Trump being castrated on social media would seem to be a turning point - social media has been 'self regulating' to date.

Is it time for global legislation?

Do the social media companies need to do more ?

Is intervention a suppression of 'free speech'?

Are Amazon, Apple and others right to remove access to Parler (this is a social media site where Trump supporters among others that have been banned from Twitter, Facebook and others gravitate to) from their platforms?

Although you could argue that he has the right to free speech, as the president, Trump's incitements represent a clear and present danger, so I think it's reasonable to gag him.

Interesting to hear that Pelosi is trying to have his access to the nuclear codes revoked.

Dodging the question a little, I do not believe there has been much in the way of free speech in an awful lot of countries for many years.. the UK being one of the most restricted places in the world, ranking with China and Russia

My view of it is that you only get censored if your views lean to the right. I think left-wing views get more than their fair share of airtime and anyone who disagrees is immediately labelled a bigot.

Free speech is a thing of the past and ito my mind, social media is largely to blame. Social media gives voice to everyone and anyone who chooses to broadcast their message/belief to the masses. This is irrespective of whether it's true, an opinion or a positive effort to incite.

I know that we, on this site have different ideas, opinions and beliefs and most of what's said in response on this site is tongue in cheek (and received as such) but we don't have the same audience as mass social media.

You may think that providing social media for the masses promotes free speech, except that if you hold an opinion that someone else disagrees with, you get lambasted for it. the more people who disagree, the more vitriol is likely to be heading your way. It's got to the point that you run the very serious risk of isolation, job loss, loss of freedom and in some cases, loss of life if you dare to say something controversial or somemthing that the masses disagree with.

Add to this the number of folowers some have and that's an aweful lot of people who can be influenced by the beliefs and ideas of one person. Trump is a case in point, maybe an extreme point but one tweet from him can and does lead to loss of life.

That's not freedom of speech, that's 'freedom of speech, but only if you agree with me'.

The average septic has absolutely NO idea what free speech is.. Having worked with them for many many years in the 70's -80's I know of which I speak..
But even THEY, when a bit pissed and sitting round talking bollox, would say how great England is, but how much it is like they thought Russia would be like..
Often taking the pee out of brits with 'what good little citizens we all are' having SOOOOO many rules that we all obey

I’ve been to Russia and China. Sorry John, you are way off the mark. By several thousand country miles.

Interesting suggestion that now social media is actually banning or restricting the orange one they are actually exercising "editorial control".

For many years they've fought against being held jointly responsible for the content on their platforms.
Arguing that they can't be responsible for what's posted as they have no editorial control.

I never said that...
You said that our (lack of) freedom of speech, on the basis of restriction, is up there with China and Russia. I’ve been to both countries and I’m saying it isn‘t, not even close.

If you’ve implied something different to what I understand then either Alec has hacked your account or you need to be a bit clearer.

I am big headed enough to believe I have the power to rank what country is where in the free speech department but I know I am not really..
Thank you for believing I DO weald that amount of influence on the world stage though :)

There was a clue in the second of my posts :)

As I've said, I've been to both Russia and China. In those countries, if you're stupid enough to speak out against the Rodina or the Party, respectively, then you disappear. Speak out here and you get branded a racist, homophobe, Nazi, etc. and have the leftie liberals frothing at the miff. But that's about it

Thing is, the average ham shank is as thick as a wrestler's forearm when it comes to anything outside their own borders. If memory serves, less than 10% of them have a valid passport that they've used for international travel. Even then, they very seldom venture further afield than the Caribbean. Therefore, that bit went right over my head.
Thank you for believing I DO weald that amount of influence on the world stage though :)
Um, I don't but I might when you're as well travelled as me :asz:

I think you have hit the nail squarely on the head.

Facebook, Twitter, etc have been unregulated from day one, absolutely in the owner's interests while they take in $bns by way of advertising revenue. No incentive for them to regulate content. As I have said for maIke the Wild West'.

Now Trump has brought the platforms under close scrutiny the owners are somewhat belatedly scrabbling to show they can regulate themselves as they do not relish the thought of being regulated by government.

It is very similar to banks and anti-money laundering/due diligence processes - they said they would regulate themselves as they didn't want to be told what to do but it didn't work and it ended up being regulated, which caused an industry in itself, much to the detriment of the bank's bottom line.

Do you wield any influence over The Weald?

Pow-Lo asked me to ask as he didn't want to appear argumentative today
