KRT Riders Head For New SBK Track On Top Form

Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia is a first time venue for the FIM Superbike World Championship and KRT SBK riders Tom Sykes and Loris Baz, plus KRT SBK Evo rider David Salom, will arrive there for this new challenge on a wave of strong recent results and optimism.

Reigning World Champion Sykes re-took the championship lead on his official Ninja ZX-10R at his home round of Donington Park last time out, thanks to a double race win, while Loris Baz was second in each race in England.

David Salom was twice the Donington race winner in the Evo championship fight, and now leads his closest challenger by eight points in a class which runs full Superbike chassis rules but features virtually stock engine parts.

With four full race wins this season so far Sykes has more than any other riders as he now enjoys a 26-point lead in the table. He has also ridden at the Sepang circuit, located on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, some years ago. This puts him in a better position than some of his rivals, but less so compared to those who have had extensive experience in MotoGP racing. Sepang is a popular MotoGP racing and testing venue, but this will be the very first time it has been used to host a full SBK race.

The 21-year-old Baz has never ridden at this long and technical circuit before but has been studying its layout from GP television coverage and computer game imagery. After five rounds of the season Loris is looking for his first win of an impressive 2014 season, which sees him equal second in the points totals, 26 behind Sykes, but ranked third overall as he has yet to win a race in 2014.

The Kawasaki Racing Team?s SBK Evo class rider, David Salom, has been on scintillating form in 2014, despite suffering from a right hand injury, which has held him back from his absolute best at times. The combination of Sepang rookie Salom and his Evo spec Ninja ZX-10R is nonetheless expected to shine strongly in the intense Malaysian heat.

There will be an extra-long 75-minute first practice session at the 5.548km Sepang International Circuit on Friday, to allow all the riders and teams to get accustomed to this new venue.

The now regular SBK rhythm of one race every two weekends continues after Sepang when Misano in Italy hosts the seventh round of the series, between June 20 and 22.

Tom Sykes: ?I have ridden at Sepang before, some years ago, and I enjoyed it. It is quite a long circuit, wide and technical. I think the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R should have good potential there and I am really looking forward to riding it again on Friday. We will have a longer first practice session than normal to learn the circuit. Because it is such a wide layout it allows more space for passing opportunities, which makes for both safer and better racing. Sepang is technical in its layout and because it is so wide you can be tempted to use all the track width sometimes. I will have been in Malaysia for quite a few days when we arrive at race weekend because I have done some promotional work with Dorna and the Sepang Circuit organisers. This is the third time I have been in Malaysia and everybody has been very hospitable and made me feel very welcome. I have visited the manufacturer of the trophies that will be given out at Sepang and I did a long TV interview. I also rode a Ninja ZX-10R in Kuala Lumpur city centre after they closed off a street to allow us to hold a promotional event.?

Loris Baz: ?After the previous round at Donington I have to be really happy because everything went well. It was a circuit I had always been slower at than the other riders and it is Tom?s home track, so it was really good to finish close to him in each race. Now the good tracks are coming for us. I am hoping to catch up a little bit in the championship and see where we can go from there. I have never been to Sepang so I only know the track from the Playstation. It looks really nice and I have been watching the GP races there every year. I know it will be hot and humid but I have been training for those conditions and I think it will be no real problem. The circuit looks wide and quite fast so I am really looking forward to this race and enjoying the track. I am sure with the extra long practice session we will have on Friday I can learn the track well. From there we can start to build for the weekend.?

David Salom: ?The challenge this weekend is maybe more difficult than normal as I have only seen this track on TV and on the Playstation, which I have been practicing on to find out where the corners go. It should be a good track for us because it has big straights and wide corners. There are two or three hard braking sections but I think I have more time in the straights to relax my hand between the corners than most other circuits. The engine on our bike is good, fast, and in the corners our bike has been working well. We have eight points more than the next rider and that is a good gap for Kawasaki and me at this stage of the season. We have four races before the summer break comes along and now we are in a good situation.?

