Say fella's.. I have been wanting to get myself a tidy chain and padlock for when we are touring and the bike has to be left in a not so secure parking area if you get my drift.. Well I treated myself to one which I thought would be fine and it is, only problem is, it weighs a fuggin ton ....

Now as weight saving were possible is a must on our long tours do you think I might be as well off with a lighter gauge one or stick with what I got.. A lighter gauge one will put the opertunist off etc ..

What do you guys use and are the quality ones worth the extra wieght ???

heres what arrived today.. he has a ebay shop and would swap it if i pay the return post if rquired..

what you rekon ???

Stick with it... I've found that with care I can actually get the chain into the tail end under the seat.

If I'm off somewhere I'm not sure about the parking or am going to be leaving the bike in a public place all day then I take the chain and use it.

Come on you Hatters
The best chain is the Immobiliser from Almax, you only have to see how easy they chop through all the other stuff to see why. He use's a full size bolt cropper, twice the size of the one used to test all the others for 'sold secure' ratings, and it makes mincemeat of the lot.

There not cheap, and bloody heavy, but with a ground anchor my bikes stay nice and snug in my garage.

However, and I know this sounds like the oposite of choices, but I carry a heavy cable lock and a disc lock for while I'm away. Mines a Kryptonite one, can't remember what its called, but its designed to go with their EV disclock. Its a good length and easliy locks two bikes together or one to a lamppost etc, yet tons lighter than a chain, and I believe there bloody hard to cut, as all the individual wires just move about rather than get cut but a bolt cropper. The main aim really is to make the scum move on to an unproteced machine, cos if he really wants yours he'll have it somehow, no matter how well protected.

I also carry a really lightweight one, whch is great for locking helmet and even jackets to your bike for a dayout.

Hmmm I hear what everyone is saying but as bmwdumptruck says they can bolt crop a light one just as easy as a heavy one.. but these are the scrotes that WILL take your bike regardless, I am thinking more on the lines of a lighter one as I tour two up with full hard luggage and this chain weighs as heavy as one of my panniers lol.. and will probably put the opertunist off just as much as a heavy one would... the wire ropes crop just as easy Im afraid, had a 20mm thick one wrapped round my ladders and crawler and they cropped it like butter...

wouldnt think twice about it if we wernt already close to weight limit as it is :dunno:

With your most critical program running (lots of un-saved data etc) open the lid of your computer and start banging the main CPU with a hammer.

This is just what that bloody big padlock will be doing if you DON'T have some decent padding on top of the bikes black box.

Just a thought!

Thankyou for your concerns .... luckily I use a some rubber matting over the ecu and the chain is so tightly fitted into the available space that nothing can move ..... I'm more concerned about the honda wiring that drops to pieces!!

Why not consider a Krypronite cable. A lot lighter than a chain. The fibres of the cable resist bolt cutters and are covered in a protective plastic sleeve.
I use one that is 2 metres in length, sufficient to fasten two bikes to a lamp post. It curls up nicely in the bottom of the tank bag.
