Smoking during pregnancy

Sarah’s friend Rachel carried on smoking whilst she was pregnant despite the warnings, she gave birth to a very big & apparently healthy baby boy who she named “Hunter” he is now 7 years old & has enjoyed helping on his parent’s farm, even driving tractors.
For the past four weeks Hunter has been in hospital with a serious chest infection, his temperature is spiking & he has been on several anti-biotics which have had no effect, he is looking at at least another four weeks in Hospital & the Doctors are thinking of moving him to icu & putting him into an induced coma & performing an operation that involves breaking his ribs & manually scraping his lungs.
Poor kid is really going through it at the moment, Rachel is beating herself up over ignoring all the advice during her pregnancy.

Whilst she shouldn't have smoked while pregnant, she shouldn't beat herself up over this. If he's been a healthy boy until now I'd say it's nothing to do with the smoking and just one of those things especially if he's been around animals on the farm

Sadly one of the first things the Doctor’s asked Rachel was “how was the pregnancy, did you smoke.?” Apparently smoking doesn’t always have an immediate effect.

My sister-in-law smoked throughout both her pregnancies. still smokes now (37 years and counting). both she and my brother were heavy smokers in the house while my nephews were growing up. One of them is 30, the other 33 and neither of them appear to have suffered any ill health to date, although the oldest is allergic to pine leaves & the other has a speech impediment.

I get there's always an exception to the rules but I think some medical practitioners are too quick to jump on the easy answer. Both me and my brother suffered childhood asthma, I still have asthma. Every time I've changed doctors surgeries I've been told my asthma is due to my mother smoking while pregnant & while I was growing up. Neither of my parents ever smoked.

My Father was a heavy smoker from the age of 14, he gave up at 68 as he got pneumonia, he lived to 91 & it was only a fall down stairs that finally got him.
I go out into the sun at every opportunity, the only sun screen I’ve used since 1974 is Hawaiian tropic factor 2, most of the time I don’t use any sun screen, Bev keeps in the shade & uses factor 50, she got skin cancer, my eldest brother also used a high factor & tended to avoid the sun, he also got skin cancer.

One of the lads that played football for me was brought up in a home where both parents were chain smokers. They had a beautiful home but it was horrible going in there. The poor sod permanently stank of cigarette smoke.

The lad was a regular smoker from about 13/14 and if nothing else it restricted his athletic ability - he was a promising footballer as a youngster but as he grew older he spent more time on the pitch bent double trying to catch his breath than he did patrolling right midfield as he had done so energetically in earlier years.

I bumped into him at a wedding a few years back and it was really upsetting to hear his voice that sounded like he had swallowed a bag of gravel. Having lost my brother and a dear workmate to smoking related throat cancer it is inevitable what the future holds.

Mind you he does coke as well and I don’t suppose that helps.

One of the PEi’s at work was a promising Footballer & was on the books of a horrible Manchester club (not City) he was told to stop smoking, he didn’t & instead of becoming a multi millionaire bench warmer he joined the Navy then the Prison service, too fond of the drink now & recently suffered a stroke.

On the subject of smoking, I smoked from 22 up to 41, 20 years ago. Did it affect my athletic ability? Probably not. I used to run 5 miles every other day in my late 20's, but gave up when I moved to Peterborough. Not so much fun running around a city as it was in the countryside & being inherently lazy, I could never find the incentive to carry on. Anyway, my knees were shot. I remained fairly fit right up until my heart started playing up 2 years ago.

Anyway, the point is from the day I gave up smoking, I've never got rid of the slight cough I developed. There's no doubt it's from smoking and luckily it's never developed in to something more serious. I have annual asthma checks and my lung capacity is still very good and my heart rate falls quickly after exercise. I dare say if I had my time again, whether i smoked or not probably wouldn't change , even though I know it's bad for you.

But then I also drink & ride a motorbike, not at the same time, & some say they're both bad for you too :nusenuse:

I think everyone can name a person or persons who smoked heavily and survived to an old age, but there's a lot more out there who have died of smoking related issues.
