Super Speeds Imminent For Kawasaki?s Superbike Riders

KRT duo Tom Sykes and Loris Baz are about to take part in the annual visit to the super-fast Monza circuit, with both riders looking for the kind of excellent top three results they enjoyed at Assen.

Kawasaki Racing Team rider Sykes posted a convincing race one win at the previous round in the Netherlands and then followed that up with a second place in race two, results which put him in a strong position revisit a circuit he won at in 2012 on his official Ninja ZX-10R.

With improvements evident Kawasaki Racing Team?s official machines in this year?s SBK fight Sykes is out to move on from the joint second place he holds in the points table going into Monza. He is tied on the same total as two other riders after three rounds and six individual races, with Tom sitting 28 points behind the lead at this early stage of proceedings.

Loris Baz, a wet race winner for the Kawasaki Racing Team back in 2012, had a great recent podium experience at Assen, securing a hard-fought and fully deserved third place in race two in dry conditions. This result has proved that the second regular Kawasaki Racing Team rider in the 2013 entry list is now a contender with the established top runners, despite being only 20 years of age. Baz is sixth in the table after three rounds, just five points behind Jonathan Rea as the Monza weekend approaches.

Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) will compete on his Ninja ZX-10R in the SBK class as usual but with his Swedish team-mate Alex Lundh out with a broken collarbone, suffered in hard fall at Assen, Sandi is partnered by regular CIV rider Fabrizio Lai, in what will be a home race for both riders.

Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and Superstock 600 European Championships will reach round three at the Monza meeting, always a popular venue for fans given the circuit?s close proximity to the major Italian city of Milan.

Tom Sykes: ?I am obviously very motivated off the back of the Assen weekend. It was so enjoyable there because I went there thinking it was not going to be our strongest point in the season but I almost had the full set of two wins and Superpole. Our bike is working great and the changes made to the bike this year look like they are having the desired effect across the board. The wet session in Assen was nice because it ticked off a box that used to have a question mark in it. Moving to Monza now, I am looking forward to it because I won the only race there last year. It is a circuit I enjoy because of some good past results and it is nice to ride as well because it has a great history. The Ninja ZX-10R is a very well balanced package and we are going there to do a job now. The championship position is very unusual with three riders on the same points in second place, although I am not too concerned with the championship placings at this stage. I?m just looking forward to keeping up momentum and improving things again in a couple of areas.?

Loris Baz: ?After the last round I needed some time to relax after doing the Bol d?Or 24-Hour race the weekend before, then going straight to Assen to race in SBK. I was not tired even after the races in the Netherlands but when I got back home I was getting more tired and more tired all the time. Last Wednesday I was destroyed! I trained just a little bit that week but now I have started training hard again. I was really happy with the podium at Assen and it has come along early in the season, earlier than we expected. We knew we were faster than last year in the dry but it is clear everybody has done a good job and we will continue to work in the same positive way. I am confident for this weekend. I know the track at Monza is totally different from Assen and in some ways it looks like it may not be the best track for us. But I am confident because we have made a good improvement in this kind of track, after our performances at Aragon, even in the parts with slower corners. I won a Superstock 600 race at Monza in 2008 and I like the circuit. It has a really fast straight and although we know some other bikes are going to be fast there, we also have a good engine. I feel we can be maybe top five or top six, and that is always the same target.?

FIRST HOME ROUND FOR THE BMW MOTORRAD GOLDBET SBK TEAM

The next round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship marks the first of three home rounds for the German-Italian BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team. The fourth round of the season will see the series head to the iconic "Autodromo Nazionale di Monza" in the north of Italy this weekend. The race track is located close to the Milan headquarters of BMW Motorrad Italia, which is responsible for the works teams' race and test outings as well as the chassis development.

Factory rider Chaz Davies has already celebrated two victories with his BMW S 1000 RR this season. In the Riders' classification, he is currently third with 83 points, tied on points with second placed Eugene Laverty and Tom Sykes (fourth). His Italian team-mate Marco Melandri for several reasons has had a difficult season so far but has finished twice on the podium. He is currently eighth with 51 points. For Marco, Monza is his first home round of the season. In the Manufacturers' Classification, BMW is second with 99 points.

Last year, the action on the Sunday was significantly cut short at Monza. After heavy rainfall, the first race had to be completely cancelled and the second one had to be shortened to eight laps. To prevent a repeat of last year's issues, the track was resurfaced in the 'Parabolica' section in order to improve the drainage and to smoothen the formerly bumpy surface.

For the BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team with riders Sylvain Barrier and Greg Gildenhuys, Monza marks the third round of the 2013 FIM Superstock 1000 Cup. Sylvain won the first race at Arag?n and finished second at round two at Assen on his brand new BMW HP4. In the Riders' classification, he is leading with 45 points.

