Yesterday I decided to sell my DJI Spark, despite a spare battery and flying case being given me for Christmas

Had a buyer for it on hand so took his money.............

Remember the drone code john.......
I have my OWN code.... If a drone annoys or endangers someone do not fly
If folk WANT me to fly and video them, so be it !

I rest my case on why they should only be available on a licenced basis for commercial use

This fuckwit has been near drones......on the busy beach down here in the summer, on the busy clifftops being used to look at birds nesting on the cliff face.

Yes I know john "it's the minority" but this is what I see down here. Total disregard for others and wildlife.

These things needs to be properly regulated.

In my view.

and like most other rules/laws,they will still be broken as there is no/little enforcing of them.
So far I've only had interest from other people whilst I've had mine in the air.

A mate of mine based in the Outer Hebrides has been using his drone (DJI Phantom 4 Pro) to help the local community owned estate with inspection work in hard to access areas of land.
On the back of that he then got some work from city based solicitors doing aerial photography and videos for croft sales. All was going swimmingly until the stories in the press started appearing about eejits with drones buzzing airfields.
The solicitors that he worked for then insisted that he had to go the full monty and get certified. As the only viable course leading to a licence that was available to him was on the mainland he ended up shelling out virtually the same as the cost of the drone to get licenced (including travel and accommodation costs).

From his description of the course material I'd say that the CAA have lifted large chunks of the PPL material piecemeal, so the course currently is over the top and expensive. I suspect it'll take a couple of years (if at all) until it is streamlined into a more relevant and cost effective licence.

That rather contradicts your post at 2.20pm yesterday.
No it does not.. What I do has nothing to do with the rules as set out.
It has a lot to do with what is acceptable behaviour.. Same as anything in life

And if you thing someone who has taken an exam does anything different think again
Car drivers pass a test, yet bend the rules almost daily in one was or another..
I know I would rather be hit by a 300 gram drone than a two ton car

I do understand what you are saying John, and I have always said it is, as ever, the minority spoiling it for the majority.

would yo be against having to be licenced to use a drone? To use your driving anology, if you break the rules you get your licence removed/endorsed. Seems reasonable to me.

If you get caught, of course....

Later this year, drones over 250g will have to be registered and users sit an online 'test'

If you go down the route of licencing hobbyist drone jockeys (i.e. the small sized lightweight stuff) then you need to seriously consider licencing cyclists. As was reported earlier this year....a speeding cyclist can kill if they hit a pedestrian and you're far more likely to be hit by that than a drone.
Personally I'd like to see licencing for drones above a certain weight, but as per my post above, they need to streamline the licencing process and bring the cost down significantly. At the moment you're looking at £1000+ and that's taking the piss when you look at the typical costs to licence a car driver for a 1 ton vehicle.
