As I have no experience of it I’ve answered accordingly. But from all the negative comments I hear on various fora I’d prefer not to visit them. I’m assuming we’re replying to Fb, Twatty, and suchlike, and not quality owners fora such as this one.

It's neither good nor bad.

It's a tool, as @slim63 said in the other thread. It depends on the person operating the tool as to how dangerous and destructive it can be.

And how much of a tool the operating person is.

As Caspar says much depends on the person at the keyboard

I have seen some bad things on FB, racist comments, twats posting video's of joyrides in nicked cars & have heard of kids being bullied on all of the social media platforms to the point of suicide, this last saddens me & makes me angry at the same time

On the other hand I have seen lost kids, old folk & dogs found through the power of FB I have even known of nicked bikes being spotted & recovered so there is some good in it if used with some decency & common sense

So there is both good & bad in there & its all mixed up together so you need your own decency filter firmly in place to use it in a responsible manner, I don't particularly like FB but use it in what I hope is a reasonable responsible manner

There isn't a 50/50 option available so I have not voted here

Same as cars. Should we ban them because so many people are killed by twats driving crazily.

Occasionally watch the cop programmes.
Not sure I could do the job, I'd be breaking legs and fingers, for a start.
Drivers with total disregard for life.

Artic driver doped up denying he had taken anything for weeks.

Not the most sensible or well-considered post. If you’re going down that road, we might as well ban alcohol as well. That shit’s caused more damage over the years than any motorised vehicle.

Your alcohol theory is correct.

Is social media good or evil?
I will summarise thus.
A hammer is a good thing in the right hands but given to Peter sutcliffe it becomes something different.

The full effects of social media are wide open for all to see. Looking back over the past ten years or so, have you ever known such a weak and insecure collective of people?

In theory, I think the idea of social networking is great but the reality is much different. I agree that as users we can impose our own filters but what happens when we become the product instead of the user? We are all aware that data is big business, hence the massive net worth of tech companies who arguably produce nothing of value. The money, at the root of everything good or bad, is made from advertising and various algorithms make sure we are not only seeing what we want to see, but also what the tech companies want us to see. I honestly believe that social media is the biggest influencer of young minds today and that is truly frightening.

More or less my point.
Most everything is as a downside.
Moderation, sensible use etc.....
