For those of us who can't take a week or two off work to tour Europe I have discovered a solution -fly drive for bikers. Just nicely returned from a long weekend touring the pyrenees and Costa Brava on a 1200GS,

Flew out on a friday morning from liverpool landed in gerona at 10.15 and was picked up at the airport by the hire company and taken to their office just outside Barcelona.

kitted out with bike and helmet -could have rented full gear for a reasonable charge but happier taking my own.

Bikes have full luggage and owner of rental business - a scot called Mike- helped me fit bracket to attach my own sat nav on the bike.

Four days enjoying the glorious twisties on excellent road surfaces and then back to the rental depot where Mike took us back to the airport for the flight home.

Brilliant service, good value and no aching butts from miles of motorway. If anyone is interested you can check out the company at www.motoespana.com

In a nutshelll...what did it cost you then? Sounds good if you're pushed for time.

Flight was about ?80...bike and helmet hire was about ?430 but the company has recently negotiated a new deal for insurance and their prices have dropped..all the prices are on their website..shuttle services provided free which if taken by taxi would have been more than ?200 return....

Hotels in the Pyrenees are pretty cheap too.

Last year took the Blackbird to the south of France and then down to Spain..fantastic once your down there but the motorway is dull until you get past Clermont Ferrand. For a quick break hiring is definitely worth considering.

Touring in south of france the easy way

For many years I have taken the train to the south overnight from calais. Now sadly demised, but have discovered you can take motor rail from S stellanbosch in Holland to a variety of southern European destinations. It has a resturant car and bar as well. I suggest train one way and drive home via Switzerland for the Alps, Route Napoleon and the wonderful passes. If you stay in andermat you are in the middle of four alpine passes. Paradise.
There is a DVD on e bay called Europes best biking roads, well worth getting a copy. Roads around Mons, Breil sur roya and Sospiel are amongst the best I have ever ridden in 36 years riding.

Enjoy
