 207 points, 32 points adrift of the lead. Chaz, who finished second in Russia, is fifth with 174 points. In the Manufacturers' classification, BMW has collected 262 points so far and is currently third, 38 points from the lead. After BMW Motorrad Motorsport announced last week that it will withdraw from the FIM Superbike World Championship at the end of the 2013 season, the squad remains focused on claiming more strong results in the remaining rounds of the year.

At Silverstone, the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup will return to action after a five weeks break. This weekend there will be two races for the BMW Motorrad Goldbet STK Team to tackle, with riders Sylvain Barrier and Greg Gildenhuys. BMW is currently leading in both the rider and manufacturer standings. Sylvain, who has won three of the five races contested this year with the new BMW HP4, tops the Riders' classification with an advantage of twelve points. In the Manufacturers' classification, BMW is in front too, having a gap of five points to its closest rival.

Marco Melandri: "Silverstone is a great and fast track and at the same time it is also very difficult due to its changes of pace and bumpy surface but I still really like it. I hope that the weather - which is always unpredictable in the UK - will be good this time. I'm sorry for the decision BMW has taken but unfortunately I'm used to such situations. I'm not really worried because for us riders it is always possible to find a solution, although, of course, at this important stage of the season it is not good for our mood. I hope that the experience will help me to handle it."

Chaz Davies: "Of course I feel sorry about BMW Motorrad's decision, but this year we still have a long season ahead of us with many rounds in which we want to continue to be successful. So we keep being focused and working hard. The next round is my home race at Silverstone. Even though I would not rank it as one of my most favourite circuits, I quite enjoy riding there. It is different challenges because it is quite fast and open. In addition, you find different corners on this circuit than you find anywhere else. It is completely flat but it is very difficult to set the bike up, especially a Superbike, because it is bumpy. There is a lot of work in setting the suspension up and sometimes you get it right and sometimes you can get it wrong. It is a really demanding circuit for the crews. I am looking forward to racing at home. Superbikes are pretty popular in the UK and I hope that a lot of people will come to watch me."

Serafino Foti (Sport Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "We have noted and accepted the strategic decision that the company has taken and I want to thank BMW Motorrad for the level of competitiveness we have reached and for the great performance in the season so far. Our riders are doing very well and they will go on this way until the end of the season, keeping their focus on the present because the results we are achieving now are the base on which we will now build our future. All the guys from the team are doing the same and will continue to do their best and, for sure, the decision will not have any influence on the rest of the season because they are real professionals. This year in Silverstone, we will race on the same track layout as we did in 2011, which is quite different from the Moscow circuit, but we'll do our best and we'll be competitive."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "After the very emotional race weekend we experienced in Moscow, the team also had to learn and understand the strategic decision taken by BMW for the future of the SBK project. The last few days were not the easiest ones for all of us but I'm sure that all the guys will keep working as usual. They are professional and very much motivated to achieve, race by race, the results that all of us deserve. In Moscow we've seen that both riders were quite fast in both dry and wet conditions. This will be very important for the next race in Silverstone where the weather can change quickly, as we saw last year.

The British track is one of the longest circuits of the calendar with very fast corners where the riders can use a smooth and flowing riding style, it's a technical circuit where the side grip is quite important, especially in the long turns. Both riders will start with basically the same bike we successfully used in Russia, and we'll work mainly on the set up. Both the team and the riders are looking forward to the Silverstone races, with a clear target of consolidating what we have shown in Moscow. Both riders are in good shape and they will have extra motivation with it being Chaz's home race and for Marco his 'second' home race as he used to live in England."

Haslam and Rea back to SBK action at Silverstone

Pata Honda riders Leon Haslam and Jonathan Rea will return to World Superbike action this weekend (2-4 August) for the ninth round event at Silverstone in the UK, just a few days after contesting the prestigious Suzuka 8-hours race in Japan.

The Suzuka race was won by Haslam, who teamed up with Pata Honda World Supersport team-mate, Michael van der Mark, and Japanese rider Takumi Takahashi. Rea had looked to be well-placed to repeat last year?s victory before his own team-mate, Ryuichi Kiyonari, crashed out of contention.

Both riders will arrive at Silverstone following an event with Honda colleagues at the company's European HQ on Wednesday 31 July and both are keen to get back to their regular Honda CBR1000RR machines on the fast and flowing 5.902km circuit in central England, home to the British Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Haslam, 30, has not won at Silverstone but visited the podium in 2010 and was leading last year?s race on slick tyres when rain began to fall, turning the circuit into an ice rink and the race into a lottery.