Chaz Davies: "I am looking forward to Monza. It is quite different to most circuits because the track has not many corners but very fast straights. We have been to the wind tunnel last week and we will try to transfer the things we learned there to Monza. The track with its long straights should suit our powerful RR quite well, and I am confident that we will have one of the most competitive bikes in Monza. But power on the straights is not everything. We will work on further improving the chassis a little bit and on finding the best settings for this track. Overall, I hope for a smoother weekend than in Assen and then we will see how things go. The atmosphere at Italian races is always something special, the fans are so excited and you feel that Italy is the heart of Superbike racing in Europe. Hopefully everybody will have a good weekend and enjoy some exciting racing."

Marco Melandri: "I really like Monza because it is a unique track and in dry conditions it is just a great circuit. In wet conditions, on the contrary, it is really difficult to ride a bike there, so I'm hoping for good weather. Regarding my physical condition, I am pretty satisfied. I am continuing with my training and expect to be quite fit for the race. On the other hand, Monza is not a physicalyl demanding track, so I think that I will not struggle with my shoulder, also because there are not too many corners. It will be really important to exit these corners in the best possible way in order to be as fast as possible on the straights. Unfortunately this is the area where I am still struggling and don't feel as comfortable as I should, but overall I am confident for the races. I think that we are well positioned, especially with our strong BMW engine."

Serafino Foti (Sport Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "Monza is always a special round. The people are looking forward to it and the interest in the race is huge. In addition, the whole team regards Monza as one of their home tracks. Both Marco and Chaz are extremely motivated. Monza is a fast track they really like and, thanks also to the characteristics of our bike, we are sure that both will do very well. Marco will be quite fit for his mission to overcome the unlucky previous race and we are working hard to allow him to be up in the front positions - where he is used to being. Chaz showed in Assen, how maturely he manages tense situations. I am sure that in Monza he will be very strong and put the previous race behind him. In the Superstock class, we have to continue the positive trend. Monza is a track which suits our bike and, even if our rivals will be very competitive, Sylvain and Greg will surely give us a good weekend."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "Monza is another historical race-track. It is unique for several reasons but mainly for its speed. It is the fastest race track of the calendar with an average speed over 200 km/h. There are three straights where we can shift up to sixth gear, reaching more than 320 km/h. In Monza, the engine performance and the aerodynamic package play a very important role, but we should't forget the braking stability and the good handling which are essential in the chicanes around the track. We've been working hard in all the areas of the bike. This included an important test in the wind tunnel in which Chaz, as Marco did last year, focused on finding the best riding position for the long straights. We will find a new track surface at Monza which should have fixed the issues we had last year in the famous 'Parabolica'. We're all hoping for stable weather conditions as we have some work to do on the set-up of the RRs for our two riders. After all the unlucky issues we experienced in Assen, we have worked hard to consolidate our performance, learning from the past and looking forward to be back in the fight with the top riders."

MONZA WSB BECKONS FOR FIXI CRESCENT SUZUKI

FIXI Crescent Suzuki is on its way to the picturesque Monza circuit in Italy for the fourth round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship that will be held this weekend.

Jules Cluzel will be heading to a track that holds happy memories for the Frenchman: He scored his maiden World Supersport victory at the Italian circuit, on his way to runner-up in last year's championship. Cluzel is still on a fast and steep "Superbike" learning curve, so the quick Monza circuit will certainly test his knowledge as he looks to continue with the promising form he has already shown so far this season on the Yoshimura-powered Suzuki.

Leon Camier is still recovering from the knee injury he sustained at Aragon last month; he has now had the stitches removed from the injury and is working hard to regain full fitness and movement in the joint. Camier is looking to the Monza event to regain his riding fitness following a brave comeback at Assen - just two weeks after having surgery on his knee. He showed true determination and courage to produce two good rides in The Netherlands and will now be aiming to take the next step towards full strength and kick-start his season.

The 'Autodromo Nazionale Monza' is a located near the town of Monza, just north of Milan. The 5,777m layout has five left turns and eight right-handers as the configuration makes its way through scenic parkland setting, through many wooded areas and past residential dwellings. It's a mix of very long straights and tight chicanes, making good braking stability and traction as important as the high speeds that the bikes can attain over the layout, especially on its famous 1.195 kilometre long front straight, which sees the riders achieve speeds of over 320 kph. The circuit is often referred to as the 'Temple of Speed' and is a daily destination for tourists from Italy and abroad.

Cluzel and Camier will take to the track for the first free practice session on Friday morning as they begin their preparations for Sunday's two races, the first of which is scheduled to get underway at 12.00hrs local time (11.00hrs BST).

