I know very litle about the 406 , but..........

I love the pug range and have had them all pretty much up to and including the 306 and 405's..

When I went to buy a 406, every one of my car dealer friends said the same,,,, DON'T !!

From what I can gather there seems to be several oo nasty issues with wiring and with the engines ( which I thought were the same as the 405 but turned out they aint )

A lot of the issues with the 406 have been sorted and there are loads of 'em for sale due to a lot of 'em being ex fleet cars or mini cabs. If thats what you want, shop around.

Oi Wolfie,
if it's a 98/99 model I can tell you that the speedo sensor will fail at
least once - this makes the speedo stop reading intermittently. The black
box costs ?35 and is in the passenger footwell.
Also, the radiator will last about 3 years (any 406) then it will need
replacing. ?100 a go
High mileage will need new discs - ?20 a corner plus pads.
Other than that they're pretty tuff. A/C is reliable as is power steering
and ABS. Airbag light can come on - but it's a loose connector under the
seat that does it.
Worth going for the higher spec as there are loads of them - don't pay top
dollar for a bottom of the range one no matter how clean it is - this was
britains favorate fleet car after the vectra for years.

HTH.

WILF, a lot of car for little money... I have just sold mine however when things go wrong it is expensive to put right. I'm more than impressed with the interior room and as for mpg its a good car, even my 2.0 estate was doing 30 mpg around town.
They are as comfy as a comfy thing with comfy cushions mate, i've done 16,000 miles in mine and can vouch for their ride quality.
If it has air con it will be superb for summer. Make sure all the electrics work and check the airbag light goes out when the engine is running.

the link works, then go to car by car breakdown, should help you out though.
No advice on colours mentioned, although I expect a nice metallic red will be fastest.

With the 405 there was a common issue with bushes failing in the rear trailing arms, causing the wheels to pitch inwards at the top. This was due simply to the lack of a grease nipple - a mod which Peugeot resisted right to the end. The tilt first becomes noticeable at approx 80k miles and progressively gets worse. It costs a shit load to fix as it's not just the bushes that get worn! (a second hand axle from a low mileage car with a front end shunt is the only practical way to go).

I don't know for sure if this was sorted by Peugeot for the 406, but it would be worth checking out.....

Had my 1.8 X reg saloon for 6 months. Average 38mpg over 6,000 miles. Its comfy, quiet, has loads of room, the boot is cavernous and takes all my survey equipment with room to spare. The air con is ace on the two hot days a year we have. With all the electric bits on it I just hope that its more robust than the Fiat I've just binned.

Everybody seems to be missing the point here ITS FRENCH. I've had one french car (shitroen Xantia) in the past and it will remain the only french car I'll ever own and I go through an average of 5 cars a year. It was a fine car till the cylinder head gasket went. cause the engine is angled back this is an engine out job. once the head is skimmed all valves need to be reseated and shimmed.

in the end a job that would normally cost about ?100 - ?150 ended up costing ?900.
Beware shitroens and puglets share the same engines.
Check the oil and water for any milky deposits and make sure the hoses aren't being over pressurised when the engines running.
