Silent Calls

I have had about 8 silent calls over the past two days all at different times of the day. I dont consider them nuisance calls at the moment that are worthy of reporting as I have tried to ring the 08700 number back while dialling 1471.

I was greeted with a "sorry there is no reply" when I called the number back and the line did not even ring prior to this message coming through.

Am I right in believing that some marketing firms can set up speed diallers to just plague households to see if they get replies from residential numbers?
I seem to rememebr that BBC Watchdog may have had an input on this problem some time ago.
I have tried to bring the problem to the attention of my subscriber NTL but I get a tad p*"&&ed off waiting 20 minutes in a queue

Anybody else had similar probs? :bandit:

It seems to be from call centres that automatically dial lots of numbers but only have a certain number of people to answer them should they pick up .
weve ended up not answering the phone between 5 -7 pm because of it

You need to register on the following sites.......

Excellent - thanks vm Fodder. Less than 30 seconds to register to stop the silent calls and it did say that these calls were more than likely from call centresa as Gypsy quite rightly pointed out.

I have come to the conclusion that if you ever want a straight and quick answer - just post on here.

Thanks again

There's more.....

There are some Premium Lines scams going on at the moment as well. They look for answerphones in order to leave you a message asking that you ring a given number (which is a 090... number). They try to disguise the number somewhat by saying "blah blah blah.. please call 09 [pause], 065 [pause], 123472.."

The way they dictate the number not all folk will recognize it as an 0906 premium line. When you get there, there is a longwinded recorded message which doesn't really go anywhere but keeps you hanging on for ages at ?3.50 minute!

The scam doesn't work if you answer so they don't press the talk key, hence your silent call.

Don't think the Tel Pref service catches these calls as they aren't bonafide marketing companies so they dont adhere to the register....

This probably doesn't apply in your case but you may get bogus rings when there is a BT enginneer working in the Cabinet ( green box on the side of the road) - it is possible to short a pair of wires and somebody in the locality will get one ring on his phone.

another phone scam

this was going around a while ago.......

Young lady, late(ish) eveining knocks on your door, sorry to bother you my car has broke down :violin: may i use your phone??, of course you can love!! she dials her hubby  then spends 10 mins giving directions to your home, puts phone down and says thanx and leaves........

what she did was phone her biz number that she set up to charge the caller ?10 a min her 10 min call just cost you ?100, 3 months later you get your bill and see it on there inform police who respond with "Did you give her permission to use your phone" ummmm well copped out.
in the mean time she has walked upto the next 10 houses in your street asking if she can call her hubby as she has broke down 1-1/2 hrs work ?1000 what a job, and not a thing you can do about it. c7u8

We had a case of this a while a go, it turned out that I have bought some books from the Military Book Club, bought the minimum I needed too, then cancelled, a few Months later, the wife got silent phone calls, she was suspicious thinking it was some big titted big bird after my body. Eventually it turned out it was the MBC ringing, and because they wanted to speak to me, upon hearing a female voice they put the phone down, clever or what!

By the way I dont answer the phone just in case its work trying to call me in $%3un