Rea took two second-place finishes in that 2010 event and the 26-year-old missed the following year?s races through injury. He took fourth place in race one last season but was bizarrely taken out by another rider?s machine immediately after crossing the finishing line.

Leon Haslam
Suzuka was an amazing experience and I struggled a bit during my first stint, probably trying too hard to be precise and have a good pace. Also, the compensating I had to do for my leg ended up giving me some really bad back problems, but it was all worth it in the end. Now it?s all change for Silverstone this weekend, but I?m really looking forward to it. I love the circuit and was on the podium in 2010 and led the race last year when we all got caught out on slicks when the rain came. I missed the races at Donington earlier this year because of my leg injury, so this will be the only chance to ride in front of the British fans this season, so it?s something I?m really looking forward to.

Jonathan Rea

I was devastated to finish the 8-hour race the way we did, but these things happen and I was happy for my Pata Honda team-mates and for Honda. I?m feeling really good though and looking forward to getting back on my bike this weekend. I've had mixed results at Silverstone in the past and I've had some great races there; I particularly remember a couple of second places in 2010, which I really enjoyed. We struggled a bit last year, but it's a nice circuit to ride. The modifications made to the track in recent years have made it better but I'll attack it the same way I attack every other circuit. Of course, being a second British round, it'll be good to see a lot of friendly faces there, even if they can be quite far away in some places.

CAMIER 2ND IN SILVERSTONE WSB QUALIFYING

FIXI Crescent Suzuki's Leon Camier began his birthday celebrations early as he set the second fastest time during first qualifying at today's eni FIM Superbike World Championship event at Silverstone in England.

Camier celebrates his 27th birthday on Sunday and started the weekend off in good style by setting the second-quickest time in this morning's free practice session around the 5,902m English circuit, a feat he followed up this afternoon to give him a provisional front-row start for Sunday's two races. Camier looked impressive all day on his Yoshimura-powered Suzuki GSX-R and believes that with a few small improvements he will be able to push all the way on race-day.

Jules Cluzel made significant steps between today's two sessions that saw him shave almost a-second-and-a-half off his morning practice time during this afternoon's qualifying. The Frenchman is making his first appearance at the fast and complicated Silverstone circuit on a Superbike and used this morning's session to re-assess his braking points and lines before pushing for a faster time later in the day. Cluzel claimed the 10th quickest time in qualifying, but admitted that a mistake on what looked like being his best lap cost him dearly and stopped him from being much higher on the time-sheets.

Today's activities were held in changing conditions with the occasional hint of rain, which fortunately never materialised. Tom Sykes on a Kawasaki led the way by securing the top spot in both the practice and qualifying sessions.

FIXI Crescent Suzuki will have a further 45-minutes of qualifying tomorrow morning to finalise the riders that progress to the afternoon's Superpole. This will see the top-15 battle it out for the best grid positions for Sunday's races.

Leon Camier:

"I'm happy to be up towards the front and it's a good way to start the weekend. I don't think we really improved on anything from the first to the second session, which is probably a good thing because the bike feels quite fast and it's giving me what I want in a few places, but I think if we can make a couple of improvements to the bike we can go a good step quicker. We'll keep working and try to get the best feeling and performance we can from the FIXI Crescent Suzuki. The weather was good today; it did drizzle a bit this morning, but that didn't affect anything. The wind was a bit of a problem and it changed direction this afternoon, it pushed me wide in a few areas and this made the set-up difficult to find, as it was hard to know if it was the wind pushing me wide or the bike's setting. Grip is also pretty bad out there, but it's the same for everyone, so we'll keep working and see what happens."

Jules Cluzel:

"It's been quite a difficult day, because this morning I didn't have quite a good feeling on the bike. We ran the same tyres for the whole session, so I was expecting some improvement this afternoon and with a new set of the same compound tyres I was immediately one-second quicker, which was quite good. On my last run I used a different compound and at the end I improved by another four-tenths-of-a-second, but I made a big mistake in the last split where I lost three or four-tenths and if that hadn't happened I could have been second or third; so I think we are doing quite well and i'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Paul Denning - Team Manager:

"Considering that both riders think there are big steps to take forward with chassis balance and overall performance of the GSX-R1000s from the first day here at Silverstone, the result looks pretty positive and promising for the rest of the weekend, especially if we can find the improvements they are looking for. Silverstone is an incredibly-challenging track, with a mix of high corner speeds and demanding requirements for the bike and rider over the course of a lap. It's tough to find the perfect balance, but the boys will be doing the best they can to do just that.

