Under-seat storage

The need to find a mounting place for my Autocom got me thinking. There are a few areas under the seat, but many of these are already used for visor wipes, disc lock etc. The area in the tail piece, just in front of the rear light looked suitable, but I?m wary of having anything bouncing round on top of the ECU.

After a few measurements, and a cardboard prototype to prove the theory, I knocked-up a tray out of 16 gauge aluminium, which would hold the Autocom and also a minidisk player (hint hint early Xmas present perhaps!) and mobile phone. The latter two can be played through the Autocom. My original pattern was slightly altered during the cutting out process to allow two 12v powere outlets to be included.

Fitting the tray was quite simple. At the rear, it uses the two studs that hold the rear light assembly (this is on a 1999 X model onwards, not sure of the fitting for the earlier model) The side use the two bolts that secure the undertrya to the rear subframe ( take care with the two bolts removed as the undertray will sag) Take care not to trap the Bowden cable that operates the seat release. The tray has a gap of about 5mm between it and the ECU.

The two power sockets were wired to the rear light. The power required for the Autocom and a minidisk player is minimal. Wiring to the rear light allows the system to be switched off whilst on the move ? if ever required.
The Autocom was bedded onto some thin foam rubber and a Velcro strap holds it in place (not shown in the photo) There is plenty of space for the other kit which can also be Velcro?d into place.

wow.......very impressed!

Derek has the autocom somewhere underneath there tied down with cable ties, which does the trick!! As for mini disc player, we use one but I put it in my pocket with a lead that runs under the seat and into the autocom. Means I can change discs on the move!!!!

that is very neat though Quiney.............did you do metalwork at school????:goofy:

I think you should patent that mate before one of those accessory companies rip off your idea !!

dunno about "knocked up one" looks pretty damm good to me!
small point and prob being picky here but just in case any water gets in there(slim chance i know, but jetwash etc?) a couple of holes in the bottom of the plate at the front away from the ecu would let it drain off before its too late...just say if im waffling s..t:beer:

Um.....

I hate to say this after looking at the great piece of artwork you've done...

...but...

I've had a cargo net, map of the UK, visor wipes and a squashed can of coke (for the side stand on grass) in that space for over 25K miles in all sorts of weather with no problems.

I also hold my mobile phone in place sometimes with a few elastic bands

Sorry :bandit:

So in the long run ....

So OK, is it a good or bad idea to store the lieks of a disc lock, chain or alike in that small handy little (chain sized) cubby hole at the back of the bike or not.

Personally I cannot see that it will cause probs with the ECU as bikes on the whole are not what you would call vibration free but a heavy disc lock banging around might not be beneficial certainly.
Any one care to add any points here?

Also either way that little carrier is quite funky and for the sake of one I would not say no to buying one should oner become avaibale on teh "open Bird market" - any plans??

Under seat plate

Hi there Quiney, I will certainly buy one, I would go for one without power outlets as I have no need for them. How long would it take for you to get one out to me? I am in Woking are you near by can I come pick it up? Also I dont seem to be able to access your PM, could you possibly forward me your address or maybe a contact number?

Thansk very much for getting back to us - cheers
