w;;vVirgin blogger here so be gentle with me. I?ve been reading all the forums on here but now unfortunately I need a bit of help and advice on this one as you are the oracles on Blackbirds.
Subject: Intermittent starting problems.
I have a 2000 Bird and when it is warm there is no problems starting it, however, when it is cold it develops this intermittent problem.
Here we go everyone.
Turning the ignition on, the lights, fuel pump etc fire up no problems.
When I then press the starter button a very loud ?Bang? resonates, as though a hit of a hammer on the frames occurs. If it does by the grace of god turn the starter motor, straight away within a second the ?bang? occurs and then nothing.
After this whenever you press the starter button a single ?Click? can be heard from the starter solenoid, but there is no physical turning/engagement of the starter motor.
I have to turn the ignition on and off a number of times or flip the kill switch on off numerous times. And then keep single pressing the starter button to eventually get life out of the starter motor, even then when the starter motor does engage it is slow, but fires the girl up. Happy times!.
This nearly always occurs when the bike is cold.
I have changed the starter motor (2nd hand) , starter solenoid/relay and all leads from the battery to the starter motor and even a new battery.
I am wondering if a starter clutch problem is the cause.
Now tell me I?m am plonker and its something so simple that I will have to privately chastise myself over, because I am fresh out of ideas !!!

Hi, welcome to the mad house.

Single clicks on the solenoid sounds like it may need replacing also check the connections on it they may be loose. also check battery earth. Also the ignition switch might have dirty contacts to some ACF in the barrel will help.

Electrics great when they work but a bugger when they don't. :bang:

Guys, thanks for the advice, have cured the beast and nails are growing back. It was the fuel pressure regulator, diaphram was nazzed and was letting raw fuel into the breather pipes for cylinders 2 and 3, flooding the spark.
?90 lighter but back on the road with a smile and fluffed up hair.
Cheers everyone and a big thanks to John at JAWS for his professional chat line.
