Well if anybody wants to say anything to the TV here is your chance!
(Email to me at a previous contract sent yesterday)

Subject: Stone Mastic Asphalt, ITV West news
I?m a journalist with ITV West news, and I?m conducting some research into the use of stone mastic asphalt in the region.

I read in your May 2005 newsletter that SMA has been used to resurface a section of the A370 between Hewish and Congresbury, and in your newsletter you appealed for thoughts and comments.

I was wondering if you?d had a response from your members about the use of SMA. Have you or any of your members come across or experienced problems with SMA road surfaces?

Thank you ever so much in advance for your help. I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Kirsty

Well I have signed it, but given the response to the road charging issue ( 1.8 million signatures ? and they are going ahead anyway ), and the more recent medical one ( buggered if I can remember the name of the problem but again, total zero is basically the response again ), I honestly cannot see the point of these things any more..

I spose it would help if we lived in a democracy instead of a police state

Done too.

While I agree with Jaws, I also think that stopping doing anything is exactly what they want us to do. It may be pissing in the wind but at least we're pissing instead of hoping it will just go away.

I suspect that they will also use the accident stats on SMA to reduce the speed limit and put up speed cameras.

Signed too. Been lucky not to find any of this stuff on a bad day. I've seen what I think is SMA laid on a roundabout just after Warminster (towards Salisbury) - every time I go round the roundabout I see new skid marks on it. Scary!

exactly what happened on a road that I used to commute on (B4008 towards Glos) That road was 'slippery' and accidents after re-surfacing included a police car heading towards another accident! Speed limit dropped camera van occasionally installed..............on the justification of the 'accident record' that was due to the re-surfacing!

ITN News

Got a call from a reporter yesterday from ITN news they're doing an investigation into our beloved SMA

She's looking to interview bikers who've come to grief on the shit.
She's set an interview date with me for the afternoon of 8thMay.

Anyone else that is interested in giving they're 2p worth contact me with your details and I'll pass them on 07723 038899.

It's been a while since SMA's been in the press even the biking press seem to have put it on the back burner concentrating more on pot holes.

Governent Response to petition

Read the Government's response here said:
The Government is committed to maintaining the trunk road network, including motorways, in a safe and serviceable condition and is aware of the concerns expressed by some road users regarding the use of Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) as a road surfacing material.

The Highways Agency, responsible for managing the trunk road network in England, conducted trials of SMA in the early 1990's but decided not to continue its use following concerns regarding skid resistance on a small number of trial sites. Instead a range of modern proprietary surfacing materials are now specified, following rigorous testing and certification to ensure that they remain safe throughout their service lives.

Regular network wide road condition surveys, including measuring skid resistance in wet conditions, are carried out by the Agency (not TRL) to confirm the network remains in good condition. Research conducted by the Agency since the early 1990's on surfacing materials has ensured that the trunk road network continues to be amongst the safest in Europe, as proven by international road accident statistics. The research has included the assessment of the surfacings in both wet and dry conditions and concluded that in normal driving conditions there is no increased risk of accidents associated with these materials.

Ongoing research examining accident statistics on the trunk road network is presently showing that the accident risk over the whole lives of modern surfacings is very much reduced compared to the traditional surfacings, indicating that modern surfacings are in fact much safer in use. This research will be completed in a few months time and the final report will be published soon after.
Oh well thats ok then. c7u8

Don't know if this info is history, news or even correct.

I was speaking to a tarmac chappie at snetterton .. franchise pot hole repair business.

It would appear that SMA is a tarmac without anti skid properties that has never been tested on bikes.. the anti skid bit is an additive.

Also most SMA is in..... WALES..

If the above 'not tested on bikes' is true - how the feckin hell did they get away with that, and are the councils liable as its not been tested on bikes.

Yep we got a lot of the fucking shit and yep it ain't had any tests with bikes

out yesterday with Stan and Deejay for a spirited ride to Newtown A483 mile after mile of lol twisty stuff and lots of sections with SMA on it

Deejay said a few times he could feel the tyres start to let go when pressing on a bit through a corner

I just back off now as a matter of course on the crap as I've fallen victim to it I don't want a repeat this year