"It's nice to be at the team's second home race of the year, we've had a busy day and a big involvement from two of our partners, Voltcom and Catch Resource Management. We hope we can build steadily over the weekend and get the results the team and all the partners are looking for."

Silverstone - eni FIM Superbike World Championship - Qualifying 1: 1. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) 2'05.355: 2. Leon Camier (FIXI Crescent Suzuki) +0.881: 3. Davide Giugliano (Aprilia) +0.977: 4. Jonathan Rea (Honda) +0.994: 5. Leon Haslam (Honda) 0.998. 10 Jules Cluzel (FIXI Crescent Suzuki) +1.363.

Rea and Haslam in the hunt at Silverstone

Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam took provisional fourth and fifth places respectively in this afternoon?s opening qualifying session for round nine of the 2013 World Superbike championship at Silverstone in the UK.

The British duo returned from the Suzuka 8-hours race in Japan earlier this week but took no time in adjusting back to their SBK-specification Honda CBR1000RR Fireblades at the 5.902km Silverstone circuit, ending the day separated by just four thousandths of a second.

After grey and overcast conditions this morning, the first 45-minute qualifying session was run in warm, sunny but breezy conditions in which Tom Sykes took provisional pole position.

Jonathan Rea ? P4 2m06.349s

We made some good progress straight away and got up to speed early on this morning, so I was really happy. This afternoon we went backwards with the set-up a little bit and we need to revert back to the ride heights that we had earlier. The bike was a little harder to ride, especially in the twisty sections. Looking at everything though, it?s useful to have Leon up there as well because we can learn some things from his data. We?ll sit down and go through it all tonight and learn what we can. It seems we?re faster than last year but in the second session it was quite difficult to do the lap time. We?ll try to make the bike more easy and try tomorrow with some improvements. Engine braking is still a bit of an issue and I feel like I?m being pushed into the corner a little bit, so we need to look at deceleration and then we should be in the ball park. But it?s not bad for a first day!

Leon Haslam ? P5 2m06.353s

We?re making progress, even though we have a few issues that we need to resolve, but, all in all, it?s good. It?s always nice to be a little bit higher up the time sheets and, although I?m happy enough with the progress we?ve made so far, we?ve still got a bit of a way to go. The leg injury is not holding me back as much here as it has at earlier rounds, and once we?ve solved these issues we can hopefully make some bigger steps tomorrow.

Pieter Breddels ? team-co-ordinator

This morning, Leon was struggling a little and didn?t do a lot of laps so we had to make the bike a little more to his liking. This afternoon he improved a little for a pretty good lap time, so it?s good to see him back near the front and showing his potential. Jonathan started pretty well this morning but we tried some things this afternoon, some of which improved the bike, some of which didn?t. We?ll analyse everything and try to make a better bike for tomorrow.

Sykes And Baz On The Second Row After A Bizarre Superpole
WSBK, Silverstone, Great Britain, 3 August 2013
Tom Sykes and Loris Baz each lost a chance to take pole position after rain appeared in the final Superpole session, cancelling the result and bringing forward a final 20-minute ?Wet? Superpole.
Sykes And Baz On The Second Row After A Bizarre Superpole
In what was the fourth Superpole session on track, but by regulation the third and final one as the results stood, Loris was fourth and Sykes fifth, meaning they will each start Sunday?s races from the second row of the grid.

At his home round Sykes initially set a remarkable 2?03.362 second lap in the eventually cancelled Superpole Three (with Baz right behind him and also under the previous track best) but that time was nullified when the session was red flagged with four minutes to go.

The re-run Superpole Three eventually delivered dry conditions, but in changeable early wet conditions Baz was fastest, before he was finally pushed to fourth place as the track dried at the end.

After the confusion of the final Superpole qualifying sessions both top Kawasaki riders are still in strong positions for raceday itself, after finding good solutions for the Silverstone challenge relatively late on in race weekend.

They each now face two 18-lap races on Sunday, with Tom looking to add to his season tally of five race wins, and Loris trying to repeat his first career win at Silverstone in 2012.

Mark Aitchison (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) was 16th after regulation qualifying, one place up on Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini).

Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki) was the top Ninja ZX-10R rider in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup combined qualifying sheets in fourth and leading a run of five Kawasaki riders from fourth to eighth place.

Tom Sykes:
?If those are the rules then that?s what happens but at least we got back to the second row and not the third. There had four minutes left of the session when they stopped it and turned it into a wet Superpole. I am far from happy because nobody even looked at a wet tyre. On the positive side tomorrow is another day and row two is not too bad. We have struggled a little bit all weekend but when it really mattered Kawasaki, the boys, and especially my crew chief Marcel have given me a package that I was able to do something good with. I was more comfortable on the bike in that session and the lap time was not so bad. I was riding easier than I had been all weekend. My qualifying time that got cut was really good. I will just re-set myself for tomorrow now. It is the race result that counts, second row is good and we have a strong race setting.?

Loris Baz: ?I do not know whether to be happy or gutted! This morning when I woke up I never thought that I would be able to get fourth place after Superpole. Honestly I do not understand the rule that we have to stop in Superpole three and then have 20 minutes of ?wet? Superpole. All the same I made a very good time in Superpole ? can I say ? Superpole ?four?. Then the track dried out near the end and I was able to take the top position again, until I got stuck behind another rider in two crucial corners. That was a big shame and maybe it just was not my day. I am really confident for tomorrow now and I want to thank my team who did a mega job yet again.?

RE-RUN SUPERPOLE ROBS CAMIER OF FRONT ROW

FIXI Crescent Suzuki's Leon Camier saw a front-row start cruelly disappear when the session he was competing in at Silverstone in England was cancelled due to rain during this afternoon's Superpole at the eni FIM Superbike World Championship event.

Camier had continued with the form he showed on Friday by finishing this morning's second qualifying session on top of the time-sheets, to give him second overall on combined times and followed that up with third in the final free practice to signify his intentions for the Superpole. The Englishman - who celebrates his birthday tomorrow - made his way comfortably through Superpole 1 and 2 and into the third and most significant session. Camier immediately used a qualifying tyre and set a very impressive lap-time to take third place and what looked like the team's first front-row start of the season. As the session wore on, small spots of rain fell around the 5,902m Silverstone circuit and immediately Race Control red flagged the session and declared a Wet Superpole, making all the previous times void. This led to a 20-minute session that would decide the front three rows. Camier started well on his Yoshimura-powered Suzuki GSX-R and was again in third when larger spots of rain fell, forcing all riders back to the pits. As the rain cleared the track was dry enough for some fast times, but unfortunately Camier wasn't able to improve on his time and will start tomorrow's two races from seventh place.

Jules Cluzel again made another step in the second qualifying by taking a further 0.7 seconds off his best time from yesterday and making his way into Superpole. He again showed his qualifying skill as he set the fastest time in Superpole 1, but wasn't able to replicate that and missed out on progressing to the final session by just 0.008 seconds. His time was good enough to give him 10th place on the grid and a start immediately behind his team-mate.

Sunday's two 18-lap races look to be an exciting affair with both FIXI Crescent Suzuki riders determined to perform well in front of the team's home crowd and the many sponsors, partners and guests that will be joining them at Silverstone. The first race is scheduled to get underway at 12.00hrs local time, with race two ready for the off at 15.30hrs.

Leon Camier:

"I'm really upset by what happened in Superpole, but it is what it is and we have to accept it. We have been second or third in every session so far this weekend and I was third in Superpole 3, which I thought was good enough, but typically with how our luck seems to go, it sort of half dribbled at the wrong time and my time didn't count. The few spots of rain didn't affect us as we had already done the lap-time, but even when I was on my lap it wasn't enough to slow me down, but they decided to stop it and end the session anyway - which was really frustrating. In the wet Superpole I went out on race-tyres and instantly went fast because it wasn't wet and I set the third fastest time, which again I thought would be good enough because it did start to rain a bit more, but again it proved that it wasn't. We went out at the end and I tried the kerbs to see if there was enough grip, but there wasn't and I had a bit of a moment so I backed off, but everyone else went quicker and that was the end of it. We have improved this weekend though and the bike is working really well, we still need to find a bit of consistency on race tyres, but I am sure we can be challenging tomorrow; they are long races and anything can happen."

Jules Cluzel:

"I was happy with the feeling in Superpole, because we have improved the bike and I had a good feeling with the race-tyre. I put in a qualifier for the first Superpole, the bike was great and I could do a really good lap-time. In Superpole 2 I started with another race-tyre and did a better time and the feeling was still improving, so this is good for the race. With the second qualifier I expected to improve, but I had a strange sensation from the front and I nearly crashed, so I didn't have the best feeling and I made a big mistake in the last sector, so this cost me a place in Superpole 3. I am disappointed about this, but happy with the way the weekend has gone because I am here to improve on every exit and I have done that and now tomorrow I think we can make a good race."

