My favourite is to say " hold on I will just turn the radio down "
Then just carry on with what I was doing andd leave them hanging on.

To be fair ever since we got the new fones that screen all calls we rarely get cold callers, but my favourite was'thank you for calling. Could I ask where you got this number as it is the emergency line for Norfolk Constabulary
