Chatting to a colleague last night he is a scuba diving instructor and he was telling me about an initial session that costs ?10 per person, I am considering having a go at it after Christmas, He told me that if I can get a group of 20 people then we could have a 2 hour lesson, basically they would close the pool to other swimmers so we would have it to ourselves, I believe the session would be at Wath swimming baths, early days yet but anyone interested?

OK, I'd be interested. How good a swimmer do you have to be?

Going down I'm pretty neat but any other direction it's not so easy.

Seriously though, I really would like giving that a try so put me down please.

When I had a go in the Dominican, I couldn't get used to having a mask over my face, & I had issues re breathing underwater. this session is to help people alleviate any fears/phobias etc. I don't think it matters how strong a swimmer you are as the faster you try to swim the more oxygen you use so the idea is to just gently swim.
I asked my colleague how much it costs for the full course, I was pleasantly surprised, ?299 for the whole course. and you can get kitted out for under ?1000 when you consider that the equipment lasts between 12 & 20 years this works out very inexpensive, the cost mounts up when you go to Egypt and Australia three times a year. :}
I'm looking to book this in January or February, without 20 names I'm afraid it will not happen.

Depends on the people taking the course, some places check that you can swim a certain distance, usually a width. But it really doesn't matter as you have a BCD on (The waistcoat thing that you fill with air) and that keeps you afloat on the surface.

Diving and what you're going to do is something you either love or hate and you won't know til you try it.

What you will probably do on the day is learn how everything works (basically), then get used to breathing underwater, then have a swim about. They may get you to try a few skills. Things that you will do on the full course, for example, taking the mouthpiece out underwater and putting it back in and then clearing it of water. The hardest one (for most) and the one that usually tells you and the instructor whether you'll be ok on a course is removing your mask underwater and then putting it back on and clearing it of water. They may not ask you to do that though, so don't panic!

If anyone does go on to do the course (and if it's a PADI course) let me know, I've got a load of training material, may be able to copy it and save you some money.

Have fun folks, it really is a brilliant feeling, floating weightless underwater. I envy you that first experience.

Hope that helps?

Had to swim 100m before I started the PADI courses, but I doubt if you'll need to do this if it's just a try it out session. Some places don't even check whether you can swim at all. It's one of the most relaxing activities you can do - have fun and enjoy it.

Agree with Lebowski - if you can take the mask off under water, put it back on and clear it then you'll never have any problems - but you probably won't be doing this the first time. The first few breaths under water is also a weird experience.