Paul Denning -Team Manager:

"In terms of outright performance, it's been another positive day at Silverstone for the FIXI Crescent Suzuki team. Leon was quickest in final qualifying this morning, third in free practice and looked to have qualified third in Superpole when the weather and some bad luck intervened. I don't really have too much to say about that, other than I hope it doesn't compromise the race tomorrow, but starting from seventh isn't a complete disaster and we're looking forward to Leon translating the pace he's had all weekend into two very good results tomorrow.

"Jules has found more confidence today and Les - his Crew Chief - has worked patiently to improve the GSX-R. He only missed the final nine in Superpole by just eight-thousandths-of-a-second and improved his race pace. He's enjoying riding the bike now, which is a big part of any riders' performance, so we hope he can show his racing spirit tomorrow and make us proud."

Silverstone - eni FIM Superbike World Championship - Wet Superpole: 1. Eugene Laverty (Aprilia) 2. Carlos Checa (Ducati) +0.219: 3. Jonathan Rea (Honda) 0.348: 4. Loris Baz (Kawasaki) +0.375: 5. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) +1.219. 7. Leon Camier (FIXI Crescent Suzuki) +2.045. 10 Jules Cluzel (FIXI Crescent Suzuki).

Turbulent Superpole at Silverstone

It was a difficult Saturday for the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team at Silverstone, but it ended in a kind of a conciliatory manner. Factory rider Chaz Davies achieved the set target, which was to start from the front two rows. The Welshman finished sixth in today's turbulent Superpole qualifying with his BMW S 1000 RR, thus starting the ninth round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship from the second row. His team-mate Marco Melandri was denied of his chance to attack in the Superpole qualifying by a mechanical issue and will start tomorrow's races from 15th on the grid.

The day began according to plan with the team continuing the preparation work in this morning's second qualifying practice. But during the free practice session in the early afternoon, luck changed for the squad. Chaz was forced back to the garage with a mechanical issue and lost a lot of track time. Marco crashed and had to be taken to the medical centre but fortunately he suffered only minor injuries and was ready to start in the following Superpole qualifying.

However, Marco was only able to do one flying lap before he had to stop beside the track because of a mechanical issue. Consequently, Superpole was over for him and he had to settle with 15th. Chaz meanwhile did two outings in the first part of the session. For the second one he used qualifying tyres and set the best time to progress to the next session. He made it through Superpole 2 into the final and deciding third session by using his other qualifying tyre. In Superpole 3, Chaz tried to do his best on race tyres, when the session was red flagged as it started to rain in parts of the track. The modus was changed to a "wet Superpole" of 20 minutes for those nine riders who had qualified for Superpole 3. Conditions were changing during this session and track action was quite reduced, but towards the end the track dried again and with three minutes to go, the riders went out again to battle a final showdown for the grid positions with Chaz putting in the sixth fastest time.

In the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, Sylvain Barrier from the BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team secured his fifth pole position of the season in a dominant manner. The Frenchman broke the lap record by over seven tenths with his BMW HP4. His team-mate Greg Gildenhuys qualified 20th.

Chaz Davies: "We have reached the target of starting from the first two rows which is good but it was sort of a strange day. I have to admit that I was not totally happy with the bike in Superpole, it was a bit hard to ride. For one lap, when you try to squeeze out everything, it is a bit tough going but over race distance we did not seem to be too bad this morning. I have been reasonably happy with that but we still have to improve as the bike is struggling over the bumps. So we will work on that tonight and get it right for tomorrow. In the races we will be pushing for the podium. For sure it will be interesting because some guys have a good pace but I am not sure how sustainable that is over race distance here. The grip drops off pretty quickly here so we have to see how it goes tomorrow."

Marco Melandri:
"It was a difficult day. This morning I crashed quite heavily and hit the ground with my right hand and elbow. Now I have some pain in the fingers and I cannot bend my elbow properly. For this reason I cannot quickly release the brake and open the throttle. In Superpole, I did my best. I bit the bullet but then I had a mechanical issue on the second lap and in the end I could not take part in the qualifying session. The bike still struggles with the bumps but we are working on it. To start from the fifth row doesn't make it easier, even if, in the end, we're not really that bad. Now I need to rest to try to be in the best condition for tomorrow."