Pata Honda heads east to new SBK circuit

The Pata Honda team is preparing for this weekend?s (6-8 June) two sixth-round World Superbike championship races at the Sepang International Circuit near Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

The weekend marks the first visit of the World Superbike championship to Sepang, situated just 60km to the south of the centre of the Malaysian capital, as the production-based series spreads to an increasingly wider global audience.

It will be the first time that the Pata Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP has been raced at the fast and flowing 5.548km Sepang circuit, which is characterised by two back-to-back straights at the end of the lap. However, the team?s two British riders Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam have both visited in the past.

Northern Irishman Rea, 27, tested Honda?s RC212V MotoGP machine at Sepang at the end of 2011, while 31-year-old Haslam from Derbyshire last raced there during a season on a 250cc Honda in Grands Prix in 2002.

Sepang International Circuit, World Superbike schedule (local times GMT+8hrs):

Friday 6 June

10.30-11.45 - Free Practice 1

15.30-16.15 - Free Practice 2

(timed for Superpole)

Saturday 7 June

09.45-10.30 - Free Practice 3

(timed for Superpole)

12.30-13.00 - Free Practice 4

15.00-15.15 - Superpole 1

15.25-15.40 - Superpole 2

Sunday 8 June

09.30-09.45 - Warm-up

13.30 - Race 1 (16 laps, 88.768km)

16.30 - Race 2 (16 laps, 88.768km)

Jonathan Rea

I?m really excited about going to Malaysia because it?s a new race on the SBK calendar. I really like the circuit layout and I visited a few years ago when I did some testing for HRC?s MotoGP team in the last season of the 800s. Donington was a tough round for us and we turned our attention to this next round immediately after the races there. I hope we can achieve better results than at Donington and I?m really looking forward to the challenge of taking the CBR on a new circuit. The humidity will be quite intense in Sepang and we?re expecting high temperatures but I?m in good physical conditions to tackle the two races. The most important thing is that we are able to extract the full potential of the bike which we didn?t do at the last round.

Leon Haslam

I?ve been to Sepang before - it was about 12 years ago, but I remember which way it goes so I don?t see it being too much of a problem. A few of the other riders have ridden there, too, including Johnny, so I?m not sure anyone will have too much of an advantage in that respect. It?s quite a fast and flowing track and the CBR should be quite strong in those areas. The heat will be an issue, of course, and the conditions can make a big difference in lap times from the morning to the afternoon. We?ll hope for some consistent weather that will help us with setting up the bike for Sunday?s races.

Pieter Breddels - technical co-ordinator

Donington was a disappointment for the whole team, especially after the highs of Assen and Imola. However, we have studied a lot in the time since and we have some plans for this next event at Sepang, where we will be bringing some things that we learned on the dyno. Jonathan is motivated and ready to go again, so I hope he can renew his challenge at the top of the table. Leon has been very close to the breakthrough to consistent top five finishes that we?ve all been looking for, and we will be working hard again to make it happen for him this weekend.

Sorry that Im late with all news but I got very limited internet connections....

LAVERTY TOP-6 IN SEPANG WSB PRACTICE

Team Suzuki Press Office ? June 6.

Eugene Laverty started Voltcom Crescent Suzuki?s tropical eni FIM Superbike World Championship debut at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia today with a solid sixth position in the first day?s practice sessions.

With an extended 75 minutes on-track for the opening session, allowing the riders time to learn the new circuit, Laverty and team-mate Alex Lowes did just that aboard their respective Yoshimura-powered GSX-Rs. Both used the initial half-an-hour to get up to speed, the real business of set-up specifics left for the remaining 45-minute stint. A small crash at turn four in the last 12 minutes of the session, however, left the Irishman little chance to improve and while Lowes finished just inside the top 10, Laverty missed the marker by 100th of a second to hold 11th.

Friday afternoon saw air temperatures soar to 31?C with 70% humidity making it feel much higher and little changed in the times during the opening 20 minutes of free practice two. Lowes was one of the first to improve his lap at the session?s midpoint to take seventh with a 2'06.089 before returning to the pits for a set-up change. The closing minutes saw the times start to tumble with all but two of the front runners improving. Laverty put his Suzuki GSX-R1000 in fifth position with a time of 2'05.356 with just five minutes to go, but was relegated to sixth in the dying minutes by Ducati?s Davide Giugliano. Lowes maintained his 10th-place spot and heads into tomorrow?s final timed free practice session with a solid 31 lap knowledge of the Asian circuit.

