Doing another euro trip this year and the current planned route will take us on a motorway for a short while in the switzerland (Basel to Vorstatt, Nebikon). I've been there before and bought a vignette but I'd rather not buy pay ?40 (it whatever it is) for half an hour of motorway.

Does anyone know how heavy they police the vignettes and if it's mainly cctv based do they link with the UK.

My options are...........

A. Alter the route to avoid motorways, have sat nav so easy done but will add unwanted time on shit roads and in suburban areas

B. Take the risk and travel on the Motorway without a vignette

C. Buy a vignette. Booo.

you get checked passing across the border and will get escorted to a booth to pay for a pass before they let you proceed. Not negotiable.

I like the ebay idea.

I've ridden through switzerland before and was not checked entering or exiting. Maybe this is only if you exit or enter via a motorway?

Going to have a look at a route mod and if that isn't too tragic I'll go that way, if the route mod is no good I'll see what ebay brings up.

...And remember... "The vignette must be sticked on the windshield." :-0)

Yes I had a look and noticed the going rate on ebay seems to be around what you can buy them for in switzerland so that seems pretty pointless.

I reviewed the route and it's only a small section of motorway from heading south from Basel that we were planning to use. For the sake of an extra 30 minutes riding I'm just going to use the avoid motorways/tolls feature on the sat nav and save 40 quid.

I don't mind paying toll fee's but ?40 for 45 minutes on a motorway is more expensive than a track day

...It's so obvious that the thought of paying the toll fee is killin' ya... :}

...But it's not forty quid! :t

...?27.03 for a vignette - see? ...Saved ya thirteen sobs already! :-0)

...or ?189.38 (?200 fine + vignette) if you get caught... :h

...or an extra 45-60 minutes on your travel time...

Yes the ?40 comment was rather stupid, I realised once I'd posted but couldn't be arsed to post a correction.

I am a yorkshire man afterall so would rather not pay if I can avoid it but won't lose any sleep either way. There's another chap on the trip who's tight as a ducks arse so I think he'll be voting to take the back roads.

Will either pay and get a cool sticker or go the alternative route as a 200 Euro fine and a brush with the swiss law doesn't sound appealing.

It is now a place that is on the 'total fuckin ban' list for us.. we will not go through or to Switzerland on any account

And just a reminder, if you have a trailer, that will be TWO vignettes you will need. So thats ?55 the arsehole want, for a 30 minute fooking drive

We came off a tiny alpenstrasse in the motorhome 4 years ago to be confronted by two ARMED police standing with a very aggressive stance, one hand on the gun type of thing

One immediately walked round the back to confirm we had a trailer on.. My van was left hand drive so I had a clear view of him in the mirror

As he walked back he had a big grin and gave a thumbs up to his mate..

Chummy stepped forward and only then noticed we did indeed have two vignettes in the window.. the scowl on his face as he waved us on was in part what convinced us that we would never EVER give the wankers another penny of our lolly.. In general we found the people somewhat greedy and all the fun of a morgue..

Take a look at a map.. Almost all destinations can be reached with only a slight detour to avoid the place completely.. and a few gallons of gas is a darned site cheaper than one of the robbing bastards vignettes !!

When they start paying to travel on our roads I might reconsider but until then, the whole fookin nation of Switzerland can just fuck right off !!!!!!!!!

yes.. I am a tad anti .. I know it is hard to spot but hey............ :-0)

Yes, you can buy a 10 day one in Austria, In Switzerland its a full year only.

Avoid motorways, the other roads are better riding anyway, it just takes a little longer, but much more fun!

If you are going to the Switzerland yes
Now you know why we avoid the place no matter what

Austria has just as many passes and great roads, and like Germany, bikes are made most welcome
