Rip off ferry charges

bmwdumptruck

Come on you Hatters
Just been and booked a load of Tunnel tickets for a trip I'm leading for 13 guys to Normandy in April, no real problems other than the Credit card maxed out after about 10, so had to swap to a diferent card. Something to do with security I suppose.

But then had a look at prices for a trip we're looking to do to Reims in the late autumn, Tunnel wants ?44 even this far in advance, only paid ?50 for the normandy tickets!

So i had a quick look at Sea France who last year we're doing bike tickets for ?9, but they are now at ?22 and ?29 each way. PandO are about the same until you look further down the page and find ?9 each way fuel surcharge being added. FFS ?18 surcharge:wank:.

Seems the ferry companies don't want bike business this year, I mean why would anybody pay more for a slow ferry over a faster, easier, cleaner, closer and now Cheaper Train??

Harwich to Hook of Holland in May cost £112 return for me and
the bike including a single berth cabin each way on Stena Line.

bmwdumptruck..

I understand how you feel but if you want rip off prices then you need to book the Steampacket for the TT. By the end of next week, given I paid ?20 deposit at last years TT another ?180.
To be honest as I went there last year I am thinking about losing the ?20 and instead getting over to France. Its cheaper and even though there are no better racers to watch than those who race on the roads surely having a bike is about riding it and discovering new places.

Oh yes and I read this week that I will now need to get Special holday insurance as the normal one does not cover you riding a bike over 125cc.

I use these people for travel insurance

Tel: 0845 605 2700

I had a claim with them for a normal summer holiday and they were OK athough they didnt pay out for a couple of silly things.
The price is pretty good and they will insure you for your own bike and dont like hire bikes in the resort.

Thanks Wolfie, just needed someone to put a jinx on it :-0), although the thought had crossed my mind.

Hondated. have to agree, for a start you could do worse than pop down to Normandy, loads to see and plenty of places to visit. Or another great first timer option would be Reims, dead easy to get to, make your way right into the centre of town, huge underground carpark in the main high street, proper bike bays with railings to lock too and full CCtv. High street has hotels of all prices, just turn up there's always rooms to spare, and loads of restaurants to choose from. Cathedrals worth a visit and the old F1 circuit is just out of town. And not far to all sorts of good french roads.
The 125 thing on insurance actually seems to be getting less common, I've used the company Roy has mentioned as well, but now covered as a family as part of an Egg credit card policy that does cover us on bikes.

Maybe we should start a campaign to get a tunnel built to the IOM:yo:

France is great to ride in, I usually get 2 or 3 trips in a year (have my own digs over there) as for the IoM unfortunately that is off my list for TT weeks, too expensive. Go to Ireland for road racing and the ferries to get there aren't usually excessively expensive.

Try these guys "ferrysavers.com", ?23.60 by P&O return from Dover to Calais in the week leading up to Good Friday this year. Cheap price and value for money in my opinion.

I decided to lose my deposit on my IOM ferry ticket. I hope they sink (when empty).

I've been trying to book two guys with two bikes in May from Portsmouth to Santander with Brittany ferries...Cost one way ?703..Expensive!! BUT
if you travel fron Santander to Plymouth one way two guys and two bikes a day either side of our dates its only ?339. Are we getting ripped off here in Britian or what? I tried to complain and the woman cut me off, BITCH!!!!

Just found out the EGG card insurance policy we've had for the last few years is now under a different company and now it doesn't cover Bikes, and my misses is excluded for pre-existing conditions as well.

So if anybody else has the EGG travel policy you need to check it out.