Serafino Foti (Sport Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "It was not a good day. On this track we struggle with the bumpy surface and we also had some bad luck. Marco, after this morning's crash, tried to take part in Superpole despite the pain but then could only do one lap due to a mechanical issue. We still have some work to do to make the bike ready for the race as we were not able to complete our job. In addition, Marco probably will have some pain tomorrow but I'm sure he will do his best to limit the damage and to get the best result he can. Chaz is quite satisfied, he feels a little more comfortable than Marco on this track and over the day he was able to improve his performance. He is on good form for tomorrow. In the warm-up we will work further on improving our performance.

In the Superstock class, Sylvain claimed pole position and also set a new lap record, being seven tenths faster than the old best lap time. This is a very good result which makes us really confident for tomorrow. We only hope that the weather will be good, because tomorrow we will have two Superstock races and results will be very important for the championship. Greg needs some more time to learn the track."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "Today we experienced the tough side of racing. Unfortunately we had some issues with both riders. Chaz had a mechanical issue during the free practice so he could not ride through all the session. Marco also had an unlucky free practice. He crashed and for sure he was not in the best shape for Superpole but then unfortunately he could not ride due to another issue. Overall I must say that Chaz managed to qualify on the second row which is a good position considering all the adversities we have had and the good point is that he was able to improve the feeling with the bike. He is still not 100 percent comfortable with the bike's behaviour as he experiences some vibrations but we have another chance tomorrow during the warm-up where we are going to test something else in order to allow him to fight at the front.

Also Marco has improved his feeling for the bike, the rear end is better than yesterday and this was proven by the fact that he was doing faster lap times. Also the rhythm is not too bad. But it will be very important to understand what his condition will be tomorrow and starting from the fifth row does not help but he has shown us in the past that he is able to make a very good start and tomorrow he will need one of his best. Then we are confident that he will able to catch up with the other guys and try to fight for the top positions."

Baz Wins Race Two For KRT At Silverstone As Sykes Gathers Points
WSBK, Silverstone, Great Britain, 4 August 2013
Loris Baz repeated his 2012 Silverstone race one win for his KRT squad with a race two victory today, in what were changeable weather conditions. Tom Sykes remains second overall in the championship
Baz Wins Race Two For KRT At Silverstone As Sykes Gathers Points
Loris joined the race winners? list in 2013 with a strong start-to-finish performance in race two that made up for what he saw was losing a sure podium finish in the opening race. He eventually finished fifth in the first race of the day, also held in ever-changing conditions. Tom Sykes finished 11th in race one while in race two he scored valuable points for seventh place.

Both races at Silverstone witnessed falls of rain, some small and some more intense, but under the flag-to-flag rules for this season the riders stayed out on slicks in both races.

The second race, led in the early dry stages by Loris for almost ten laps, was a strong early showing for both KRT riders, until the rains re-appeared and championship challenger Sykes slowed his pace to make sure he could finish the race and score points in both contests.

In the championship fight Tom is still second, now 13 points behind Sylvain Guintoli, while Loris is sixth - but equal on points with the rider in fifth place.

Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) scored points for 13th in race two, while Mark Aitchison (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) was first 15th then 14th in his SBK comeback ride.

Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki) was second in the first Superstock 1000 race of the Silverstone weekend, with Leandro Mercado and Lorenzo Savadori (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) were second and third in race two. Guarnoni and Mercado are now third equal on points in the championship fight.

Loris Baz: ?After race one I was really disappointed because I was fighting for the podium but maybe I was thinking too much about this and made a lot of mistakes, so I finished fifth. In race two I said to myself, ?OK, this one is mine.? In the first part of the race, even in the dry, I had good pace and I pushed at the front. I tried to control the pace from the front but there were some fast people behind me and it was difficult to go away. Every time somebody tried to pass me I passed them back and at the end the conditions were really wet and I nearly fell. I want to say thanks my team because they are making a really good job with this bike for not just Tom or me but for both riders. Now I feel really comfortable. I also want to dedicate this victory to Andrea Antonelli?s family.?

Tom Sykes: ?Race two was similar to race one and today in these weather conditions it was always going to be a difficult one. I was not prepared to put too much on the line in these kinds of conditions - slick tyres, rain falling - and that is just the way it is. I was not prepared to gamble too much and we saw how easy it was for people to crash, so taking some points is better than taking none. I do not like thinking about the championship but I was maybe forced to think a little bit about it in race two. We have not given away too much to the championship leader. We struggled a little bit in the beginning of race two as the rear tyre did not feel as strong as in race one but I know the Ninja ZX-10R is working well. Congratulations to Loris on his win and after the summer break we will move on and see what we can do at some circuits we should do well at.?