Aprilia?s Sylvain Guintoli took the fastest time of the day, just inside the 2?05 barrier.

With marginally cooler conditions forecast for tomorrow?s third free practice session, scheduled at 09:45hrs local time (02:45BST), Voltcom Crescent Suzuki will look to capitalise on the information gained today in a bid to secure its places in the final of the afternoon?s two Superpole sessions. Qualifying begins at 15:00hrs local time (08:00BST) with the top 12 in action at 15:25hrs (08:25BST).

Eugene Laverty:

?This morning we were a long way off but this afternoon we jumped-up to within a quarter of a second of the top guys so our bike is working the best it has done in these hot and slippery conditions. We definitely made a step chassis wise. For qualifying I need to be in the top six, like I am now; I need to be on those first two rows! We need to improve the starts because that?s been a real thorn in my side this year, I sometimes go backwards on the first lap and have to work hard to get back, which is too late, so that?s key for tomorrow.?

Alex Lowes:

?The track is good, it?s nice to ride at Sepang as it?s a fantastic circuit, but I didn?t feel that good on the bike today, so we need to improve a lot tomorrow ahead of the afternoon?s qualifying. I will put my head together with my Crew Chief Lez this evening to see how we can get closer to the front runners and, after good night?s sleep to process what I?ve learnt today, I?ll be raring to go for the rest of the weekend.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?Both team and riders have worked hard in the heat today and in the end settled into a pretty good position as we approach qualifying tomorrow. Eugene had a very small crash this morning, losing the front into turn four, but aside from that his rhythm and the setting of the GSX-R has improved step-by-step and it will have done Eugene?s confidence some good to end the day; on such a long lap, only a couple of 10ths-off first position. His recent testing on the Suzuki MotoGP bike doesn?t appear to have affected his feel for the GSX-R at all and I think we can continue to take decent steps forward tomorrow.

?Alex is a little bit disappointed with his lap time and position but I don?t think he should be. Unlike many of the guys in front of him he?s never seen the Sepang circuit before and it does make a decent difference to knowing the feeling and what should be expected. There are some improvements to make, especially gear ratio choice and the turning of the bike, but I think the biggest help to the performance tomorrow will be coming back to the circuit and understanding how to get round the track quickly.?

Sepang ? eni FIM Superbike World Championship ? Free Practice combined times: 1. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) 2?05.096; 2. Marco Melandri (Aprilia) +0.071; 3. Toni Elias (Aprilia) +0.126; 4. Davide Giugliano (Ducati) +0.182; 5. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) +0.187; 6. Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) +0.260. 10. Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki +0.993.

Front Row Start For Sykes At Sepang

Reigning FIM Superbike World Champion Tom Sykes got to within 0.106 seconds of pole position at Sepang, finishing second in Superpole 2 and earning himself a start from the front row of the grid for Sunday?s races. Loris Baz was unhurt in a late session fall in Superpole 2 but is still starting off the second row, in sixth place. KRT SBK Evo rider David Salom was fastest Evo qualifier of all.

Sykes used his Ninja ZX-10R to good effect in Superpole 2 on a qualifying tyre but was not quite able to take his 21st pole position. With no points available for qualifying the series leader understands that the real job starts tomorrow, as he goes for more wins to add to his 2014 season tally of four so far.

With no SBK race held at Sepang before, Sykes had to work hard in qualifying to unlock the secrets of the Sepang circuit on his latest version Ninja ZX-10R, having tested at the Malaysian track some years ago. Now his final raceday set-up depends on the weather and track conditions at a circuit which always delivers heat and humidity at high levels.

Baz was fully 0.6 seconds under the best Superpole 2 lap time until he fell at the final corner of his last lap. In starting off the second row he still has a good opportunity to make the most of what he feels is a strong race pace. His performances so far, at a circuit he had never ridden at before until Friday, have been very impressive as he had learned the layout step-by-step.

