Indeed, the back "streets" have a good selection of eateries.
If you haven't figured it out already, vaperretto is the best way of seeing Venice from the water. For reasons i couldn't understand the anti clockwise service is almost empty in the morning rush hour. We couldn't get anywhere near the clockwise service for the locals pushing the tourists out of the way!!

Hope you enjoy St Marks Square more than me - a total tourist trap when we were there in June, hopefully not so busy at this time of year.

Hotel right on grand canal 200 yards from rialto. Really quite quiet tourist wise. Would hate it during the peak times.

Our one and only trip was somewhat marred by attempted pick pocket incidents and some scum bag trying to nick my camera right out of my hand. All attempts failed but I do not think we will be risking another visit
