Video: 2014 SBK Round 9 Preview - Laguna Seca, USA

Mazda Raceway / Laguna Seca has become a favourite venue for the KRT riders and team thanks to a growing Kawasaki fan base in America. Fast with many ?one line only? sections to the track - plus the famous Corkscrew turn - it?s going to test Tom, Loris and David?s race craft to the limit.

Pata Honda aims high in USA

After racing last weekend at Portimao in Portugal, the Pata Honda World Superbike pairing of Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam heads directly to Laguna Seca in the US for next weekend?s (11-13 July) ninth-round races before going into an eight-week summer recess.

The World Superbike championship returned to the 3.610km Californian circuit last season for the first time since 2004, with this year?s visit marking the tenth anniversary of Chris Vermeulen?s double victory on his Ten Kate Racing Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade.

However, Jonathan Rea missed the return visit in 2013 as he recuperated from a broken femur sustained at the Nurburgring in Germany. Coming directly from his race two win in Portimao last Sunday, this will be the first time the 27-year-old from Northern Ireland has taken the current World Superbike specification Fireblade on to the undulating Laguna track.

Haslam showed the potential of the Pata Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP during Superpole at Laguna Seca in 2013, but the British rider, 31, was unable to translate that into two good results in the races that straddled last year?s race weekend ? race one on Saturday with the second outing on Sunday.

Jonathan Rea

I?m really looking forward to heading to circuit where I?ve not raced before. I think Laguna is going to be really exhilarating on the Pata Honda CBR and it?s no surprise that, with the infamous Corkscrew, it?s one of the most iconic circuits on the SBK calendar. I hope quickly to get over the disadvantage of having missed the race there last year through injury. Of course, we?re going there on the back of a win at Portimao which was really good for the morale of the team and it?s important that we try to carry that momentum into the summer break which comes after this weekend.

Leon Haslam

I enjoyed riding at Laguna last year and, although the race results weren?t so great, we did have one session when everything worked and came together OK in which we were quite competitive. I was happy with the progress that we made with different engine specification and chassis settings over the weekend in Portimao and I think that, when it?s dialled in, the CBR will really suit the special characteristics of Laguna Seca. So I?m looking forward to the weekend and to continuing the progress we?ve made.

Pieter Breddels - technical co-cordinator

It will be Leon?s second visit to Laguna with us and, although the races didn?t go to plan last year, he was able to show good potential over the weekend. I really hope we can continue with the good progress that we made with him last weekend in Portimao. Jonathan, of course, has not raced at Laguna because he had to miss last year?s race through injury. However, the circuit certainly has some elements that I think will suit him and his CBR. He?s a fast learner and we found a good new setting for him last weekend so I?m sure he?ll be looking to carry on where he left off in Portugal.

This year?s schedule reverts to a slightly revised but still more traditional raceday format, as follows:

Laguna Seca World Superbike schedule (local times ? GMT -7hrs):

Friday 11 July

10.30-11.15 - Free Practice 1

14.00-14.45 - Free Practice 2

16.45-17.30 - Free Practice 3

Saturday 12 July

10.00-10.30 - Free Practice 4

13.00-13.15 - Superpole 1

13.25-13.40 - Superpole 2

Sunday 13 July

09.00-09.15 - Warm-up

11.00 - Race 1 (25 laps, 90.250km)

14.45 - Race 2 (25 laps, 90.250km)

American Round Eagerly Anticipated By KRT Riders
The ninth round of the FIM Superbike World Championship, at Laguna Seca in the USA, will take place just a few short days after the previous round in Portugal and all three official KRT riders are keen to get back into action again.

KRT SBK riders Tom Sykes and Loris Baz were each on the podium in race one at Portimao a couple of days ago before rain arrived for race two. Each official full SBK rider for KRT is focused to complete the American race in the best way possible and enter the subsequent summer break on a high note.

The same positive attitude is true of KRT SBK Evo rider David Salom, who will be out to add to his championship lead in the class-within-a-class Evo category at the naturally undulating circuit in California.

For Sykes the 2014 season took another step forward at Portimao, with his seventh win of the year in race one, and he will be out to try and replicate his 2013 season opening race winning performance at Laguna this weekend. Sykes is 43 points ahead on the eve of the ninth round of the year and intends to leave America with an even greater advantage by aiming for more race wins.