On the Evo spec KRT Ninja ZX-10R David Salom had his first ever Evo class pole position, and he was the only Evo rider to progress from Superpole 1 to Superpole 2. He starts from 12th on the grid, off the fourth row, but in the best possible place to try and dictate pace in the Evo class race-within-a-race.

The two SBK races will held over 16 laps on Sunday 8th June, with the first off at 13.30 local time in Malaysia and the second race taking place at 16.30.

Tom Sykes: ?We have been quite consistent all weekend and on race tyres we are there or thereabouts. I feel we have learned something in the Superpole laps so we will hopefully put that to good use tomorrow. We were not too far away from our competitors and the times have been close, but we will try to work even more to improve the race set-up. I have seen how fast some other riders are on new tyres but everyone will take a drop on raceday as the race unfolds. Exactly how much of a drop, no one will see that true potential until tomorrow. I am hoping that we can be in quite a good position tomorrow for race distance and we just need to improve the general feel to utilise the bike a bit better in some corners. I hope we can make any small changes count.?

Loris Baz:
?All of my final lap I felt like I could brake later and later because the rear grip from the qualifying tyre gave me a lot of extra grip on corner entry. On the last corner I braked just a little bit too late because I had been faster on the straight and I fell. It was a little mistake but I am happy because we improved in all the sessions and we could have been on pole because of the progress we had made. I think we can make something good tomorrow, our race pace is good but we will see how the tyres are after ten laps. I am confident but we have to make a good start to get away with the front guys.?

David Salom: ?We took the Evo class Superpole win for the first time so that cannot be bad. This morning I put a different front tyre in but it was not possible to use it in the hot conditions so I went back to my original choice. I made a good lap in Superpole 1 on my own, not with any other riders. When I saw the time I was not really sure that I would be able to make it in to Superpole 2 but I did. I could not improve in Superpole 2 as I could not go any faster than in Superpole 1. I knew it was not possible to go faster than the full Superbikes anyway, so I am happy to start from where I am on the grid.?

LAVERTY HEADS SEPANG WSB 3RD ROW

Voltcom Crescent Suzuki racer Eugene Laverty secured seventh on the grid for tomorrow?s inaugural eni FIM Superbike World Championship races at the Sepang International Circuit during a blistering Superpole in Malaysia this afternoon.

Laverty narrowly missed-out on a second-row position after setting a time of 2?04.263 to start at the head of the third row for tomorrow?s first Superbike race at the Malaysian circuit. Having initially struggled with set-up, the Irishman settled into a comfortable rhythm with his Yoshimura-powered GSX-R, despite the tropical heat recording highs of 35?C and above, and feels confident that it?s a consistency he can carry through to tomorrow?s two races.

Temperatures had already hit yesterday?s peak by the start of the morning free practice, which saw Alex Lowes miss-out on a top-10 spot and therefore automatic promotion into the second of this afternoon?s Superpole sessions. Enduring the heat for both 15 minute stints, the British rider easily secured his place in the top-12 with a time of 2?05.038 on his second flying lap of the opening session on-board his Suzuki GSX-R1000. While track temperatures soared to 60?C for the final shoot-out the championship rookie continued to improve, a 2?04.433 his fastest time of the day, to round-out the third row in ninth place.

Aprilia?s Sylvain Guintoli continued his weekend form to claim Pole with a 2?03.002.

Sunday?s race action gets underway at 13:30hrs and 16:30hrs local time (06:30 and 09:30 BST) and Voltcom Crescent Suzuki will look to advance early from its third row positions to challenge at the front during its Asian Superbike debut.

Eugene Laverty:

?We almost got the second row that I was after, but I made a mistake at the end of my best lap that otherwise would have got us there. P7 was a good day?s work considering we lost most of free practice four with a technical problem. The bike is working well in the hot conditions and it looks like tomorrow afternoon will be just that, so I need to get a good start and see how race one goes!?

