What experiences has the B.I.R.D. community got with sat navs. Which is best/easyist and most adaptable. I also want it for use in the car! (I don't want much I know). The Garmin series look good but expensive. Are they worth it or is one of the other makes as good/better? I am riding around Ireland at Easter with some others so it is not essential but a nice to have.

Look forward to your thoughts and banter!

Paul
Appologies,

Just seen the 'Sat Nav' thread lower down the page!

The Garmin 550 has been around for long enough to be available second hand around ?250 on ebay, with new ones at about ?320.

I have had the 2610 for a couple of years and although it was a lot cheaper than the incoming 550, it still does it's job well on car and bike. They're ?150ish on ebay.

I got muself a GARMIN NUVI 660 for my trip to Spain in May.

It's not bike specific,so I'll keep it in the top of my tankbag or stick it in a freezer bag to keep it dry,but it's got the headphone socket for the bike and the speaker for the car. It's also got bluetooth and an sd memory card slot for your MP3.

I've not used it on any long distances yet however it's been fine when I have used it.:-0)

Yep already watching that, along with others, you would be amazed at the price they end up going for, sometimes for more than a new one

I think from memory the 500 does not include things like the in car mount, which by the time you've added one of those the 550 would be a better bet.

thanks

Not sure what the difference is between a 500 and 550.

As far as I can see, the main difference for bike use is that the 500 only comes pre-loaded with one region of maps, and the rest have to be loaded onto a SD card (not included) from the included DVD. Hardly a major exercise... Although reduces the space available for MP3s etc, but SD cards are cheap enough nowadays that it hardly matters.

Cheers will have a look, like you say SD cards are cheap enough and it's not a major exercise, lack of car mount is a pain tho !

Thanks all. Some valid points to think about. Nobody has sung the praises of anything other than Garmin so that tells a story in itself. Appreciate the help.

Navman

I have got a Navman N20 and it is a superb bit of kit. I have reccomended the Navman to a lot of people and most have brought one. My daughter has just got the Navman S30 which superceded the N series and it is every bit as good as my N20. Hope this helps.

Garmin for me, a Zumo 550 if you can run to it, failing that a 500!!:bow:I'm not sure if it does come with a car mount, I'd be surprised if it didn't, as far as I'm aware, the difference is that whilst the 550 tells you the actual name of the next road you want to be on, the 500 doesn't!!:dunno: big deal!! I stand to be corrected,:-0)

I've got a TOMTOM Rider mate. Cracking piece of kit, although admittedly not yet tested over distance.

Also got a mounting kit for the car.

I'm chuffed with it.

Cheers

I have the Zumo 550, which I use on the bike and in the car. So far, it's been brill (the only thing I don't like is Garmin charging for any map updates).

Used it to travel down through France (avoiding motorways) - the route it took me was excellent.