Jonathan Rea wins at Silverstone

Pata Honda?s Jonathan Rea won the first of today?s two ninth-round World Superbike championship races at Silverstone in the UK ? his 11th series victory ? and followed up with fourth in race two, which was stopped early because of rain.

It was a day of mixed conditions at the 5.902km Silverstone circuit, with race one delayed by 20 minutes and shortened by one lap, but starting dry. As light rain began to fall on lap six, however, 26-year-old Rea moved to the front and extended his lead to more than six seconds before easing off in the closing two laps.

Rea?s Pata Honda team-mate, Leon Haslam, climbed as high as third place during the damp conditions of race one, but slipped back to finish seventh at the flag. The 30-year-old crashed out two laps from the end of race two, bringing out the red flags as rain fell once more on the Northamptonshire circuit. Haslam landed heavily on the left leg that he broke in a crash at Assen earlier in the season, although precautionary x-rays revealed no further damage.

Rea got a slow start to race two, circulating in ninth place before making a steady climb towards another podium challenge. However, the red flags prevented any further progress, leaving Rea as the overall Silverstone winner as the Superbike World Championship goes into a month-long summer break.

Jonathan Rea ? 1st and 4th

Race one was probably one of the sweetest victories of my career because to ride out-front in those conditions was quite scary. I was so happy for the whole team and our sponsors, but I had to be very cautious. I also had to be smart and, as I saw the gap heading into the last few laps, I didn?t want to be throwing away that kind of lead. My team gave me a great bike after we pulled something out for Superpole that worked in the dry. We made a good change for race two and got up to fourth after I got stuck behind Tom Sykes for a few laps. I lost way too much time at the beginning but I was happy to do a 2m05s lap in the later stages. The race two result was OK but we can go into the summer break happy enough that we?ve got an overall package that can challenge for podiums.

Leon Haslam ? 7th and DNF

It?s been a frustrating weekend really and we?ve had issues right the way through until warm-up this morning. We made a big step forward for that and I had pretty good pace in race one, but starting from back in twelfth place was quite hard work. I managed to get up to a position to fight for the podium but made a few mistakes late on and missed out on that. I got a terrible start to race two and got stuck behind Guigliano but started to make my way through and into the top 10. Unfortunately, the rain came and I got caught out with a big highside. My leg?s pretty sore and I?ve got an operation to take some screws out this week. A month off will be good for the leg though, and in Germany I know I?ll be a lot fitter. At least we know the bike?s working in in-between conditions, with Johnny?s race one win, but we?re also still making good progress day-by-day in full dry conditions.

Pieter Breddels ? technical co-ordinator

Both races were rain-affected and conditions got really tricky in race one but Jonathan went to the front and gave us our first win of the season, which we were all delighted with. Leon was really fast in the intermediate conditions but slipped back a bit when it dried up at the end. In race two Jonathan got held up a bit and lost some time, but he got back up to fourth when the rain came back. All-in-all it was a good weekend for him. Leon?s pace was not so good in race two and he crashed, but fortunately he?s OK. The break will do him and everyone in the team some good but we?re looking forward to coming back at the Nurburgring.

Fighting hard without reward

The BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team experienced a turbulent race day at Silverstone, venue of the ninth round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship. The day saw unpredictable weather conditions, high hopes to finish on the podium and a difficult end for the team. Factory rider and local hero Chaz Davies fought for the victory in race two but had to retire for a technical issue. In race one he finished tenth after a strong start. His team-mate Marco Melandri tried to make the best of his 15th position on the grid, crossing the line in ninth in both races and thus collecting more important points with his BMW S 1000 RR. There was reason to celebrate however: Sylvain Barrier from the BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team secured victory in both of today's Superstock 1000 races.

The start of the first Superbike race was delayed by 20 minutes for safety reasons as light rain started to fall just as the riders were preparing on the grid. Conditions were mostly dry when the race - shortened to 17 laps - started. Chaz, who started from sixth, was fighting within the leading group in the early stages, setting his sights on a podium position, but he dropped back later. Marco meanwhile had improved to the top 10 after having started from 15th. From lap six on, drops of rain fell all over the circuit, making the conditions difficult to judge. From that moment on there were many position changes throughout the field. After 17 tricky laps, Marco and Chaz finished ninth and tenth respectively.