Jules Cluzel:

"I love Monza, so I will be trying my best to get a good result there. It's a very fast track so we have a different set-up for there and I think this will help my riding. It was a completely new circuit to me last season, but I was able to learn the track very quickly and after a few laps I was really enjoying it, and at the end of the weekend I won that race. It has a lot of fast corners and it's really grippy and I went well in the wet and dry conditions last year, but I now have to learn how to ride a Superbike there - which will be very different to the 600 last year. The weather looks like being very good so I'm really looking forward to the weekend."

Leon Camier:

"I'm expecting a pretty hard weekend at Monza, regardless of my fitness. It's a tough and fast circuit to race at, but we have a few things to try and if we get the set-up right and the chassis working well we might be able to make some advantages count on the track that will help us.

"My knee is getting better all the time and I'm working hard to get it fully fit. It was pretty swollen after the race at Assen, but since then I've had the stitches out and it's healed really well. It's ok now, but still quite sore. I've done lots of gym work and a bit of hiking in the mountains to get it stronger and the movement better. It will still take a bit of time to get it 100%, but I am looking forward to getting back on the FIXI Crescent Suzuki to get myself bike fit, especially with my home race coming up soon."

SOLID START AT MONZA FOR FIXI CRESCENT SUZUKI

FIXI Crescent Suzuki racers Leon Camier and Jules Cluzel made a confident start to this weekend's eni FIM Superbike World Championship at Monza as both riders finished inside the top-10 in the opening qualifying session.

With this morning's first free practice session virtually a total wash-out due to heavy showers over the 5,777m Italian circuit, it was imperative that Camier and Cluzel made the most of this afternoon's dry session. Camier was up as high as fourth in the standings, with only a short time to go in the qualifying, but had to pit with a braking issue. He lost out on a higher-placed finish as other riders recorded quicker times than the Englishman in the final few minutes, leaving Camier in ninth place.

Cluzel is making his first appearance at Monza on a Superbike and acquitted himself well to the extra performance of the Yoshimura-powered Suzuki GSX-R. The Frenchman made consistent improvements throughout the session and is convinced he can make further steps tomorrow. He ended the day in 10th and a provisional place in tomorrow's Superpole.

Today's conditions at Monza saw heavy rain and bright sunshine affect the day's proceedings, which led to this afternoon's sessions all being delayed as the track was allowed to dry for safety reasons. Local Italian favourite Marco Melandri on a BMW posted today's' fastest time.

Camier and Cluzel will have a second qualifying session tomorrow morning to confirm their places in the afternoon's Superpole, to give them the chance to battle for the best grid positions.

Leon Camier:

"I'm not particularly comfortable with the bike at the moment; there are a few strong points with it and a few things that we can work on to get it better. I think there could be a bit of a split in the group on race day and we will have to work hard to try and be in the main one. My knee is very sore today, as it's the first time I've ridden since the stitches were removed and it's really rubbing. I'll have some ice treatment on it tonight and hope that it feels a bit stronger in the morning."

Jules Cluzel:

"It was good to ride in the dry this afternoon, because you can learn the speed for this track in the dry and it helps you when you ride in the wet. This is the first time for me on a Superbike here and it's the fastest track of the year so it's not that easy to learn because you need to find your braking points. At the end I was doing consistent laps and I did my best lap-time with a used tyre, so I think I can go a bit faster with a new one. I'm not that satisfied though because in many areas I need to improve my feeling on the bike and also improve my own riding. We have a bit of work to do tonight and hopefully tomorrow we can have a dry track and do a good lap-time. I think that one-and-a-half-seconds off the best time on my first visit here on a Superbike is quite good, but maybe tomorrow it could be less than a second, so I am quite happy with this."

Paul Denning - Team Manager:

"We hope that the Monza weather has done its worse and that it doesn't affect the race weekend in the same way that it did in 2012. The wet session this morning was too dangerous to ride properly, but this afternoon the track was in a good enough condition to start getting through some work on the setting, for what will hopefully be a dry race. Leon was up to fourth when he had to pit with glazed front brake pads, which is a problem we can easily solve. Jules, as ever, pushed hard to ensure he is in a solid position as we go into tomorrow.

"Our uprated specification engine, using new parts developed and just delivered by Yoshimura, is working well and by comparison to 2012, we are a lot closer to the competition in terms of outright speed. Let's hope we can get the details right and have a strong qualifying tomorrow!"

Monza - eni FIM Superbike World Championship - Qualifying 1: 1. Marco Melandri (BMW) 1'42.883: 2. Jonathan Rea (Honda) +0.274: 3. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) +0.627: 4. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) +0.638: 5. Sykes Sets A New Track Best To Win Superpole

KRT rider Tom Sykes posted a new track best at the ultra-fast Monza circuit to win his third Superpole contest in succession for the Kawasaki Racing Team. His team-mate Loris Baz was 11th.

