Tunisia, What's It Like

I went a few years ago, stayed at the Sahara Beach Hotel just outside of Monistir [sp] I found Tunisia OK, people friendly, polite, but can be very pushy in the markets etc, wont leave you alone to browse, and you have to haggle over every thing, can be fun but some found it daunting and a bit intimidating.

Went to a Beduin feast as an excursion, again enjoyable, but every one there was out to get some money from you....

Goods were cheap, and its worth going off the beaten track to have a nose around, leather jackets can be got very cheaply from villages just out of Monistir..

Was it good enough to make me go back?? Not really, but would not say I would never go back...

Seriously John, a friend went a few years back & he swore he would never return, however he has been back three times since & stopped in the same hotel each time [don't know which one] he says to watch out for the snakes, he was sat at a restaurant when a waiter came running past their table waving a gun about and shot a snake that was approaching them

Very hot!!

I went a few years ago, it was hot, never dropped below 40 Deg day or night for the whole fortnight.

The people are friendly as long as you are buying something, but can be a bit pushy when you say "no". I enjoyed it, but would not return unless there was nothing else that I fancied.

I went to Hammamet in 1991. Very hot and the first thing w enoticed when the plane door opened was the smell of camels (I kid you not).

The hotel,Nossa beach, was ok the hotels have their own bars but only served local stuff.

Overrun with cats, women get harressed in the markets,trying to separete me and ,the then mrs., Then offered to buy her for 6 camels.:bow:

I did have the best Chinese meal ever there, but the taxi driver on the way said in broken English "Chinoise? ah cats and dogs!!"

Other than that, Codbasher sums my thoughts up nicely,

If you do go, Take a bottle of scotch with you, worth its weight in hand made leather jackets.....

Dunno, Haven't seen her for over 10 years

She went nuts at the time, Demanded to know what I'd do with 6 camels

Told her I'd make good money doing camel rides on Blackpool beach:}

If you do go, be careful where you point a camera. Some of the older generation, especially the women, believe that a camera can capture their soul, and can get upset if you take pictures of them :eek:
