Worth taking a chance

Hi Guys
I’ve found a bird for sale privately in my area, a 99 FI with 57k on it some some surface scratches no history, is it worth a chance at £1600?

Mileage wouldn’t bother me providing it had some form of history. Their version of light scratches and yours will no doubt differ. Worst era for the loom fix if it’s not been done. Plenty about ......

As Me! says, mileage isn't important. Condition of the bike is. Service history is a bit of a double edged sword. Many on here wouldn't let their Birds anywhere near a Honda stealership.

What mods have been done to it..?

Given the mileage, a sympathetic Bird owner would usually have fitted some (or even all) of these by now:

Better fork springs
Replacement or refurbed shock
Gel seat
Lowered pegs
Bar risers
Taller screen
Mirror arm extenders.

Ask whether they've replaced the CCT and the Regrec and as Me! mentioned, have they done the loom fix.

from the pics it’s had a seat upgrade & a raised screen, can’t see if it’s got risers or lowered pegs,
The guy knows nothing about it, not had it long, & has now got a newer one,
Not feeling good about that, but may take a look as it’s local

Is there anyway I can tell if the loom has been done?
Take a look at the thread at the top of the Help section - there are photos.

As above, mileage isn't as important as condition. At that age is is bound to have scratches and dings.

Nice to see a Bird being priced realistically and on the face of it a bargain especially if you get a couple of hundred quid off the advertised price.

Don't underestimate the cost of consumables though - new tyres and brake pads don't come cheap so have a good look at them. Ditto chain and sprockets. What may start as a bargain could quickly become a money pit.

Yup, and all for less than the price of a couple of pints. Good luck, I hope you find what you're looking for.

Where the feck do you drink...Wetherspoons..?! Here on the sunny sarf coast, the cost of BIRD membership = a pint and a bag of crisps in a reasonable pub.

Only by feeling the loom.
Feel under the seat cowl on the left hand side up near the battery.
If the lump you feel is fairly square/oblong, it has not been done. If the lump is more of a round blob it is proly done..
Done or not, it is worth a check with a new purchase.
As for service history, the only birds With issues I have ever had pass through my hands are the bikes with main dealer service stamps..
The best bikes have always been serviced by the owners

I don’t drink very much at all, usually only when on holiday. I’m on 24 hour call (and I’m up at 0515 on school days for the gym), so drinking isn’t really a good idea. I’m not a huge fan of alcohol anyway so I’m not missing anything.