In dry conditions Sykes and his crew got the very best out the race spec Ninja ZX-10R around the 5.777km Monza circuit, with Sykes taking a narrow but deserved Superpole win after a strong late push.

Eugene Laverty had scored a new best lap just before Tom completed his final run to pole but eventually Tom?s 1?41.223 lap time was enough to give him the honour of being fastest ever at this historic circuit. This was his 14th career Superpole win and his third in succession this season.

A wet start to the weekend robbed all the competitors of some clear track time but it proved to be dry on the second day allowing good work to be done in preparation for Superpole and for race day.

Loris Baz proved to have good race pace on race tyres in practice and had qualified eighth going into the Superpole contest. On qualifying tyres and for a single lap he could not break into a fast enough pace to challenge into the last part of Superpole and dropped to 11th on the grid.

Fabrizio Lai (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) went 14th in Superpole and Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) was 15th, meaning both riders will start from the fifth row at their home round.

Tom Sykes: ?I did not know the time Eugene had set but I knew that the Aprilias would be fast here. I am looking forward to tomorrow because we all have good race pace. In some areas we have an advantage and we got a new circuit record in Superpole, and the ideal starting position for tomorrow. I am looking forward to two exciting races. I like racing at Monza because the spectators are crazy like me! The fans are very enthusiastic and Monza is a very fast circuit. I hope to be very strong tomorrow.?

Loris Baz: ?We are not going so fast in a single lap and when you know what the problems is then OK, but right now we do not really know why. We are fighting and working hard. This morning was OK, with race tyres it was OK, but we need to make a step in qualifying to move up to the front. My regular pace is OK but we need to find some speed. We will try to find something in morning warm-up as well. We have good stability in braking and good grip but maybe manoeuvrability is the key because although the bike is working well I cannot go any faster. My top speed is not so far behind Tom, even here.?

FIXI CRESCENT SUZUKI ON MONZA THIRD ROW

FIXI Crescent Suzuki racers Jules Cluzel and Leon Camier will start side-by-side on the third row of the grid after the pair qualified for tomorrow's eni FIM Superbike World Championship races in seventh and eighth places respectively at Monza in Italy today.

The duo made their way through to Superpole on the back of yesterday's times from the first qualifying session after very heavy overnight rain left the track still damp in parts for this morning's final qualifying. In Superpole 1 the FIXI Crescent Suzuki riders comfortably progressed through to the next session as Camier logged the eighth fastest time with team-mate Cluzel in ninth. Superpole 2 saw the excitement ramp up as Cluzel blasted to the second quickest time with a lap of 1'41.936 - narrowly missing out on the previous best lap of Monza which was 1'41.745 - and recorded a top-speed of 331.4km/h down the finishing straight to secure his place in the final shoot-out, where he was joined by Camier who posted the ninth best time.

For the first time this season Cluzel and Camier lined up together in Superpole 3 on their Yoshimura-powered Suzuki GSX-Rs, with the Frenchman taking the inter-team honours by securing sixth on the grid, with his English colleague taking his place alongside him on the third-row by finishing seventh. The pair will now be looking for a good start in tomorrow's races to make sure they get away with the front group for what promises to be a fast and gruelling double-header.

Today's Superpole was held in bright sunshine with track temperatures reaching 48?C around the 5,777m Italian circuit. Tom Sykes on a Kawasaki took pole-position to record a hat-trick of Superpole victories for the season so far.
Cluzel and Camier will prepare for battle in the first of tomorrow's 18-lap races at 12.00 local time (11.00hrs BST) and then be on the grid again at 15.00hrs local time (14.00hrs BST) for race two.

Jules Cluzel:

"I am really happy because this has been the first time I have smiled on the bike this weekend! This morning was really difficult with the conditions, as yesterday was the first time on a Superbike on this really fast circuit, so I had to learn braking points and how to ride round the really fast corners that are here, which is not so easy for a rookie, and this morning we couldn't go any quicker because of the conditions. The crew have given me something good this weekend and have worked really hard to get the FIXI Crescent Suzuki set-up for this track, so I want to say a big thanks to them. This was a good thing because it made me smile and I want to do that every time I go out on the bike - this is why we race! Tomorrow will be really tough as I'm still not 100% comfortable, but I think we are finding a good direction and maybe we can improve a bit more in both races."

Leon Camier:

"It's been a frustrating day more than anything, as I never really got the best out of the qualifiers. It felt like a bit of a surprise with how much grip they had and I never quite got the benefit from it. This annoyed me more than anything, because in Superpole 3 I used a race tyre and did some fast and consistent laps, but felt like I wanted another go on a qualifier to try and get the best out of it, but it-is-what-it-is and I can't change it now! I'll try and get a good start in the races tomorrow, sit in the slip-stream to try and make sure I don't lose the tow from the guys in front and then see what happens as the races progress."

