wanted: new central heating timer

I have a failed mechanical timer on the wall in the airing cupboard. It's a voltage free one, for what it's worth.

Are they fairly simple and generic wiring to replace with a gadtastic one with an RF control I can stick in the kitchen?

Ok thanks for those. The SMS switch is fairly pointless in this house though. We get borderline mobile reception even outdoors.

Am I right in assuming that a dual-channel voltage-free switch of any brand will take the same wires? Is it like replacing any other domestic switch?

The few I have replaced have been straightforward enough. Some come with quite good instructions too.

Went with the Honeywell Sundial RF2 Pack 2, for anyone still awake.
Seems to offer dual channel, rf linked room controller and 7 day timers.

No more battling my way through the piles of crap in the girls' room to reach the airing cupboard!

Not exactly a straight swap in the end. The shocking state of the wiring system made me buy a new box for that as well. On inspection some of the old wires weren't actually secured!

The old:

Exciting huh?

those 2 amp short glass fuses can be a bitch to find these days.

It's wiring and stuff, what's not to like? :-0)

Wiring centre

I thought you were wanting to run a programmer.

Link L1 ..........;-0))

And you should never sleeve an earth conductor and use it as a live one, tut. tut. what happened to the hot water satisfied on the cylinder stat ?

Meh. Any wires missing are because it's a simple boiler and mid position valve. The stat is wireless RF and links to the programmer.

Seeing as you're fascinated, here's the old timer and it's backplate:

Here's the new one:

Timers and stuff

I've got loads of those (old and your new one lying around)

You are still down a wire from your cylinder stat to the wiring centre for it to work 100% correctly with a Mid-position valve.

The valve and stat were in place already. What will happen? Should I use terminal 2 instead of 1 or was it always wrong before and I need a new stat?

4-core

You need a 4-core flexible cable to the cylinder stat, some need an earth, some don't.
Terminal 2 which you havn't used should be connected to that no.2 spare terminal on the wiring centre.
Job done @tu*

I used the 3 core wire from the stat that was already in place - the one coming in on the left of the old wiring centre. Shall I go figure out what the previous monkey used them for instead of assuming they were as I used them?

Oh, had a brainwave and looked up the manufacturer's information sheet on it. Doh!

Double insulated so earth not required. Guess I have to turn all my gadgets off again and rewire that later. Gah!

Ok done. Terminal 2 (Satisfied) was the green and yellow. It's correct now. Thanks for that Marcus! I guess it would never be satisfied and keep heating or something?
