WiFi hotspot dongles?

My daughter is living in Canada at the moment, but comes back about twice a year to visit.
Her phone data plan ( Canadian) costs her a fortune over here. She doesn't want to lug two phones about or keep swapping sim cards.
So.. I thought about one of those WiFi hotspot things. Get a 4g one, a Payg data sim card, and she can use it over her for whatsapp and social media contact. Save her a fortune.
Has anyone used one, what's the speed like, any recommendations as to make, or Payg sim?
So far I have seen a Huawei E5573 dongle, and a '3' 12gig 12 month data sim that can be used in loads of countries. Don't want a contract one as its only going to be used about the equivalent of three months a year.
    Help please...

The Mifi - I think as long as its 4g then there's not much in them, I personally have a TP-Link one.
Data SIM - I get mine off Fleabay. search data only on 3. . My last one was 20gb data over 12 month for about £30.

Thanks John. Yep. Looks like 3 is the best. On the high St all the big names swore blind that you can't get sim only Payg deals.
Boy are they desperate to get a contract out of you!

I bought a Vodafone pyg from Argos a quite few years back and it worked well.

    Expensive though.

Another option - does she really need 24/7 wifi coverage? There are so many places that provide free wifi now (even our local buses) that she could get the access she needs rather than what she wants?

No, she doesn't need .24 /7 coverage, but it's really handy to use if she's trying to call over WhatsApp in the uk instead of using her very very expensive data from her Canadian supplier. Gone for a dongle with an O2 data SIM..
She uses free WiFi when she can, but then tags onto the dongle wherever it's needed.
Seems to be working well in most countries she's visited so far!

    Our recent USA trip
I used a 3 SIM card in my phone (instead of my usual O2 sim)
One month 12Gig data plus calls and texts to the U.K. for £20 (I think)
    O2 wanted up to £5 a day !!!
Used the phone for sat nav, Googling info, Uber, calls and texts ..... still had plenty of remaining data minutes texts etc etc

There must be something similar for visiting U.K. ???

Look forward to the EU wide free roaming currently being enjoyed by all being removed post Brexit.......

Yes there is something similar, but she wants her number alwYs available. Typical woman.
20gig 3SIM with a mifi dongle. And she then keeps her Canadian SIM in the phone, but uses the dongle to do all the WhatsApp calls free, And mapping. It's also usable when we go thers, and if they go away on holiday.