Paul Denning - Team Manager:

"I think we have to be happy with seventh and eighth in qualifying here at Monza, a circuit that the team really struggled at last year. This season's FIXI Crescent Suzuki GSX-R1000 was doing as much as 15km/h more down the straight than it was last year and that - combined with a better overall package - is allowing Jules and Leon to be a lot closer to the top Factory bikes. There is no doubt it will be a long and very tough race tomorrow, the top three or four look like they have a bit more pace than everybody else, but as ever, being there on the first lap or two, being involved and trying to get dragged along will hopefully see us in the fight!"

Monza - eni FIM Superbike World Championship - Superpole 3: 1. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) 1'41.223: 2. Eugene Laverty (Aprilia) +0.078: 3. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) +0.319: 4. Jonathan Rea (Honda) +0.575: 5. Marco Melandri (BMW) +0.596. 7. Jules Cluzel (FIXI Crescent Suzuki) +1.457. 8. Leon Camier (FIXI Crescent Suzuki) +1.585.

SHEER EXCITEMENT IN MONZA

The BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team experienced a thrilling Superpole qualifying in Monza. In a nail-biting session, both factory BMW S 1000 RR riders went through to the deciding Superpole 3 session. Local hero Marco Melandri will start the fourth round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship from fifth place on the second row of the grid. His team-mate Chaz Davies qualified ninth and will start on the third row.

While Chaz had an easy progression through the first session directly to Superpole 2, it was harder on Marco's side of the garage. An electronic issue prevented the Italian from going out on track straight away. His crew did a great job to resolve the issue within shortest amount of time and sent Marco out with five minutes to go. The Italian's time was good enough to proceed to Superpole 2. There, both riders again opted for race tyres. Marco did one outing and finished eighth, Chaz went out twice and finished seventh. With the fastest nine riders qualifying for Superpole 3, both riders reached the final session and opted for qualifying tyres. Marco did two outings and rode the fifth fastest time. Chaz went wide in the chicane, meaning his first lap time was deleted. He stayed out on track and rode more laps on the now used qualifying tyres and as a result finished ninth.

In the 2013 FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, championship leader Sylvain Barrier will start the third round of the season from pole-position. After being fastest in yesterday's first qualifying practice on his BMW HP4, the BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team rider set a clear best time again in today's final qualifying session, setting a new track record for the Superstock class. His team-mate Greg Gildenhuys improved several positions from yesterday and finished in seventh.

Marco Melandri: "I am quite happy with today's Superpole. We know that we are a little bit slower in qualifying sessions, so to start from the second row is a good result. I am really satisfied with my RR; especially with the front. We just need to work a little bit on the rear. Today we were able to work on race preparation and I am satisfied because I have a good race pace. In addition to that, the bike is more stable in race setup and also during braking. I hope that we will have good weather tomorrow. In dry conditions, I like the track, especially the 'Parabolica' which is an awesome corner. I am very confident."

Chaz Davies: "This morning, I was not really satisfied with the bike. For the afternoon we made some changes and I was much happier. On a race tyre I went 1.3 seconds faster than in the morning which was a big improvement. But I was still struggling with the balance of the bike at the corner entry, this combined with the increased grip of the qualifying tyres meant that the bike became too nervous. That was why I went wide in Superpole 3; with the qualifying tyre, the bike did not react at the corner entry as I had expected. The guys are working on solving this now and I am confident that they will find something. Tomorrow it is important to get a good start. Regarding the race pace, we are pretty competitive."

Serafino Foti (Sport Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "It was quite a positive day, despite the fact that we had some troubles. Marco had a very good session this morning, even if the lap times and positions did not change because the track was slower. In this afternoon's Superpole, Marco kept calm despite the issue and qualified for the second session after he went out with just a few minutes to go. At the end of Superpole he had finished fifth. His feeling with the bike is very good and I am confident that he will have a good race. For Chaz, his weekend started today because of his crash yesterday, so it was like he missed a day. After the accident he was a little bit nervous and in Superpole he made a mistake but he is riding well. He is improving his feeling with the bike and tomorrow, he will do well. We expect five or six riders to be competing for the victory, so it will be two challenging races.

