Had a visit from Bev’s brother David & his daughter Rachel & Granddaughter Bailey.
When we were chatting if anything seemed to be a revelation to Rachel she responded “shut up” I know she didn‘t mean to be rude but I discovered that I really hate that expression, it just sounds so disrespectful.

In the south west areas of Hampshire (New Forest, etc) locals will say "Wah!" if you tell them something that surprises or shocks them.
It took me quite a while to realise that was it.... they weren't going to add anything further.

I nearly put my fist through the radio once when some gobby, cockerny cow kept saying it in an unnecessarily loud voice, sounded like 'shaaa aaap!'

As well as ignorant, it sounds f'ing rude. I'm surprised you didn't tell her.

Was it as an expression of surprise or just to tell you off?

I have always enjoyed responding ‘way’ when someone says ‘no way’.

Down here a response to a similar situation especially from an older person is “getta way with ee”.
Or my favourite “well I’ll be buggered be drackly”.