Sykes, the 2013 World Champion with Kawasaki, reached the milestone of 21 career race victories last time out and at Laguna he should reach another landmark in his career. After he begins race one in America he will have made 150 race starts in his SBK career. His statistics are already truly world class, with 44 career podiums including his 21 wins, 33 front row starts including 22 pole positions, and 21 fastest laps in races. His race victories have been recorded at 11 different circuits, with his first ever SBK win taking place at the German round in 2011.

Talented French rider Baz, still only 21-years old, has already won two SBK races with Kawasaki in his relatively short SBK career. He is still waiting for his first win of this season, however, despite some strong rides and taking eight podium finishes so far - the most recent a third place in race one at Portimao.

Baz is locked in a thrilling battle for overall second position right now, and is only five points from the rider above him, with another rider just one point behind him. Loris has never ridden at Laguna Seca after missing the race in 2013 through injury, but he is fully aware of the track?s legendary status and anticipates his first visit there as eagerly as any venue he has ever raced at.

In a strange quirk of fate Baz?s bad luck at not being able to race at Laguna Seca last year provided the opportunity for current KRT SBK Evo riders David Salom to take the weekend off from his regular WSS duties and compete for the full KRT Superbike squad. He finished 11th and ninth last year in America, which were more than respectable results on his first visit there.

In 2014 David is racing in SBK full time but on the official KRT Evo machine and he is currently the top Evo rider. He aims to be the Evo race winner ? as he has been on many occasions this year ? when it gets to raceday in America.

Laguna Seca was once a fixture on the SBK calendar, right up until 2004, which made its return to the class last year a highly popular reunion. At 3.610km long the Laguna circuit features many rises and dips, with the most famous sector being The Corkscrew. After a blind approach and entry the riders have to make a sharp left, which quickly becomes a drop down a steep gradient and then they have to make an almost immediate flick to the right to get around the final part of this unique chicane.

After Laguna the next race on the calendar is not until September 7th, and this will take place at Jerez in Spain.

Tom Sykes: ?We had some success last year at Laguna. It was my first time there and we won race one but we had some issues in race two. These have been addressed since then, so I am very excited to be going back. I enjoy America, the way of life over there, the great circuit at Laguna, and I cannot wait to get going again. There will be no change of strategy and I hope we will be blessed with some sunshine. I am already looking forward to getting going there.?

Loris Baz: ?We have America next, just a few days after Portimao. It is going to be cool because it is the first time I have been to Laguna Seca and I cannot wait to see the track. I know it is amazing already. I have to learn the layout but I sure it will not be a big problem. I am sure we are going to make something good there because it seems more or less like Portimao, up and down, and we have found some positive things for this kind of track. I am sure I am going to like Laguna Seca.

David Salom: ?Laguna next and for me it is a very good track. I rode there last year with the KRT team in Superbike, as a substitute rider for Loris, and I finished very well. I like the track layout, the whole circuit itself, and I think it will be possible to fight for the Evo wins again.

VOLTCOM CRESCENT SUZUKI SET FOR LAGUNA SECA

With two eni FIM Superbike World Championship race weekend?s back-to-back Voltcom Crescent Suzuki has travelled directly across the Atlantic from Portugal this week in preparation for the GEICO Motorcycle US round at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California.

The second appearance on the WSBK calendar for the Monterey circuit in recent years - 2013 saw the race action spilt across two days with Eugene Laverty taking a last-lap podium place in Saturday?s race one and a hard-fought race win for the Sunday outing - this year?s action follows the standard schedule of two races on Sunday.

Laverty is keen to get back to a track he believes his Suzuki GSX-R1000 can perform well at and is hoping to retrace his podium steps ahead of the eight-week summer break.

While Laguna Seca may be another new circuit for Alex Lowes, it is one the Championship rookie has wanted to get to grips with for a long time. After coming close to a podium result last time out at Portimao, Lowes is looking forward to putting his Yoshimura-powered GSX-R1000 through its paces around such an iconic track and has high hopes come race day.

Constructed in 1957 at a cost of 1.5 million dollars of locally-sourced money, the 3,610m, 11-corner circuit has a long history with motor racing but the track?s major talking point is The Corkscrew. Falling just over 33 meters between turns 8 and 9, with an 18% drop at the sharp right-hander of 8a, the left-right formation provides breath-taking racing and remains a feature that all racers want to experience.