In the Superstock class, Sylvain claimed his second pole-position of the season, setting the new track record for Superstock bikes. We need to improve a little bit in the first sector of the circuit, but tomorrow we will have the time to do so. Congratulations also to Greg. He is racing in Monza for the first time. He got a very good seventh position and can improve even more for the race. We are very confident for tomorrow."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "With Marco, we have been working during the second qualifying session this morning and the free practice session on improving the bike step by step. We were confident that if we did this then it would be possible to qualify within the first two rows. We achieved our target, even if the first Superpole session was a little thrilling due to a small technical issue. I must say thank you and well done to the crew, because they were able to fix it in time. With Chaz, after the big crash he had yesterday, we caught up most of the lost time and set the RR up for the Superpole. He also improved over the course of the day and we could see that he was pretty fast on a race tyre in Superpole 1. In the end he was not lucky but we are confident that tomorrow he will be within the top group. With both riders, we have been working more on the race set-up than on a flying lap. For sure the race will be tough because our competitors are quite strong as we can see in the first two rows. But we believe that our RR has the potential to fight with them."

FIGHTING PERFORMANCE BY CAMIER AT MONZA

FIXI Crescent Suzuki's Leon Camier rode to a determined and extremely impressive seventh place in today's second eni FIM Superbike World Championship race at Monza in Italy.

Starting from eighth on the grid, Camier held that position over the first three laps and kept in contention with the leading group. As the race wore on the Englishman pushed on through the field and was up to sixth by lap-six. He then got involved in a battle with Davide Giugliano and Michel Fabrizio over the rest of the race, before Camier crossed the finishing line seventh to confirm his comeback to fitness, equal his best result of the season so far; and move into the top-10 in the championship. Jules Cluzel had a second race to forget as he crashed on the second lap and ended his weekend early. He was mainly uninjured in the accident - he lost the nail on his little finger - but was very disappointed with the outcome of the race. The victory in the second event was taken by Eugene Laverty on an Aprilia.

Race one saw both Camier and Cluzel get solid starts and maintain positions in the top-10, before a mistake on lap five cost one of the FIXI Suzuki racers dearly. Cluzel missed his braking point going into the first chicane and went straight on and into the run off zone. He quickly re-joined the race - after losing five places - but was then further penalised with a ride-through penalty for not taking the correct line through the run-off area. Cluzel came into the pit-lane two laps later to take his penalty and re-joined the race in last place, fought to try and catch up to the closest riders but was unable to bridge the gap and had to settle for 17th position, his first non-scoring finish of the season so far.

Camier fared better than his team-mate in the first event, as he pushed hard on the demanding and fast 5,777m Italian circuit to bring his Yoshimura-powered Suzuki GSX-R home in ninth place, despite struggling with braking issues for the majority of the race. The race was won by local hero Marco Melandri, after a dramatic final few laps involving the Italian, Tom Sykes and Laverty which saw the trio swap places regularly, before Melandri came out on top with Sykes and Laverty coming home in second and third respectively.

FIXI Crescent Suzuki now heads back to the UK for its first home race of the season, as the European round of the WSBK championship with be held at Donington Park in England on Sunday May 26th.

Leon Camier:

"I had a pretty good start in the second race and got past Jules on the first lap. I then tried to get in a rhythm and not lose the tow. It took me a lap or two to get the feel and confidence in the brakes because we'd made a change to them for the second race. They felt ok, not as good in performance, but more consistent, so at least I could race with them. The set-up of the bike also worked better and let me do a bit more in the race, but I think the results today are what we can expect at this track. Yoshimura and the Crescent team have done a great job and the engine performance is in a different world to last year, but I don't think we could have done much more here."

Jules Cluzel:

"I made a mistake in the first race and had to do a ride-through. I think this was a bit harsh because I had already lost 10-seconds and so for me there was no chance of any points. In the second race we worked a lot on the bike and made some changes to help with the traction, but I lost the rear for the first time in four races and crashed. I think I made a mistake, but the bike set-up was completely new and with a different feeling because we changed quite a lot. Maybe I need to adapt more before going for fast laps, so we will need to learn from this. I got zero points this weekend, but I am already looking to get to the next race, because this one was not the best for me."

Paul Denning - Team Manager:

"First and foremost the whole team is very relieved that Jules is largely uninjured after what looked like a very nasty accident in the second race. Race-day just didn't pan out in the way we were hoping for with Jules. He had a great pace in race one before running on at the chicane, and then the ride-through destroyed any opportunity to see what he could have done. After settling in calmly on lap one of the second race, the crash put an end to his day. I have to be honest and say we are struggling between us - the team and Jules - to fully understand the best way to get him comfortable on the GSX-R for all conditions and circuits. There is still some significant work to do to find the right base, but that said, he's an inspiring racer and we're sure he'll bounce back strongly at Donington.