Alex Lowes:

?We are slowly getting there, it?s been quite difficult this weekend, but we improved a little bit for qualifying and being in Superpole 1 actually gave me a bit more time to try a few things. I?m happy enough but it?s going to be some hard racing tomorrow. Hopefully we can make a few more changes to the front of the bike in warm-up and enjoy two good races.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?We have been improving the bike and the potential over the course of the weekend and we got a little bit closer to the fastest guys in qualifying today. Eugene was definitely good for the second row, but a mistake in the final corner cost us half a second, which has just knocked us back a little bit. Alex has improved considerably, and to come from Superpole 1 and end up-on the third row is not a bad result. The top-three riders seem to have a different level of pace here, especially on the new tyres, but after only four-or-five laps, the grip is going to be gone for everybody and the race result will be defined by maintaining a decent lap-time for 16 laps. We will do our best to get the GSX-R set-up to accomplish the best result we possibly can tomorrow.?

Sepang ? eni FIM Superbike World Championship ? Superpole: 1. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) 2?03.002; 2. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) +0.106; 3. Davide Giugliano (Ducati) +0.135; 4. Toni Elias (Aprilia) +0.158; 5. Marco Melandri (Aprilia) +0.969. 7. Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) +1.261. 9. Alex Lowes Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) +1.431.

Sykes Podiums And Maintains Championship Lead

Tom Sykes (KRT) scored a third place in race two to recover from a race one DNF and keep his championship lead after six rounds of the championship have been completed. Loris Baz (KRT) secured a fifth place finish in race two, while David Salom won the first SBK Evo race of the day and has a clear lead in the Evo points table.

2013 World Champion Sykes qualified in second place on the Sepang grid on his Ninja ZX-10R and after a coming together with his team-mate Baz and another rider he recovered from a painful right hand injury to score a strong third place finish in race two. In taking another 16 points to add to his 2014 total he broke through the 200 points barrier and has a 13-point lead over Sylvain Guintoli, 201 to 188.

Baz fell under braking into the second corner of the first lap of race one and after his bike had collided with Sykes?s machine neither rider could restart. Baz recovered strongly in the shortened second race and finished in fifth place, pushing hard in the sweltering conditions. Loris is now fourth in the championship, with 170 points.

David Salom took a stunning win in the Evo class in race one, but a poor start off the line meant he had to fight hard for his overall 13th place finish, and was third in the Evo classifications. In the Evo points table Salom has a 17-point lead.

The second race was only ten laps long, not the planned 16, after an oil spill halted the first start it after only a few laps. Race one went the full 16 laps, which was a test in the high air and track temperatures at the Malaysian circuit. Track temperatures rose to almost 60?C in race two.

Misano in Italy is the venue for the seventh round of the series, with raceday on Sunday 22 June.

Tom Sykes: ?We got a podium and we are still leading the championship, which is very important. We made a change to the machine after Superpole and in warm-up I was very happy with the Ninja ZX-10R and did some great lap times before the race. I was feeling very confident. We had a gap to make up to the Aprilias all weekend but in warm up I felt that we could have gone racing and at least challenged them. I had a bit of a limitation in race two which created a little bit of instability with the bike because I was not able to use my right hand to its full potential. It is was difficult to see the two guys up front go away because if I was riding fit then I think we could have tried to give them something to think about. My crew chief had a good chat with me before race two, and he said we needed to try and do the best we can. Third is the best we could have done in that race.?

Loris Baz: ?In race one I made a good start and Alex Lowes cam inside in the first corner and we were together. I just wanted to pass him in the second one. Tom braked really hard to make sure he did not touch anyone in front of him and I had to brake really strongly too. When I did I lost the front and my bike took him and Alex out. It is a big shame for the team but I could not do anything. For me I crashed alone and my bike took somebody out and unfortunately it was Tom. In race two I tried everything to follow the top three guys but we were missing some grip in the exits of the corners, the slow ones. Here it is worse than most other tracks because the straights after the corners are really long. I lost time in all the straights but I was catching them in the other parts of the race. I made a small change after the red flags came out but I could not do anything more. Maybe I could have been fourth but I lost the rear on the last lap and Toni Elias overtook me on the straight, so that was it. Not the best weekend for sure but it will be OK in Misano.?

