I have kept out of this up to now as I have seen & met all kinds of bikers, I have had days when I've ridden like a complete idiot & days when everything has been perfect, Steve from what you have posted it comes across as you are scared of your bike so you try to deter people from getting too close in case you have to move out of the way of a bump or pot hole in the road, if this is the case mate then seriously my advice is the Blackbird is not for you, sell it & get something more akin to your style of riding, this isn't a dig at you or a piss take but serious concern for your safety & the safety of other road users, your choice mate.

if i find someone in front or behind me doing something that i dont like , or get that feeling it aint right , i move back, even pull over, give them room, avoid like the plague.

always allow room for yourself and others says the highway code.

it is UP TO YOU to make sure you feel safe in the space you have around you.

if you dont feel safe, make yourself some room without endangering yourself or other road users.

if you drive like a coont and bait others, or try to "teach others the error of there ways" by your style of riding you really REALLY deserve all the consequences of your actions

there.. a sensible post :-0)

Steve....

like DK I've read but made no comment until now.

I've done quite a few rideouts with many groups .. some sedate some manic.

One thing that always remains true is that if you don't feel comfortable with the speed/style/manner of those your riding with then you have the choice to back off or hang back and leave 'em get on with it.

Likewise if you feel someone's too close the sensible option (on a rideout or not, car, bike or whatever) then again the sensible option is to wave/allow them past you.

Trying to "influence" how they are riding/driving or "persuade" them to do something like back off etc is downright dangerous - both to you and them and other road users.

Clearly you do have some riding confidence/control issues and that can certainly impact on your riding style and ability.

When on the bike or car I do odd distance checks by counting off the seconds against a vehicle I'm following or one behind me.

I have never found a 'bird rideout where I've been overly concerned about distances between bikes.

The tendency with bikes is to "stagger" (not just when riding!!:-0)) the intervals so that you're not directly following the machine in front .. this gives an additional margin.

I'd strongly suggest from what I've seen and what you've posted here that you need to quickly get yourself to a riding school for some help and then perhaps along to advance riders scheme.

I agree with DK that if you stay on the 'bird with your present skill level and attitude you'll come a cropper.

Sorry .. but I' don't want to see anyone hurt :dunno:

It really sounds like you are making judgements based on your abilities and knowledge without perhaps appreciating that as a standard that may not represent "best practice".

Most of all ... don't take the hump and leave the site .. while some are direct (OK blunt :-0)) and others are diplomatic one thing has been common .. concerns expressed for you safety and suggestions to guide towards some possible solutions..

:yo:

not with the bunch of coonts this way it aint, I led a ride once and i kid you not i went into a right hander hard and smooth, and in my mirrors i watch the next 3 bikes all carry straight on, all the same distance apart and all went through the same hole in the hedge that the first one had made, who then had the feckin nerve to blame me for falling off, most of the feckin group were in a straight line one behind the other and they were all looking at the tyre 10 ft in front of them so bang bang bang they all followed the first. this is the group that from stevenage to southend on sea 65miles, once took 3 feckinhrs to do, and we lost 2 of them within 200ft of seting off on a straight feckin road with no turn offs, they were so slow that buses had over taken them on the feckin high street.

fifty pence roundabouts, stop and steer corners, forgetting to put feet down at traffic lights when stopped, startin g bikes up in gear holding clutch in and let clutch out on southend front knocking over the next 4 bikes. taking cromer s bend at 90mph and wondering why he woke up in the field 100ft away from the first feckin bend,i have seen most of it with this one group about 12 people in all. i stopped riding with them 3 yrs ago when they decided that you were responsible to make sure the rider behind you was still there and had not got lost or something, sorry but i like to concentrate on what and where i am doing not somebody else.

Not going riding with the keystone kops sounds like a sound idea to me wolfie

the picture you just described has me in fits ......:-0)

I can just see the "carry on crew" doing it now .... Sid James as wolfie

Once tried Bracknell to Brighton with a group of mates ... target time was to do it in under an hour - no motorways - missed the target by 10 mins.

trust me we came to blows, the person from here was a coont, tearing up on the inside of people to a bend then realising we were turning left or a corner was there, he very nearly t-boned each and everyone else from who was on that ride out.

Confidence ameliorates nervousness. :-0)

Book yourself a half track day at Donington - tell them your a "starter" d34l

Register into the novices section - no heroes - nothing to be frightened of

You won't learn better roadcraft but you'll understand better how your bikes works [and at what speeds] and you'll also get used to other riders in close vacinity

Confidence boosting it is - also a great day out

Hope that helps

Don't forget ya footpump

Hmmmmmm.

"Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule"

Sound advice.

As others have said, if someone is 'tailgating you' pull over. Shit aint worth dying for.

As for group riding, comes with practice. Staggerd riding is best practice. Common sense really. Other considerations are size of the group. If it's a large one, split it into smaller more manageable groups. If you want a normal ride, ride at the front. If you want a progressive ride go at the back. Tail gunner will allways have to work a bit harder. Simple.

I will allways champion training of any sort. I dont care how good you think you are, you will allways learn something. And that something may save your life.

I will however defend you for riding at the speed limit. Any one on having a go at someone for riding at the legal limit wants there head read.

It is individual choice if you want to break the limit, we have all done it.

So, Steve enjoy your riding, but listen to what folks say and keep an open mind on whether you can improve.

But sometimes the concept of staggered needs to be explained, I think.

That depends. Are you a 'biker' or a 'motorcyclist' ?? Are you a 'riding God' or 'totally shit' on a bike ??? Do you read 'MCN' or 'Back Street Heroes' ?? 'Motorcycle Sport and Leisure' or '100% Biker' ???:-0)

Def a gentleman motorcyclist. In the context of what I think this post is about, I ride at my own speed, let the idiots go as they will be out of my life in 5 seconds so what's the point, nothing to prove to anyone........ and amazingly i have stayed upright (mostly:-0)) in 150,000 miles of riding. 65000 of which have been on my Bird.

For what it's worth, I think slagging someone off for going too slow is a bit 'macho man'. Each to his own.

Not sure about having 9 points for speeding though..........maybe the observation skills need a bit of a polish?h1d1ng2

Well.....you fit some of the criteria for consideration to membership of the 'Crap Riders Club'. Andy (Wolfie) and me are self confessed 'crap riders', we ride at our own speed (painfully slow), and we're proud of our crap ability.

The bit about 'gentleman motorcyclist' worries me. Have you ever seen Andy or me ?? Gentlemen is something we've never been called !!!:-0) :-0)
