Travelling on the M1 this morning commuting to work, I got into lane 1 ready to exit at the slip road, just before I got to the slip road for a few yards it felt like I was riding on the edge of the tyre even though I was upright, this is the first time I have experienced this even though I travel this route nearly every day, there didn't appear to be any debris on the motorway, maybe I was a little further over than I normally would be at this point :dunno: , just felt strange. no problems or weird sensations on the journey home.

if u caught the edge of the rut left by the hgvs running in lane 1 then this might explain it, cos if deep enuff, the rutt top would be on the edge of your tyre,

mmmmmmm doesnt look right, but i think u should understand

Cheers Chuff, I believe you could have hit the nail on the head  there are always loads of hgv's on this section.

Watch out for the ruts. A couple of years ago I was following a guy when his bike hit the edge of a rut caused by a sunken roadworks trench which had been badly repaired. Before he knew what was happening he had a tank slapper that he could not hold and he ended up in the ditch with broken wrist and ribs. Council :tosser: denied it was their fault, even though the sunken bit of road had been marked with the blue/grey paint they use to mark bits of road in need of repair. They blamed wear and tear by hevy vehucles, even theough the trench was in the centre of the lane where a hgv would not normally have its wheels.
If he had not hit the ridge then it could have been me.

Some of those ruts (We call em tramlines) are deep enough to make 44 ton truck wobble when you go into them!!

Well worth looking out for them when on a bike, you will find them mainly on uphill slopes when/where the trucks have the power on....

Hangs anorak back up.............

This was on a downwards slope, must be just where they wake up & realise they are going to miss their junction & slam the anchors on. :p

Derek it doesn't really matter if it's up hill or down, basically it's where the road has been compressed/worn by the weight of the HGV vehicles pounding along the same piece of road day in day out!! and as most travel in lane one unless overtaking  thats the lane most affected by the "ruts/tram-lines" in most cases they will only replace the worst parts "costs etc" so the bits they don't do become even worse over time, so the whole process starts again!! :bang:
when I'm in my truck, which has a slightly narrower track than the "big boys" it can weave all over and in some areas become quite dangerous  the only thing to do is nearly "straddle" the white line or move entirely into lane two!! it has gotten really bad on the A/M180 hence they are having to replace 7 miles of road!! it's cheaper to do long lengths!! :bang: traffic management wise and plant usage,
BTW if anyone out there has a rough farm track that could do with some A1 hardcore, have a word with the main contractor thats "doing" your local road, to see if you can buy a waggon load of "plainings" it's the best stuff you can get and just needs "rolling" in once spread!!
