Hands up all who thought it was started by a Brit ?

Bettmann was born in Nuremberg in 1863 but emigrated to Coventry. With fellow German Mauritz Schulte, he started manufacturing Triumph-branded bicycles there in 1889 and then motorcycles from 1902 onwards. He bought Elm Bank in 1905 and lived in it until his death aged 88 in 1951. Bettmann, who had become a British citizen prior to the First World War, sold the Triumph motorcycle business to Ariel supremo Jack Sangster in 1936.

I didn't know all of that but did know it was started by a German, I had mates who worked at the Meridan factory right up to the end & was bought up not far away from it so thats probably how that little bit of knowledge leaked into my head

A couple of interesting Truimphs auctioned on 'Bangers and Cash' or what ever it's called last night

  1. A Toledo with 2247 miles on it, original, tyres, plastic covering still on the door cards in hearing aid beige which went for about £7k
  2. A Wood and Pickett Dolomite Sprint - apparently the only one they did which went for about £11k
Prices from memory.

Good programme that, I like it.

Watched it for the first time last night. I like it too.
Not sure I'd be driving the toledo without checking the rubber parts in the braking system first though. Looking at the quality of the original paintwork I don't expect the brakes where that good when new.

Toledos were awful whichever way you looked at them .

The one in the auction was particularly awful but fantastic to see such a car so,well preserved.

As the chap, said in the programme 'you can't drive it so what's the point in buying it?'

Happily There is a bum for every seat!

Now owned by a builder....
