Try owning an RX8..... It's the Oliver Reed of the petrol world.
That was the other car on my short list at the time. Loved the engine but the truth is there ain't no substitute for cubes. Big V6 every time for me.

Well, 1300cc has it's limits... There's a few RX8 drag cars making north of 1600bhp. They're all triple rotor, triple turbo'd engines though. Hard to get that through emissions on the MOT...!

ianrobbo1

good looking AND modest
So Andrew has a "new" second-hand car, o_O someone else's hand me down, a few bob saved on new with the ludicrous resale persentage drop from just driving it off the forecourt, but still just a mass-produced tin box.:D

Arguably the RX8 is 3900cc...which explains the colossal fuel appetite!!

Only if you use this definition - "Engine displacement is the swept volume of all the pistons inside the cylinders of a reciprocating engine in a single movement from top dead centre to bottom dead centre" - but as the rotary engine has no pistons your argument is invalid. ;)

Mind you, if it produced the torque of a 3.9L twin then I'd be very happy. Although a 3.9L twin revving to 9,500rpm could be a bit hairy. :D

Insurance companies class it as 2600cc. No idea why.....

Is it only me, but I don’t really like cars, they’re just 4 wheeled boxes to get me from a to b. I just can’t get excited about them. Bikes and Motorhomes

Ok, time to come clean...although if anyone actually believed I would spend £90k on a car (I never said I did by the way...assumptions...) then they need to have a long hard look at themselves :p

I have it for a week as a courtesy vehicle. One of the better emails I have had in my life asked 'do you want an 8 Series or an i80'. :) I went for the 8 Series as you can't get a set of golf clubs in the i8.

For those that bang on about how awful bmw drivers are read on for some great news.(y)

So, what is it like? I have to say it is awesome to drive but it is massively compromised - the rear seats are useless unless the front occupants are under 5'6". Surprisingly the boot space isn't too bad with the roof up but the only way to get a set of golf clubs in is to remove the airscreen (no small task) ,put the back seats down and put the bag in in lengthwise...even then I had to take the longer clubs out.

But as a two seater it is awesome. 531bhp is certainly entertaining, and I haven't really hammered it. I will even say that the 4.8 litre DIESEL is a fabulous motor. It even sounds ok from inside. Happily it shuts down at standstill. But if I were spending £90k on a car I would expect to hear it purring like a kitten from the outside. It doesn't.

Someone mentioned the 'harsh ride'. My saloon is certainly plusher over the road, but the 8 is just fine for what it is - a low slung high performance sports car. I can only imagine that journalists who criticised did the macho man thing and firmed the suspension up when using it on the road. In the real world the Comfort setting gives a nice ride, even on the convertible. It firms up significantly in Sport setting...which is what it is supposed to do.

The real eye opener is the technology. I have driven a couple of cars with radar controlled cruise control but this is something else. Even in traffic it looks after itself, bringing the car to a safe stop and then starting to move again with no driver input. The steering corrects itself if it detects you are crossing a centre line or getting too close to a kerb.....if you are brave enough I understand it will actually steer itself between kerb and centre line with no driver input, even on twisty roads.

Best of all, if you go to change lane on a motorway WITHOUT INDICATING the steering will significantly increase resistance meaning you have to force it to change direction, and indeed won't even let you if the car senses there is an obstruction in the lane you are joining whether you have indicated or not. A whole industry of BMW/indicator jokes will soon be a thing of the past.

The heads up display is brilliant, hopefully will be standard on all cars in time. Same applies to the various parking aids.

Comfort is superb once you have adjusted the seats to suit, and the air conditioned ventilation in the seats is rather nice.

Would I buy one ?? No, lack of rear seat and boot space puts me right off as I only need and want one car. However, if I was in the market for a £90k two seat tourer then I would certainly have it on the short list. Particularly the coupe as I have never felt the need for a convertible.

For what it's worth, I am undecided on the colour - it has grown on me but I wouldn't buy one in that colour. Tanzanite Blue with a light cream interior for me.

You will all be delighted to hear that a young lady in her clapped out Peugeot shouted 'knobhead' at me when I was filling it up.

You are welcome.

Even if you don't give a shit.:p

You should've taken the i8. It would've been worth it for the entertainment value for the sake of a week without golf.

OK, basically....
Beaker loves Diesel.
And, thankfully, BMW are at last taking away the act of driving a car from people who buy BMW's but can't actually drive.

Damn. I’m too late for this one but I’ve been way too busy to be on here.
Aside from that, the car is gay. Fact.

Sorry to say this Beaks, old chap, but the view from your lounge is atrocious. Your fence is shameful; your grass needs petrol pouring on it and setting fire to; trim your bushes; and, I’d grab a few of those steak and kidney lock openers that haunt your town to stick some tarmac on your drive. And have your butler flatten those council houses. Immediately!

if you think I would be daft enough to post a picture taken outside my house on here you must be as mad as a sack of frogs!!

As it happens I 'may' be owner of the land in the picture at some point unless a developer comes in with a ridiculous bid. Which they normally do every time I find something interesting.

I am surprised that you didn't pick up on the fact that I was complimentary about the diesel in this car. The performance is staggering and over 40 mpg since I have had it...albeit I haven't really pushed it in that time.

Well, maybe once.

Or twice.

Another taste of the future.........there is a camera on the driver to monitor for signs of tiredness...and sounds an alarm if it is detected.
