SIMON " RONNIE " SMITH ? TT racer and Performance Bikes magazine road tester ? died in a road accident on Friday night near his home in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

Ronnie, 41, rode at every TT since 1993, winning eight silver replicas and nine Bronze replicas. In 2002 he won the 750cc class in the Production TT, and was the fastest 750cc rider in the Senior TT. He also regularly rode at the Macau TT, was an accomplished competitor in British supersports and superstock racing, and made his British superbike debut at Donington last year on a GSX-R1000.

Outside his racing, he?ll be remembered for his exploits as a freelance rider working for MCN?s sister publication Performance Bikes, where his familiar " Magic Roundabout " helmet became famous enough to inspire a production replica. He worked for Performance Bikes from 1995 until his death.

Ex-PB editor Mark Forsyth is planning to set up a fund to help Ronnie?s partner Jane and two children, Harry and Fred. Anyone wanting to make donations can contact MCN for more details. His funeral is expected to take place later this week.

Damn, that is very sad news indeed.
Although not a fan of his journalistic talents, when I met him he turned out to be a really nice bloke with a down to earth attitude.
I think he will be greatly missed by a lot of people.

Absoute shitter..........

............I became a follower of Ronnie's exploits after my first expedition to Le Mans a few years ago. I had just got my CBR1000 and had just started reading Perf Bikes. Ronnie and his peers really made me laugh with their irreverent approach to biking and journalism for that matter !!

I magine my surprise and joy when, stuck on the start/finish straight in the middle of thousands of french unwashed, I spy that famous helmet on board an R1 as I remember coming round the last corner on the back wheel at mach 3 !! How we cheered. As Jaws says, he was a very pleasant down to earth bloke when I met him at Donnington. I'm truly gutted :B

For what it's worth...

...I am feckin' gutted (as Ronnie would say). I have been reading PB for years and always found his irreverent style highly entertaining.

He is all over the 2003 PB calendar (typically with the front hoop hoisted!) and he will be sorely missed.

God bless ya Ronnie.

It's always sad to hear of the death of any biker.

But on a diffrent note, it's a wonder more of his Journalist colleges don't bite the big one. Watching some of the video's these mag produce.
