Your thesis ignores the fact that imitations and air rifles and even BB guns can and do look extremely 'real', particularly to those like me who have no interest in the subject. And particularly if you are being threatened with one.

Carrying knives or any sort of firearm in public should be mandatory jail time as far as I am concerned. As should being involved in supply or manufacture of drugs.

Nice simple rules that even the scrotes should be able to understand.

For someone who has "no interest in the subject" you seem to have a lot to say about it  most of your opinions on the matter are typical of someone who does not understand that 90% of knives or guns are simply a tool & legally held & used by responsible owners, or used for pleasure, this is the attitude the shooting community has to deal with all the time, as for the other 10% no matter what laws you might like to see passed they will still do just as they please (lets face it there are probably 50 bladed tools in your house right now that could easily be used as a weapon ................ Oh & dont forget that big bag of golfist sticks, very dangerous in the wrong hands (yours :D) ban them & send all golfists to jail for 3 years for possession of an offensive weapon ;)

One good point you make is about imitation firearms, replica's are so good now I agree it can be difficult to tell the difference, at a club or used legally in your own back garden I have no real problem with them but waving one about on the street can & should get you shot with the real thing ................... again they are legal to own & use in the right place but those that carry/use them for anything other than pleasure activities should be treated to a long holiday at her majesty's pleasure (y)

"In public"

You can carry a gun absolutely legally in public under certain conditions, cased, not loaded, ammunition separate, & with a reasonable excuse EG I am walking to my shooting permission ;)

Stop being so pedantic.

You know what I mean. The bloke who carries a knife to go to the pub and that sort of stuff.

No, you tarred everyone with the same brush.

I have gone to a pub with a knife in my pocket, because I forgot it was there, after working on a farm where it gets used.

Would I deliberately put a knife in my pocket just to go to the pub? No, not a chance.

Many years ago I had to rent a home for six months while waiting for the current one to be built.

When we went to view the potential home, the previous tenant was still in residence.
A police officer with a large baseball bat kept by the front door.
A couple of months later I read in the local paper he'd been done for insurance fraud.
Put his car in a local field and torched it while claiming it had been stolen.

I am talking about those that habitually carry weapons for no reason. The bloke that goes to the pub with a knife in his pocket. The bloke that has a knife by the seat in his car.

On Police interceptors on Monday they stopped a bloke riding a quad bike illegally on a beach - he had an air rifle with him that to me - and plod - looked like an assault rifle. I wouldn't want that pointed at me or even in my vicinity. As it turned out his previous convictions meant he was not allowed an air rifle in any event.

As previously mentioned I carry a multitool all the time in fact the only times its not on my belt where it lives are when I am at home relaxing or on the odd occasion I have to go somewhere posh that requires dressing up a bit so yes i have been to the pub with it & a police station, doctors, in fact anywhere you can think of within reason i have carried it & will continue to do so

Contrary to your belief it does not make me a criminal it does not mean I am out to stab someone, its just a much part of me as mobile phones are to some people, the difference being I dont have to check (phone wallet keys etc) as its always there & i use it almost every day ............... if i wanted somehing as a weapon it would be something far bigger or nicely heavy like a golfist stick ;)

I liked that as even though I disagree to a degree I do see what you are getting at (y)

I have carried a penknife ( & larger ones when required) since the age of 8 & have been in a position to defend myself or even give someone a good clump more times than I care to remember but the thought of stabbing someone never ever crossed my mind & never will ;)

So there is a distinction to be made between someone like myself who regularly carries a "tool" & uses it every day & someone who goes out with a "weapon" with intent to harm ............. my Gerber multitool that lives on my belt all the time is not technically legal even though it is within the permitted size as I understand it because the blade locks out (better than it folding on my fingers) ......... FYI I have a few knives etc all of which are perfectly legal to buy, own or even sell if the mood takes me

While I am at it ..... I a saw a cop type programe a few weeks ago where a bloke had his air rifle confiscated & destroyed, mainly because he was as thick as two short planks & couldn't come up with a reasonable excuse to having it as any responsible air gunner would have! ..... the point being the copper didn't have a clue & kept referring to it as a FIREARM which it plainly wasn't & would never be until tested OVER the legal limit (12 ft lb) ............ it turned out to be a bloody electric bb gun ffs, 6ft lb if you are lucky but probably nowhere near even that with no way of upping the power even if you were daft enough to want to, still destroyed

Boils my piss to be honest I was shouting at the telly again until the mrs turned it off  FFS I agree we should have laws in place to control the idiots but at least make the numpties that are supposed to uphold those laws conversant with them
Back in the days of football hooliganism I once went to see Leeds play Barnsley at Oakwell and it wasn't until I was in the queue about to go through the turnstile that I thought "shit, I've got my knife in my pocket ". Long stopped thinking of the Swiss Army Knife as a KNIFE, it was just a very useful and versatile TOOL.
To me it's not so much the size of the blade but about the style of the knife. But then I'm not the one that has to prove anything in court.

Anything and everything can be used as a weapon. I once saw a self defence expert show how you can inflict serious harm to someone, using a bank card, if they try to mug you while getting cash out of an ATM. Anyone remember the combs that had a wire handle, widely used until they were deemed a weapon. I even knew someone who, many years ago went out on a night out, with a sit throat razor in his inside jacket pocket. As he put it
1) It's straight razor for shaving not cutting throats.
2) Since he's staying at a friend's overnight, he'll need it to do said shave in the morning.
3) It's being carried in it's storage box, so not exactly ready to hand.

All very well but when you’re dealing with multiple incidents per day / week you would never be on top of every law. That PC probably has about 70-100 active cases in their work account ranging from a basic shop lift to a GBH plus associated traffic offences. To ask him or her or them to be fully conversant with the law in every way is way too much. The law surrounding firearms is complex and as you rightly say the magic 12ft/lb figure is in the mix. Working on their feet and quoting law is very difficult when someone is posing a threat. More a matter of get things safe and boxed off, sort the finer details later but get it safe first. After all their domain is protection of life and property in accordance with a) the law and b) force policy. crikey I wish I could sleep longer !

I was given an engraved Swiss Army Knife when I left my role in Zurich.

Beautifully engineered, it remains in the presentation box in my bedside table and it will remain there.

but you might have remembered if the law forbid it?