Today (Friday) sees Voltcom Crescent Suzuki take to the track for all three timed-for-qualifying free practice sessions at the American circuit, with the opening action commencing at 10:30hrs local time (18:30BST). Saturday?s Superpole qualifying takes place at 13:00hrs local time (21:00BST) with Sunday?s races at 11:00hrs (19:00BST) and 14:45hrs (22:45BST) respectively.

Eugene Laverty:

?Much like Portimao I?ve been looking forward to Laguna Seca because I know that the GSX-R should work well round there. The Suzuki showed very good potential last year so we will try our best and it would be nice to get some podiums before the long summer break. It?s been a difficult run lately but I will give it my all to try and get back up there!?

Alex Lowes:

?I can?t wait to get on track at Laguna this weekend. It has always been a dream of mine to ride there and to experience the Corkscrew. It?s another new track for me but the circuit should suit our bike well so I am really looking forward to getting down to work and pushing to run with the front guys on Sunday.?

Rea and Haslam in Laguna mix

Pata Honda riders Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam finished in seventh and eighth places overall respectively after today?s three Free Practice sessions at Laguna Seca in round nine of the 2014 World Superbike championship.

For Rea, who missed last year's races through injury, it was a new circuit to tackle on his Pata Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP but the 27-year-old took to the 3.610km track instantly, finishing his opening session in fifth place and ending the day just 0.3s from the provisional pole position time of fellow Brit, Chaz Davies.
Haslam, too, was in good form today, a further three-tenths back from his team-mate but generally with more positive progress than on his last visit to Laguna Seca with the team last September.

With weather conditions changing through the day - starting with cloud and drizzle and ending in bright sunshine - today?s three session were all timed for tomorrow afternoon?s Superpole. This will determine final grid positions for Sunday?s two 25-lap races at Laguna Seca, with both Pata Honda riders progressing automatically to Superpole 2 tomorrow thanks to their top ten results today.

Jonathan Rea - P7, 1m23.638s

I really enjoyed riding today ? it?s an amazing track and, to be honest, the Corkscrew is quite intimidating! I think I?ve got it right about three times in all my laps today! The good thing is that my guys are making really good progress with the bike. All day we?ve chipped away and done a lot of work on used rubber. According to the data, it seems that the drop in lap times from new to old isn?t as harsh as last year. Tomorrow we need to make a really good Superpole because this is a difficult place to pass but, we?ll keep that in mind as we set up the bike and try to make it one that we can make some passes with. As I said, I?m really enjoying riding here and although the position isn?t that great, the gap to the front is not too big, so I?m looking forward to maki ng more progress tomorrow.

Leon Haslam - P8, 1m23.922s

I?m feeling pretty good, really, and we?ve made some progress with the chassis. We made a change right at the end on a new tyre and it wasn?t quite the right direction so for tomorrow we?ll come back to where we were. But we?re not a million miles away, we?re pretty consistent and I?m happy with the progress we?ve made so far. I?m fitter this year and the package is a lot more consistent, too, even though we?re still suffering in a few areas. But this place is all about riding the track and attacking it with a bike that allows you to do that. I think that, with all that in mind, we?re making the right steps.

Pieter Breddels - technical co-ordinator

Jonathan?s time of 1m23.6 is just a little bit from the front so, for his first time racing here, he?s had a really good day. There are still some things to try with the chassis and some electronics settings like engine brake and on-power to adjust but overall it?s quite positive. Leon did a 23.9 and this is also quite good. We see on the data some problems in the second corner so we need to improve that and there?s room for improvement in other sectors, too. But he?s quite a bit faster than he was last year and he?s quite close to the front so not a bad day for the team.

LOWES & LAVERTY ON LAGUNA SECA PACE

In a solid opening day?s work for the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki team, Alex Lowes set a flying last lap in the third eni FIM Superbike World Championship free practice at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to claim fifth position and secure his place in Superpole 2.

The British rider had spent the majority of Friday?s action learning the American circuit on his Yoshimura-powered GSX-R before setting a 1'23.573 in the dying minutes of the final practice. Despite missing a considerable part of the early afternoon session due to technical issues, Lowes is confident he can continue to learn more about the Laguna track and build on his impressive form as the weekend progresses.

