When eldest daughter passed her test I bought her an old fiesta, when she went to trade it in for a cinquecento she could only get a loan if I guarantored her & she also had to take out gap insurance, 14 months later she was involved in a non fault accident, a Montego skidded into her, her car was not economically repairable so she went through her insurance expecting to get the full value of her cinquecento, oh no, they argued that she had initially paid more than the car was worth, long story short, she lost over £800

Why not the Montego's insurance?

Is that because you only got a third place last year? Should have combed your hair.

Tickets for theGreat Yorkshire show, we are not entering this year
Very wise. My two year old grandson is entering the showjumping - hopefully he will make it a hatRick of victories adding to winning The Grand National and Derby, both while writing a thesis on particle accelerometers. In German. With one hand tied behind his back, obviously.

He is so incredibly talented, also a real catch, Elle McPherson has been warned for stalking him.

Oh she’s stalking your grandson now, will she never learn, my grandson got a Court injunction against her, I do hope he’s not copying the thesis my grandson wrote in Russian & Arabic at the same time with two pens in his mouth, whilst winning the Australian GP & knocking out Tyson fury in the first round.

Gap is a rip off
No, it isn't. Well, maybe it is when you drive a Duster but not if you have a proper car.
Not so. I wrote a 2 year old jaguar off some years ago and gap insurance put me back to full invoice value after the other party's insurance gave me the current value. Got a shiny new one to replace it. Ta very much.
I don't hesitate every time I buy a new car, I just don't buy it from the main stealer. I bought a RTI policy for something like £600 cheaper than BM were offering.

The one thing I did buy from BM was the Smart protection and alloy/tyre insurance. Way cheaper than I could get it for elsewhere.

Yes it is.
Didn’t know B& M did that.

It was done through the montego’s insurance but you have to do it via your insurance
Not true I'm afraid.

If you believe the other insured is fully responsible for your loss you simply make your claim direct to them.

You have to notify your insurer of the accident but simply tell them your claiming directly from the other party.

This works best if it's an easy slam dunk to prove.

It means you have more control over the process.

Your insurance wants a result that costs them the least. That can mean, for example, accepting some of the cost as it saves them time - but costs you no claims bonus etc.

It depends on what car you're driving. If you have an older or lower value motor then it probably isn't worth it; a decent GAP provider will tell you this. However, if buying an expensive or premium motor, then it can save a lot of grief if something very unfortunate happens. Personally, I like the piece of mind and that's my choice.

You lose out either way - you are obliged to tell your insurers if you have a prang - the premium goes up regardless if you make a claim from them.

If you have legal cover & try to recoup through them they will try everything to get out of helping you by saying “you should have let your insurance deal with it”

No, piece. Not peace, as in peace and quiet, but piece as in piece of cake. I mean I can leave that piece of my mind that would worry about it at rest.

In the meantime, while we’re in correcting mode:
