I went to our local war memorial and spent my two minutes saying goodbye to my mates that I lost in the Gulf, as well as all the other souls that have laid down their lives for our freedom. It still makes me sad 14 years after leaving the Army, but I'm very proud of what I and ours have done.

I must admit that I always think of the Second World War on todays date but I read a bit earlier on in the Independant that 97 Britons have lost their lives in Iraq. Sobering thought.

i'm working at the royal albert hall on the festival of remembrance tomorrow - rehearsals all day today. being service led, we strictly observed the two minutes silence... except for some army chap whose phone rang about 10 metres away from me....

"oh shit!" was muttered.

'.....Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap.
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an` Tommy, 'ow's yer soul? "
But it's " Thin red line of 'eroes " when the drums begin to roll
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's " Thin red line of 'eroes, " when the drums begin to roll....'

"Tommy"......Rudyard Kipling

God Bless our fallen, thank God for our present

my thoughts

to those who have fallen that are remembered on this day. I give you my thanks, for without your sacrifice I would not have the freedoms that i enjoy and that so many take for granted. without your willingness to defend freedom of thought and freedom of speech this land would be a much poorer place. May you always be remembered on this day.

My father ,now sadly passed away , was born on the 11th november 1911 ,which means i cant think of the wars fallen without thinking of my father or vice versa . although he was in the 1939-45 he only ever told us about the humorous things that happened as i suspect most old soldiers do .
I've been lucky in as much that i have not had to fight for my country but i do appreciate those that do and hope that more could be done for the soldiers who survive the attrocities of war..
thanks to them all