Eugene Laverty got up to speed on his Suzuki GSX-R and maintained a consistently strong pace throughout the demanding three-session schedule. The Irishman is confident of his race ability come Sunday, but will look to further improve his one-lap performance in the final free practice session ahead of the all-important Superpole qualifier.

Unexpectedly British conditions greeted the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki team for the opening day of World Superbike action at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca as Lowes and Laverty got to grips with their respective GSX-R1000?s under grey and cloudy skies. As the Californian sun finally made itself known the temperatures rose for the afternoon sessions, rising from 18?C to 23?C and warming the track to a high of 43?C.

Ex-AMA rider Chaz Davies took the fastest time of the day with a 1?23.293 early in the third stint, while his EVO counterpart Niccol? Canepa set the benchmark for the class on his Althea Ducati.

With only the final non-timed free practice session scheduled, Voltcom Crescent Suzuki will be back in action at the Laguna Seca circuit at 10:00hrs local time (18:00BST) ahead of the afternoon?s Superpole qualifying commencing at 13:00hrs local time (21:00BST).

Alex Lowes:

?It was a really difficult day being my first time here so there was a lot to learn. We had some problems in the middle session which affected my confidence but we bounced back well in the last session. We?ve made some changes to the bike and I started to enjoy it so hopefully there is plenty to improve on for tomorrow. We still need to make a few steps but I?m looking forward to it.?

Eugene Laverty:

?We worked really well today! I think with the summer break looming we know we need to get a good result here. We?ve made some good steps with the GSX-R today and race pace is good. We still have a performance issue on a new tyre but for our race pace on the tyre we were really strong. I?m confident for the race but our focus is improving that rear setting to allow me to use the new tyre in Superpole. Last time out we should have been there fighting at the front but a bad Superpole cost us, so that is the key for tomorrow morning.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?A great performance by riders and the crew today; it?s been a tough schedule with three free practice sessions but the bikes have run strongly and we have improved the level step-by-step over the course of the day. Alex has done an incredible job to be fifth and the fastest of the Laguna rookies. It?s a great result, particularly after we had some problems in free practice two that had slowed down the progress a little bit.

?Eugene - or as they prefer to call him around these parts, the Toomebridge Tornado - has been really consistent all day and a 1?23.8 on tyres that had done 25 laps in FP3 gives us a lot of encouragement for the race. One free practice session in the morning and then Superpole and it?s just everything crossed that both riders can keep the momentum going towards Superpole and that we can qualify well, which will be critical in terms of a decent race result.?

Laguna Seca ? eni FIM Superbike World Championship ? Free Practice Combined Times: 1. Chaz Davies (Ducati) 1?23.293: 2. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) +0.021: 3. Marco Melandri (Aprilia) +0.104: 4. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) +0.169: 5. Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) +0.280: 6. Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) +0.336.

Rea third in standings after Laguna podium

Pata Honda rider Jonathan Rea took his Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP to third place in a truncated race two at round nine of the 2014 World Superbike Championship at Laguna Seca in the USA this afternoon. The two races were won by Marco Melandri and Tom Sykes with Rea’s Pata Honda team-mate Leon Haslam scoring two seventh place finishes.

Starting from tenth place on the grid after his Superpole crash yesterday, Rea got a good start to the first 25-lap race around the 3.610km Californian circuit. However, while running in fifth place, the 27-year-old ran wide at turn three and dropped to tenth before fighting his way back to sixth place at the flag.

Race two was red-flagged after nine laps with Rea holding seventh place but a second red flag was shown immediately after the restart. Lining up seventh on the re-formed grid for a seven-lap sprint, he got another good start and a bold move past Toni Elias in turn 10 secured his 40th World Superbike podium.

Haslam had matched his team-mate’s pace for most of the Laguna Seca weekend but front grip issues restricted progress for the 31-year-old in the first race, in which he finished three seconds behind Rea. The grip issue transferred to the rear of Haslam’s bike in race two and he was forced to settle for another seventh place finish.

Next week, both Pata Honda riders will fly to Japan to join other Honda CBR1000RR-powered teams in the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hours race on 27 July before an extended summer break, with the World Superbike Championship re-grouping for round ten at Jerez in Spain on 5-7 September.