"For Monza I think Leon had a pretty good day! We struggled with a braking problem in the first race, but in race two the bike was a lot closer to the others. In the end we only got beaten by a factory Kawasaki, a factory BMW and the Aprilias, which on a track like this is no shame. The engine performance is night-and-day better than 2012, thanks for which I have to give to our guys at Crescent and our partners at Yoshimura Japan, who are working so hard for us. Apart from the last four or five laps - where we ran out of grip - Leon's pace was on a par with the front group. We are coming in to some tracks that will suit the bike, such as Donington and Portimao. Leon's really done well there before and we're positive of further progress towards the podium."

ONE WIN, ONE SECOND PLACE FOR MARCO MELANDRI ON THE RR IN MONZA
BACK TO LIST

The BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team is back on winning ways. Factory rider Marco Melandri rode his BMW S 1000 RR to victory in race one today and in race two, Marco was once again one of the front runners and finished second, claiming the fastest race lap. His team-mate Chaz Davies finished fifth in the first race, but crashed out of race two, once again, lying in fifth. The "Autodromo Nazionale di Monza" hosted the fourth round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship. In the Riders' Classification, Marco climbed to fourth with 96 points. Chaz is fifth with 94 points. In the Manufacturers' classification, BMW lies in second with 144 points.

Race one, which was recorded as the fastest average speed World Superbike race ever, was a breathtaking thriller from the start flag until the finish line. Marco, who started from fifth, pushed forward from the word go and took second position on lap two. Until the chequered flag, he fought an exciting battle with Eugene Laverty, Sylvain Guintoli and Tom Sykes. Positions between the four changed all the time. On lap 11, Marco took the lead but slipped back to third on lap 15. The battle continued and reached its climax on the final lap. Marco took the lead but lost it a few corners later, however he did not give up the fight. With a brilliant manoeuvre he regained first place with only a few hundred metres to go and defended his lead until the chequered flag. In a photo finish, he had an advantage of just 0.085 seconds to Sykes in second place and 0.107 seconds to Laverty in third. Chaz, who started from ninth, also gained several positions in the early stages of the race. He was involved in a battle with Jonathan Rea and Davide Giugliano and soon took fifth place, a position he successfully kept until the finish of the race.

Race two saw the same four protagonists, but this time the quartet did not change positions as much, they instead seemed to wait for the closing stages to start their final battle for victory. Marco was in third place for the majority of the race, and on the penultimate lap he started his charge forward and overtook Guintoli for second place. Laverty however defended his lead up until the finish line, winning the race with an advantage of 0.143 seconds ahead of Marco. Chaz had a more difficult race than race one. In the early stages, he again improved to fifth, but then went wide in the chicane and dropped back to eighth. The Welshman fought his way back to fifth, but a crash on lap 12 ended his hopes of another top result.

The BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team had a more than unlucky day. The race of the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup ended prematurely for both riders after Sylvain Barrier and Greg Gildenhuys were involved in a heavy crash in the first corner which involved a number of motorcycles. Both had to be taken to the Medical Centre to be assessed. Sylvain luckily escaped unhurt, Greg was suspected to have fractured his right leg, but further examinations showed that he fortunately just twisted his ankle.

Marco Melandri: "It was an unbelievable day for me. To finish first and second here in Monza is just awesome and it feels great after we had a difficult start to the season. Race one was unbelievable. I knew that my race pace was quite good, even if we struggled a bit in qualifying. When we started, I knew that it would be very tough until the last corner. When Eugene passed me on the last lap, I thought it would be impossible to pass him back again, because he was very good in the turns and he was pulling away. But in the last corner I was quite close, I knew that I could go a little bit faster than the others and so I overtook him and, even though I was a little bit wide, I kept full throttle until the finish line. Until the chequered flag, I was talking to my RR, telling her 'go, go, go' - that was incredible.

In the middle of race two I was a little bit faster than the two guys in front of me, but I could not try to pass. But when Sylvain made a little mistake, I overtook him and then tried to catch Eugene, but he was a bit too far away. Anyway, I was also very happy with second place. Now I am confident because I feel that the feeling with the bike is coming back. I can brake and go into corners aggressively, it is my riding style. I am sure that from now on we can fight with the top guys at every race. Thanks a lot to my team because they are working so hard and I am sure our championship will start now. And I also want to say 'Grazie' to the many fans who came here today. It was just awesome to see the grandstands."

Chaz Davies: "Race one was a fun race but not ideal. It was fun to battle with Jonathan and Davide, but there is no need to fight around here because the front group goes away too quickly and you lose everything, especially in the slipstream which is very important. You have to take a few tenths every lap in the slipstream. I was quite happy with my pace in the middle of the race, I could see that I was closing a little bit on the front group but in the end it was not possible to catch them. I would have liked to see how the race would have ended if I would have been able to go with them. In race two I lost time fighting with Davide again. It was fun, but it cost me half a second a lap to the top group. I thought I could close the gap and was pushing to fight for the race win and not to finish fifth. In the end I was pushing too hard and lost the front. Obviously I am disappointed to crash, but I am happy because we improved the bike step by step and were going in the right direction."