David Salom: ?It was great to win in race one but it was very hard. The weather conditions were very difficult but we took the win we wanted and it is because we have worked very hard this weekend and all season. We got more points in the championship after these races. Even if I got beaten in the second race, because I had a really bad start, we still left here with a good championship lead. It was not possible to stay with Leon Camier but I had a fight with the other Evo riders, and beat them to the flag.?

LAVERTY BACK ON THE PODIUM AT SEPANG WSB

Voltcom Crescent Suzuki racer Eugene Laverty stormed to third position at the Sepang International Circuit today in the opening race of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship round in Malaysia.

After starting from seventh on the grid, Laverty avoided the second-corner collision, which brought down three riders including his team-mate Alex Lowes, and got up-to-speed quickly to pursue the front-running pack of four riders. The Irishman held fifth place for the initial eight laps before advancing on Aprilia?s Toni Elias and then Ducati?s Chaz Davies three laps later. He maintained consistent speed on his Yoshimura-powered GSX-R and held third to the line to take a well-deserved podium and 16 championship points.

Race two got underway at 16:30hrs local time and after a red flag four laps in, the 10-lap sprint restart did little to dampen the momentum. Resuming from his previous race position of ninth, Laverty rode a determined race, catching Honda?s Leon Haslam and the Ducati pairing of Davide Giugliano and Davies before running out of laps to catch the next group and taking his GSX-R1000 across the line for seventh.

Despite the collision in the first lap ending his race one campaign early, Lowes regrouped for the second outing, taking his ninth-place spot on the grid for the late afternoon contest. After the brief interruption of the red flag, he restarted the race from 11th and then held 10th for the majority of the shortened 10 lap race; the British racer pushing his Suzuki GSX-R past Giugliano to take ninth on the final lap.

Air temperatures of 32?C left the track a blisteringly hot 52?C for the opening race, rising to 36?C and 59?C respectively for the later outing. Aprilia?s Marco Melandri got the better of his team-mate for the race one win, with a similar manoeuvre on the last lap of the day granting him the double.

Voltcom Crescent Suzuki now travels back to its UK headquarters to continue the motivation in preparation for the Riviera de Rimini round at the Misano World Circuit ?Marco Simoncelli? in Italy on June 22nd.

Eugene Laverty:

?It was fantastic to get back on the podium in race one - a nice reward for all the guys because they deserved it in Donington but I threw it away in race one, so we are back where we belong I think. Race two, with the shorter distance, didn?t suit my Suzuki because we were better on old tyres but it?s been a positive weekend in all and it?s nice to finally be back in the top-three for the first time since Phillip Island.?

Alex Lowes:

?There?s not much I can say about race one, but I definitely learnt something in race two. I really didn?t feel good at all, it was a big impact in the race one crash, but I dug deep and it was a good experience overall on a new circuit. It is a great track here at Sepang and I wish I could have done better, but now I?m really looking forward to Misano and seeing how close we can get to the front.?

Paul Denning - Team Manager:

?Following Alex?s superb podium at Donington, to follow that up with a podium for Eugene in very difficult conditions here at Sepang is a positive sign that we have got the GSX-R in the ball park and hopefully we can create further positive momentum from here on. Eugene?s not in the best of conditions with a broken bone in his right foot and is generally a bit battered after a testing accident last week, but he did very well to not let that affect him and to push forward so strongly and get to the podium in race one. Seventh was disappointing in race two, in that the potential was much better and I believe it was very possible to finish fourth if the race hadn?t been cut to such a short distance of only 10 laps.

?For Alex it has been a tough first visit to Sepang but we could have seen a very strong performance today. Only making one corner in race one before being violently taken out in the accident triggered by Loris Baz?s very rash move caused Alex a fair few injuries and a very severe bang on the head. All things considered he did very well to ride the bike in race two and even better to find a good pace, especially over the final five laps and fight his way up into the top 10. We are looking forward to the next three races at circuits we feel could be very positive for the bike and hope to arrive in Misano with two fit riders and some luck on our side.?