Jonathan Rea - 6th and 3rd

I feel we should have been stronger in race one today, but that was a knock-on effect of my mistake yesterday in Superpole. But the red flags definitely helped me in race two by improving my grid position but they gave me a bike today that was pretty good. In the second part of the race, I felt like I had a bike that could compete right at the front had I been there from the first lap. Unfortunately, Laguna is really hard to pass at so I had to make some bold manoeuvres but I enjoyed it! It’s how I like to ride and I’m excited to leave here with a podium, which almost feels better than my race win last week in Portugal. I’m excited to go into the summer break and come back strong for the last part of the year.

Leon Haslam - 7th and 7th

In race one I felt pretty good – I got a good start but really struggled with front grip from lap one. I was hanging in there for a top five finish but in the last six or seven laps my pace dropped off quite a lot as I was really struggling with the front grip. In race two we didn’t change anything but the front grip came back and it was really good, but we struggled more with rear grip. On the three starts in race two the grip got worse and worse and I was over a second slower than I had been on a 20-lap tyre yesterday. We need to analyse why because the bike was the same and the boys have worked really well this weekend and we’ve been making good progress, especially on old tyres. To be that slow on new tyres in those re-starts was not what we wanted.

Pieter Breddels - technical co-ordinator

Leon had a good start in race one and was doing OK but the front grip went and he couldn’t do the lap times any more. Race two was a bit hectic but he had no rear grip and was a long way off his lap times from the weekend. We’re just investigating whether it was something with the tyre because all weekend he was matching Jonathan’s times, which was encouraging. Jonathan also had a good start to race one but in his eagerness to catch the front runners he ran off the track at turn three and rejoined back in tenth place. He got back to sixth but was very close to the guys in fourth and fifth. The red flags in race two led to a seven-lap sprint but he got another really good start and then passed Elias with a nice move for third. We’re really happy with that and we’re third in the championship a nd still in touch with second. That’s a good way to go into the summer break.

AVERTY 4TH AT DRAMA-PACKED LAGUNA SECA

Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s Eugene Laverty finished fourth in a dramatic sprint race climax to the eni FIM Superbike World Championship weekend at Laguna Seca in America.

After a strong battle to fourth in the opening stint of the day’s second race, two red flags saw Laverty resigned to a seven lap sprint race aboard his Yoshimura-powered GSX-R. A difficult start dropped the Irishman to seventh at the first turn but Laverty dug deep to regain his earlier position, moving through the front pack in the opening three laps before retaking fourth on the penultimate lap to claim 13 points.

Starting strongly in the first race - running sixth and battling for fourth – Laverty suffered a technical issue resulting in a trip through the gravel at turn two on lap eight and an eventual early retirement five corners later.

After a tough start to the day, Alex Lowes rode to a brilliant eighth position in race one - having suffered a big accident in warm-up. His Voltcom Crescent Suzuki team worked tirelessly to build a new GSX-R in the hour-break before the commencement of the opening contest, and the British racer repaid the effort by jumping three places from his starting position to bring home eight points.

Race two saw Lowes holding 10th for the opening 10 laps and looking to progress to the top six, before a crash at The Corkscrew brought out a red flag and the end to his weekend.

A bright and blustery day saw the California track bathed in 21°C sunshine for the opening action, as Aprilia’s Marco Melandri saw off his team-mate for the victory. Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes eventually took the win in the second outing.

Voltcom Crescent Suzuki now looks to enjoy the long summer break while returning to its UK headquarters in preparation for the first of the four remaining rounds, as the World Championship returns to Jerez, in Spain, on Sunday September 7th.

Eugene Laverty:

“We have put in a lot of good work all weekend but race one was over before it started; we had a technical problem and managed a few laps hanging in there but the bike was on its way out, so on lap eight it was done. In race two I managed to hang in with the front guys even when our bike isn’t as strong with a full fuel tank and new tyres. Then the GSX-R started to feel really good and I knew I could come towards them but the red flag came out. The restarted seven lap sprints don’t really suit us as we are always better at the end of the races. We as a team had the potential for podiums today, the guys worked so hard this weekend so we all deserved it before the summer break - fourth was not really the reward we were looking for.”

Alex Lowes:

“It’s been a difficult, painful day and I’m disappointed with its conclusion. I got a good feeling and understanding with the GSX-R today and my team has done a great job this weekend so it’s a shame we couldn’t come away with more. I’m looking forward to the summer break; it will give me the time to recover and continue my training so we can come back strong and ready to fight in Jerez.”