Andrea Buzzoni (General Manager BMW Motorrad WSBK): "After a dramatic weekend in Assen we came to Monza with many new ideas for Marco, ideas that have worked well since Friday. Thanks to the work the race and R&D team have done after Assen, as Marco feels comfortable and is able to show his talent. In both races he was perfect in terms of performance and race management. We're really happy he finally got back the right feeling with the bike, which allows him to go as fast as he did here in Monza. Now we have to keep up this level of performance for the future races. We have many ideas so we are really confident. I want to thank his crew for their work in Saturday's Superpole, as they did a perfect job in a short amount of time and allowed him to compete the session, so well done. Unfortunately, because of the crash on Friday, Chaz started to work on the settings later. The set-up was defined today after race one. Chaz is aware of his capability and power, and it showed in race two when he tried to close the gap to the front riders to fight for the win but unfortunately he crashed. We have to appreciate the consciousness and commitment he showed. In race one he gained a fifth place which is important for gaining points towards the championship. The championship is still long, so we have to keep working.

The Superstock race unfortunately had a dramatic start with Sylvain and Greg crashing on the first lap. Sylvain was OK, Greg had a bad impact but luckily he suffered a minor injury. We leave with empty hands but this has had no dramatic impact on the overall standings. Let's restart at the next race."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "In Monza we were finally rewarded for all the hard work we have done with Marco. We have lost races due to some unlucky situations and small technical issues. All the guys have been working very hard and it was obvious from the first practice session here in Monza that Marco was confident with his bike. It was great to see him smile again. Today's two races confirmed what we had seen since Friday and we are all happy. We must congratulate him and his crew for their work. We have seen that our RR is quite competitive on this track, even if, as we expected, our competitors are very strong. For Chaz, it was not an easy weekend. He had a crash on Friday but then working with his crew he improved his feeling for the bike step by step. Even if his starting position was not the best, he was catching up, especially in race two. In the middle of the race he was really fast but unfortunately he hit the bumps with the front and lost the opportunity to fight with the top group. But he proved that he was going at a good speed. So again, a big thank you to all the guys."

Sykes Takes Two Podiums And The Lap Record At Monza

KRT rider Tom Sykes left the Monza race weekend with a second and a third place finish, new track and race lap records and third place in the championship after two blistering displays of fast riding.

Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) could not find his ideal set-up in the races and finished with two strong top ten finishes, so he is still sixth place in the overall standings.

Sykes was so close to the win in the first race that the gap at the flag was only 0.085 seconds and he was delighted to be able to race hard right to the end on his Ninja ZX-10R. A last lap manoeuvre on an inside line at the classic Parabolica final corner took him past Eugene Laverty but not quite to the win itself.

In race two he had to fight hard all the way and scored a third place, only 0.725 seconds from the win. Tom?s new lap record is 1?42.229 seconds, set on lap five in the first race. In the championship Tom is third, on 119 points, 18 points off the lead.

Baz was seventh in race one, improving on his qualifying position of 11th, as he gathered more important points. In race two he had to start from the very back after he stalled his machine on the line but battled through to finish eighth.

Fabrizio Lai (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) and Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) each scored points in race one, Lai for 13th and Sandi for 15th.

The Superstock 1000 FIM Cup race delivered a 1-2 for Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R riders, with Lorenzo Savadori (Team Pedercini Kawasaki) winning by 0.402 seconds from Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki). No fewer than six of the bikes in the top nine places were Kawasakis. Guarnoni is fourth overall in the championship, only eight points from the leader.

Tom Sykes: ?Today I put it all out there for everybody to see. I could not give any more. Race one was a great race, a great battle although I was like a sitting duck at the back for a time. I was waiting to see where those guys were strong, and they have some speed, so I used that to my advantage and it led to a very exciting last lap. I tried to lead after lap 15 and pull a gap but it was not to be, because they reeled me straight back in. The last lap was great, it was almost a third to first run from the last corner, but I did not want to do anything stupid, so to have the Kawasaki working like that here makes me very motivated. Monza was going to be one of the most challenging circuits we would visit this season but we have come away with pole position, a new circuit record, a lap record and two podiums, so I am happy!?

Loris Baz: ?We knew it was going to be a hard raceday for us but in race two we understood a lot and I think we know which direction we have to go at this track. I am confident for the next races and on from here with sixth place in the championship. The bike stalled on the grid when I put it through first gear so I think I did not give enough gas, so I had to start from pitlane, I think I could have been sixth maybe in that race and not eighth, as I was not pushing at the end. Some other riders did not score.?
