having watched Watchdog last night it seems BMW diesel cars go like a bomb literally, there's a problem with them catching fire :kitt-kit:

Another taste of the future.........there is a camera on the driver to monitor for signs of tiredness...and sounds an alarm if it is detected.

That's a Numpty Detector. A bit noisy, was it...? :D

That’s hardly new technology. My 2012 C Class coupé had something along those lines. I don’t think it was a camera but it monitored the way the car was driven and if the driver got sloppy (e.g. wandering in the lane), it would start sounding alarms and a coffee mug symbol would flash up on the dash.

My first thought was- it would be better to monitor brain activity.
But then I realised that would be a contradiction.

Lane changing technology has been around for ages, this thing monitors what the driver is doing, not the car.

Interesting to see how a camera can detect if one is tired.

My understanding is that it does two things:

- locks on to your eyes and measures blink rates and duration
- also, it detects a downward movement of the head such as when dozing off

Warning is an audible alarm and juddering steering wheel.

A lot of people dismiss this stuff as gimmicks but having used the technology for a week I can see where it is going.

Safer roads for all(y)

Well blow me down with a feather.....just watched The Cockfields (well worth watching if you like gentle comedy) and blow me down again Nigel Havers was driving the BMW I had as a courtesy car.

The programme was based on The Isle of Wight and that tripped the connection in my mind.

Blow me down with a feather.

Maybe they could adapt this technology to catch out mobile phone users and link it to a retractable spike in the seat. (y)

The other day you were banging on about getting a Bentley??
I’d like a Bentayga, but it won’t happen. Then when I was in Milan a couple of weeks ago I had a good long look around a huge motorhome store for inspiration. We came away deciding that what we have already suits our needs and the slight niggles we have with it can be worked around. I’ve just been around it with a fine tooth comb sorting out some of them already. Additionally its now got new discs and pads front and rear, I've fitted modified rear spring shackle bushes and done an engine service. Then replaced one of the faulty rear cameras.

I’m going to buy another house and then rent it out, better to have money in something that should appreciate, unlike 4 wheels which will depreciate.

actually, my VW Tiguan I had 18 months ago had active cruise control that would bring the car to a standstill and move off again according to traffic situations. It also had active steering that read the road lines and would also self steer within painted lines.

Am I the only one who thinks the more tech these cars get & the more people come to rely on it the more driving standards go down ?

Yup.

:D

I do take your point though.

However, anything that makes driving safer regardless of the standard of driving must be a good thing? ........for instance Stopping the car changing lanes on a motorway if there is something in the 'blind spot' - how many drivers (other than me:p) bother doing a proper lane check but just rely on their mirrors? The 8 Series I had would actually slam the brakes on if you are going to hit a parked car (or anything else for the matter, including bony fleshy things) as standard.

All this stuff will inevitably filter down the price range and, let's face it, are all baby steps toward fully automated driving.

It all gets my vote.

My 760L had all this, it was boring. My 107 that PooPlow wants to buy doesn’t. It’s still boring. Bit like your posts really.

Buffoon.