Race two turned out to be another thriller with Chaz as one of the protagonists. In the close group of frontrunners, he had amazing battles with his competitors for the victory and podium positions, temporarily taking the lead. But Chaz' hopes for a victory or podium on home soil ended on lap 15, when he was stopped by a technical issue with the engine. Shortly after, the race was red flagged as it started to rain again and two riders crashed out. Marco improved from 15th to eighth during the opening stages of the race, but then went wide and dropped back to 14th. He tried to work his way back towards the front and finished ninth in the end. The races were won by Jonathan Rea and Loris Baz. After nine rounds of the 2013 season, Marco is fourth in the riders' championship with 221 points, 41 points off the lead. Chaz follows directly behind in fifth with 180 points. In the Manufacturers' classification, BMW is currently third with 276 points.

In the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup - unusually - two races were contested today. Sylvain started with his BMW HP4 from pole position. In race in the morning one he had to take part in a close fight against his competitors to celebrate his first victory of the day. In race two, he managed to build a gap to the rest of the field and secured the win again, his fifth of the season. His BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team mate Greg Gildenhuys (RSA), who was racing at Silverstone for the first time, finished 14th and 12th. In the Riders' classification, Sylvain has now 145 points and has extended his lead to 36 points. In the Manufacturers' classification, BMW is leading with 156 points.

Marco Melandri: "To start from the back of the grid is really not easy. In race one, in dry conditions, I was quite fast, but in some turns I had some vibrations which didn't allow me to go at a constantly fast rhythm over the course of a lap. Then the weather changed and in the long turns I was not able to keep the right temperature of the tyres. I preferred not to risk anything and to get the best possible result limiting the damage.

Race two, unfortunately, did not go very well. After a couple of laps, while I was gaining positions, I went wider and I lost contact to the riders in front. I tried to attack once more but I had many vibrations and I was not able to ride well. Luckily I didn't lose many points from the leader in the rankings. The break before the race weekend at N?rburgring will help us to take a rest and to enable us to start the final part of the season in the best way."

Chaz Davies: "Race one was not too bad in the beginning. My pace was good and even if I was not completely happy with the bike, we were there lying in fourth, right in the group. So that was okay. Then the rain started and I was struggling to judge the conditions. I had a couple of slides on the side of the tyre off the gas which made me a little bit cautious. Then in certain times the race came to me but the rain started to make it difficult.

In race two we were doing what we could do and I tried to get the victory. The bike was a bit better than in race one for stability in the rear. Then in the end it started to rain again and this played a part but at this point we were still in the hunt to win the race. Then I had the issue with the engine. It was frustrating. It would have been nice to at least be on the podium at my home round but unfortunately we did not have a great day today."

Andrea Buzzoni (General Manager BMW Motorrad WSBK): "We need to keep our focus on the championship and this is what the team did and will continue to do, proving to be consistent and solid. The results from this weekend do not show our potential, it has been an unusual day. In race one, unstable weather conditions led to differing priorities within the field. In race two, Chaz could have won or at least have been on the podium, but he was stopped by a technical issue which denied us success. The team continued to work in a professional way and kept morale high in a difficult situation. Luckily the results do not have too much of a negative effect on us in terms of the overall rankings and at N?rburgring, we will come back to fight for victories. On the other hand, we had a fantastic day in the Superstock class. The team and the guys from BMW Motorrad HP RaceSupport in Munich made an excellent job. Sylvain showed, once more, that he is a consistent and mature rider, winning two fantastic races."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "Today both of our riders had very difficult races. We have seen signs of improvement from yesterday. Chaz has improved his feeling with the bike, especially in race two, and he was doing a fantastic race and I have to congratulate him and his crew. But unfortunately he could not finish due to an issue with the engine. We are sorry for him and it was a pity for all of us. But this is racing; now we must learn from what happened and then improve and be ready for N?rburgring. For Marco for sure it was not easy to start from 15th on the grid. He made two good starts and he could do quite fast lap times, better than the ones he did on Friday and Saturday. In doing so, he showed that he had improved his feeling for the bike but it still was not enough. He was struggling in both races with the front end of the bike going in and this was limiting him overtaking people. For sure the weather conditions did not help, but this was the same for everybody and it is not an excuse. We must improve our package in order to be ready next time, whatever the weather will be like."
