Have a bitch The annual insurance dance

Had my insurance renewal from Bennetts arrive by post last week for a not unreasonable £92.90 for the Tiger but noticed the compulsory excess had gone up to £400.

Them Meerkats gave me quotes within a couple of quid for the same cover but I noticed a few with comp excess of £250. One with similar cover was £4 less than Bennetts, so I gave Bennetts a bell to see if they could match it.

First they re-quoted me with £250 excess but it put the price up by £17, so I bit the bullet & said I'll stick with the original quote they gave me as for the sake of £4 and a higher excess, I'll stick with who I know.. I was all ready to pay when the adviser said 'That'll be £107'. Hang on, the quote I have in writing is only £92.90, why is it now £107?

Apparently, because they gave me another quote, i.e. one where the excess was lower, they then had to re-quote me with the higher £400 excess & the 'new' quote was £107. Asked if they could match or at least get close to the quote I got from another provider and the answer was 'This is the best we can offer you', despite MCN Compare quote from Bennetts coming in at less than £90. Needless to say, after 3 years with Bennetts, I'll be moving my insurance this year.

Don't get it, why are insurance companies so eager to lose customers who've been with them for more than a few years?

Do what I did, go online as new punter.
Get cheaper quote from same insurer.
Let current insurance expire.
Go with cheaper quote online.
These muppets read from company scripts and will not budge.
I was informed that they 'Bennetts' could not match their own online quote as it was done via another 'in house' department.
In the end it £33 cheaper + renewal charge £20? Saving of £53. Go figure.

Do have a play around with the excess amount, on more than one occasion I've had zero voluntary excess and it was cheaper than with any excess, go figure?!

Renewal Fees should be outlawed.
It seems like everything in life is now geared up to shaft the loyal customer.

Always go for £0 voluntary excess, I found a number of years ago that it either seems to make no difference or, as you've found out, sometimes cheaper than with.

Renewed my RAC breakdown a short while ago, premium £38, Admin and renewal charges £64

Why not? Let someone else take the strain as it were.
How many a year are you entitled before they smack you with a higher premium?
