Totally gutted,:cry: bike went down in a 30 mph low speed spill on a gravel strewn rural road two weeks ago. Now been told by insurer it’ a total loss –repairable, but uneconomical
Down on right side and slid for about 8 feet and came to a halt in the centre of my side of the road
Damage sustained – rear brake pedal bent, scrape to Beowulf exhaust and small scrape to bottom of clutch cover ,lower RH fairing scraped and broken (where crash bung ripped off leaving sheared bolt behind) scrape to front brake lever, RH mirror casing broken, but mirror folded back, glass wasn’t broken and internals looked ok, rubber gaiter scraped, nose cone scraped where it joins lower fairing and split across where the mirror mount is, insurer also estimated that front brake reservoir needs replaced although I never noticed at the time.
Estimate for repairs with genuine parts as per insurance (fully comp) is £2900:eek:, bike purchase price by me £3000 hence regarded as total loss.

Damage to clothing nil apart from scrape to visor – Damage to me – dislocated and broken left thumb.

s0s:Looking for some wisdom from the learned members of the forum as first time dealing with total loss etc
Awaiting value from insurer, once I send in all the documentation, bike had FSH stamped; both HISS keys etc and was in very good condition, new storms fitted three weeks ago
Had compulsory £700 excess so wondering what payout will amount too.
Alternative would be to buy bike back as salvage and repair would take a while as cash limited for parts brok3.

Would it be nightmare trying to insure salvaged bird?

It’s also crossed my mind and this is where looking for some advice, can you ask insurance not to proceed with claim and ask for bike back and repair yourself?

Thanks,
Not only is the bike deemed total loss at the moment so am i:)-(

People say (normally non bikers that it could be worse at least you werent badly injured) and suppose that true, but it still hurts:cry:

my move would be to try and buy it back, there's no rush to put it back on the road, so collect all the parts you need as and when you can afford them, most of that damage appears to be on the side panel, swap that and things wont "look" as bad, the top faring should weld!!:dunno: but that's what I would do!!:dunno:

Looks to me (but I'm no expert) as a lot of minor damage then a nose cone a panel + respray.

Might be worth seeing what they pay out and what the buy back is.

The minors can be lived with while you source the bits, the nose cone (worst bit) might be repairable.:dunno:

No doubt some body will point you in the right direction.

If it was my bike, i wouldn't even tell the insurance company.

Plastics can be welded, filled, ebay replacements, things like bent brake levers are easily replaced, contact RS bike paints for exact colour match paint and laquer, get a 2nd hand reservoir off ebay, job done!

Then just ride it till the engine gives up, which will probably be in about 500 years.:-0)

Can't help with your thumb i'm afraid, maybe you can get a genuine honda replacement from david silvers!

Agree with above, You find the side panels on the bay for 200-300 in the original colours and nose cones 150-250 break lever 30 so all and all it wouldve been shy of 1k and no insurance hikes.

Similar thing last October on my BMW R1100RS - slow speed (20mph) collision with car, bike slid about 5 feet and looked undamaged. Assessor checked it and reckoned Paralever mount (don't know proper talk) was bent back slightly, which allowed front mudguard to touch exhaust headers. Approx estimate to repair was ?4000 (where they get this price from, I don't know). I asked if it was better for me to buy back from insurers and he assured (sorry) me it was more financially beneficial not to buy it back. I was later offered ?2500 as compensation, and as the bike cost me ?2600, thought this was a fair deal. I removed the new panniers and the tool kit, with assessor's permission, but couldn't take the Avon Storm Ultras (less than 100 miles). And of course, I can never get a low mileage BM of that calibre again. Gutted, still miss it.

Guys,
Thanks for all the replies.

Unfortunately insurer notified as I had to have the bike recovered as could not ride with condition of thumb (being situated in the palm of my hand at that point)

On calling the recovery service number provided with insurance, they would not collect without me calling insurer and having it authorised (Possible lesson there in having separate recovery service).

Insurer had it recovered to secure car repair centre just outside Glasgow that day, but then took bike to motorcycle repair centre in Huddersfield :xm

Not sure now if I contact insurance and say that I don't want to proceed with claim and can I have my bike back they will do this or they will record it as total loss anyway causing problems at later date.

Seems shameful to let a great running bike go, but will need to see what is most cost effective and what presents less hassle in the future as may need to have bike assessed by independent engineer etc for future insurance cover

If you can't afford it yet, the bike is still rideable with little cost, just buy a few 'ouch' stickers.

Would agree, I can live with the scrapes to exhaust and clutch cover, its just the plastics that would need put repaired replaced in first instance.

Foot brake lever not to big an issue as plenty around on Ebay etc

Concern would be to take it back and find further damage hidden by fairings, mounting bracket possibly

Go and look at it... any excuse, personnel possessions under the seat.

grab the tool kit if its there regardless...

Then have a chat with our Taffy for parts.

If your insurance company will let you have the bike back, and you need to recover it, if you have any problems arranging the distance recovery, you could have it taken to my place untill you are able to sort it out I'm only about 10/15 miles away from Huddersfield!! got to be cheaper,!!:dunno:

In the same situation I refused to accept the write of offer and rebuilt the bike as I wanted it instead of back to standard. Talk to the insurers to discuss options. Asap.

Cheers will do, if you refuse to accept the write of offer (have'nt been offered any cash sum yet as bike still to be valued and my belief now is that bike remains my property until I accept cash sum, I should be able to ask for it back
in your case did you find it still had "write off" attached to it -any problems with insuring after that?
