I noticed a direction arrow on one of these. Why ????
How can it matter which way the water flows?Screenshot_20211013-232518_Samsung Internet.jpg

To let you know which end can be safely dismantled if the pipe is under pressure

Something a lot of people don't know is that better quality ones of these only turn half a turn and if you go further (eg force it) the bloody thing will leak also the seal is on the side under pressure eg the direction of flow .............. so the slot inline with the arrow is flowing and the slot at 90 degrees to the arrow is shut and the arrow should point away from the water main

Cheap poor quality ones have none of this so its anyone's guess !

it will start leaking over time if turned regularly either way.

and yes, the direction arrow Shouid be respected!
personally I prefer the valves with levers on, cost a bit more but according to my tame plumber they are much more reliable over time.

Sometimes the lever type doesn't suit.
They are the better choice.

If they freeze when turned off the water in the sphere can burst the fitting. I've been shown one. I think it was a 15mm.

Frozen water, or ‘ice’ I think they call it in the trade :sisi3: - has potential to burst any pipe work or fitting. Has even been known to push compression fittings off pipe wrk, olive included.

I am told that the Pegler ballofix valves at the ones to go for.

I know that well. I had a close call with the tank in the attic. The fitting popped off the ball valve but I discovered it before it thawed.

But I thought it was unexpected to have the fitting itself burst while turned off.

That was a good result - better than the pipe bursting!

I blame you. Mrs B has just reported one of the bloody things leaking under the sink. Just what I need, messing about with plumbing while hanging upside down under the sink while I am feeling crap (really crap) with man flu.

Cheers!
