Yesterday I was with daughter driving. She was coming up to green lights with arrow to right green.
The arrow went off so she stopped at the line.
There is a right only lane.

When arrow is green oncoming traffic gets a red. When green arrow switches off oncoming traffic gets a green

I told her that she should have continued to middle of junction.

She didn't agree.
Gave me a fright as I was waiting for bang from behind as she stopped quite suddenly suddenly. There is no amber (I dont think)

Traffic lights and filter arrows.

Green filter arrow.

If you see green filter arrows with the main red light is on (picture below) this means the way the arrow is showing is safe for vehicles to make progress.
However when the main green light comes on (and the filter arrow comes off) the main road has the right of way and you need to wait for a gap

Of course if its a yellow box junction you cannot enter unless your exit is clear.

Difficult to say if your daughter was right or wrong as it goes on the colour of the main lights...

From an ADIs perspective (I don’t know the junction) from your description she is correct. They would expect her to play safe at the junction rather than place herself into a sitting duck position.

Not a box junction.
But if there was no filter you would go into the middle of the junction and wait for a break or until lights change?

I'm not sure that is right - my understanding is that you can enter a box junction (assuming the light is green) and stop if you are turning right and are prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic.

Easy to say without knowing the specifics (surprised if there wasn't an amber) but if she needed to stop 'suddenly' she may have approached the junction too fast. I remember learning on a Bike Safe course that lights never change 'suddenly', there should be an expectation that they will change.

Spot on about the box junction, was given a talking to a while back as I entered the box junction at the end of my road, coming off a main road & turning right into the village. I was followed up the road by a PCSO in a marked car until I pulled up in my drive (about 1/2 mile from the junction) and was told, for future reference, that what I did was illegal, but as I clearly wasn't aware of the rules, he'll let me go this time.

I was certain it wasn't but wasn't about to make a scene in front of the neighbours. I looked up the relevant section in the highway code when I'd finished being talked at, and it states quite clearly that you can enter a box junction and stop to wait for a gap in oncoming traffic, if turning right. As I do the same thing regularly, I'm hoping he'll catch me again one day :)

Excellent information on box junctions.

Shame the incident in the initial post didn't happen in a box junction :)

Was talking to my RoSPA examiner, retired cop, who says you do go into middle of junction after green arrow cancels (turning right) and wait for gap.

Keep up Beaker, the original post was about a filter arrow for turning right, not a separate set of lights for the right turn.

As an ADI I agree. Otherwise student would be criticised for unnecessary hesitation. Particularly if there’s a pressure pad to signify a vehicle waiting etc.

All the lights you see are green. Just the arrow has cancelled.
Go to back of class:rolleyes:
I'll own up - I don't think I have ever seen or probably never noticed any lights like that. Is it just Ann on/off green or does it go red?

No, amber and off.
Have to study it again
Well I never.

Looking forward to the results of your studies. Maybe I need to get out more....

As an aside, I have wondered why the system used in some parts of America hasn't caught on over here....that you can turn right at some, not all, junctions if it is safe to do so when the lights are red. Obviously the equivalent here would be turning left.
